Despite a sports injury that made flying a challenge, he refused an instructor position and underwent surgery, missing the Battle of Britain. However, he more than made up for it, completing 700 combat sorties and shooting down 34 German aircraft, making him the most successful ace on the Western Front against the Luftwaffe.
