Cavern of Dreams
10/04/2025 - 10:503D platform games have evolved enormously since the golden era of the 90s, but their charm still holds true. Cavern of Dreams, developed by Bynine Studio, is a love letter to titles such as Banjo-Kazooie or Chameleon Twist, with a low-poly visual style, classic mechanics and a world full of secrets. But... does it manage to capture the magic of those classics or does it end up getting trapped in nostalgia?
Gameplay: Exploration and collectibles in the purest retro style
In Cavern of Dreams we take control of a friendly dragon named Fynn, whose mission is to rescue his missing siblings in a vast cavern full of unique biomes. Exploration is the central pillar of the game, with interconnected levels that hide collectibles and upgrades which expand our abilities.
The movement is agile and satisfying, with mechanics such as precise jumps, slides and the ability to climb certain surfaces. As we progress, we unlock new abilities that allow us access to previously unreachable areas, which encourages replayability and motivates our curiosity to discover every corner of the map.
The level design is based on unhurried exploration, without fighting, which reinforces a relaxed and adventure-focused experience. However, some challenges may feel a bit too easy, especially compared to the classics of the genre.
Visuals and sound with solid character
The artistic section of Cavern of Dreams is a pure homage to 3D games of the late 90s. Low-resolution models, pixelated textures and animations with a rough but charming touch manage to recreate the aesthetics of the Nintendo 64 era. The environment is varied, with locations ranging from lush forests to mysterious caverns, each of them with a well-defined visual identity.
The music and sound effects reinforce the nostalgic feeling, with relaxing melodies and effects reminiscent of the first polygonal games. However, the soundtrack may become repetitive after long gaming sessions.
Duration and replayability
Cavern of Dreams is not a particularly long game, but its emphasis on exploration and collectibles lengthens the duration of the game for those looking to complete it at 100%. There are no fights, nor particularly difficult challenges, what makes this game more accessible for new players, but at the same time, veterans of the genre might find it too easy.
Conclusion: A lovely tribute with some ups and downs
For lovers of classic 3D platformers, Cavern of Dreams is a little gem that captures the essence of the 90s era aptly. Its relaxed exploration, retro aesthetic and the charismatic protagonist make it an enchanting experience. However, its simplicity and lack of challenges may discourage players who are looking for something deeper. Still, if nostalgia for Nintendo 64 games runs through your veins, this title deserves a place in your collection.
