Thresh arrives in 2XKO with an unprecedented mechanic that could completely change team play

Riot Games continues expanding the 2XKO roster and, following the recent reveal of Senna, has now shown in detail the full move set of one of the community’s most anticipated characters: Thresh. The Unrelenting Jailor will officially join the roster on June 9, bringing with him a completely new mechanic called Lantern Tag, designed specifically to take advantage of the game’s signature tag-team combat system.
The presentation video confirms that Riot has transferred many of Thresh’s iconic abilities from League of Legends, but adapted them into a far more technical fighting style focused on space control.
A strategist capable of controlling the entire screen
Within the official 2XKO classification, Thresh belongs to the Strategist archetype, a category reserved for characters specialized in manipulating the pace of combat and forcing opponents to play on their terms.
His chain remains the core of his kit. Moves like Death Sentence allow him to hook enemies from long distances and open the door to extended combo opportunities. Meanwhile, abilities such as Dark PassageandSpirit Summon generate constant pressure through summons and highly unpredictable movement options.
All signs point to him being one of the highest-skill-ceiling characters in the game.
Lantern Tag is the true revolution
The biggest new feature shown in the video is Lantern Tag, an exclusive mechanic that does not exist on any other character in the roster.
When Thresh places his lantern on the stage, character switches can be performed directly to that location. This allows both Thresh and his partner to instantly appear at the lantern’s position, even slightly altering their entry direction.
The mechanic works both on the ground and in the air, opening entirely new tactical possibilities for coordinated teams.
In practice, Lantern Tag turns the lantern into a strategic anchor point—used to start attacks, extend combos, or escape dangerous situations.
The lantern remains central to his identity
Riot has made sure the lantern remains just as important in 2XKO as it has been in League of Legends.
Beyond Lantern Tag, Thresh can use it to teleport, summon trapped souls, and execute several special moves. Even his ultimate, Damnation, preserves the fantasy of imprisoning enemies inside the lantern, directly referencing the original character.
Fans of League will also recognize abilities inspired by Death Sentence, Flay, and The Box, reworked for 2XKO’s fighting system.
Thresh and Senna arrive together in the game
Thresh’s release is not coming alone.
Riot has confirmed that both Thresh and Senna will be available on the same day, reinforcing one of the most iconic rivalries in Runeterra’s universe. Their relationship is a central part of League of Legends lore, and their simultaneous release appears to be a deliberate choice by the studio.
One of the most technical characters in the roster
After seeing his full move set, it is clear that Thresh is not designed for beginners.
His ability to control spacing, reposition allies, and create unpredictable situations through Lantern Tag points to a character with enormous strategic depth.
And if Riot manages to balance this new mechanic properly, the Unrelenting Jailor could quickly become one of the most important pieces of 2XKO’s competitive meta.
Because in a game where teamwork is everything, no one seems better suited to control the battlefield than Thresh.
