MARSUPILAMI – HOOBADVENTURE

For some time we have been seeing the revival of many mythical characters from our childhood, some of them from comics or television series, who are making the leap to the world of video games after a season of disappearance.

It is worth noting the role of Microïds, a French publisher, is adapting various Franco-Belgian comic classics such as The Smurfs, Asterix and Obelix or, the one that concerns us today, Marsupilami.

At the beginning of Marsupilami: Hoobadventure, some young marsupilamis find a sarcophagus on the beach and, when they open it, it releases a ghost that curses the different animals of Palombia. To advance in the game we will put ourselves in the shoes of these 3 marsupilamis and we will have to chase the ghost to defeat it and seal it with the help of 3 magic crystals, thus freeing the rest of the animals from the curse. Nothing particularly new or complex, but enough to motivate us.

As for the gameplay, we are facing a 2.5D platform that can be said to be quite influenced by Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, as well as Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends.

The game is quite simple, especially when compared to Donkey Kong Country. Not only are the levels easier in general, but the game is much more generous in terms of lives and more forgiving with timing. Of course, in the final stretch things get complicated and it will not be unusual to lose a few lives.

And speaking of the levels, we have a bit of everything you would expect from a game of this genre: jumps with falls into the void, hooks to grab onto, enemies to defeat, and dangers to dodge.

Regarding the boss levels, in reality, they have little combat against the boss on duty, since they are more similar to the Rayman races in which we will have to overcome a series of obstacles while chasing the enemy to beat.

Moving on to the technical aspects, we must admit that the game looks very good: the settings are colorful and well designed, and rendered, and the characters have quite fluid animations. As for sound, we have a very pleasant soundtrack that will accompany us the whole time, setting the action perfectly, as well as some great effects.

Marsupilami: Hoobadventure is, without a doubt, a very entertaining game and a very solid platform. It doesn't add anything new, to tell the truth, it has many features from the latest Donkey Kong and Rayman titles. What is a pity is that the game ends very quickly and it is quite simple to finish. Despite aiming towards a young audience, with more ambition, it could have come out as a true essential for everyone to enjoy. However, it must be said that the Ocellus Studios team has done a very good job with the title.
