Pages of History | September

Roza Shanina was a student and kindergarten teacher in Arkhangelsk who enlisted as a volunteer. She graduated with distinction from the sniper school and participated in battles from April 1944.

Due to her bravery and great results, she was awarded the Order of Glory 3rd Class after only two weeks of combat. She became the first servicewoman from the 3rd Belorussian Front to receive it. She participated in battles under Vitebsk and Vilna, and in early September 1944 she hunted down German snipers on the East Prussian border. On September 16, 1944, she was awarded the Order of Glory 2nd class.
