History returns as the primary battlefield of Age of Empires IV with the launch of Yue Fei’s Legacy, a new expansion that takes players directly into one of the most significant conflicts of medieval China. Moving beyond simply adding isolated units or maps, this content delivers a full narrative campaign and introduces an unprecedented civilization that notably shifts the game's strategic focus.
The new content centers on the figure of Yue Fei, one of the most legendary generals of the Song Dynasty, historically renowned for his resistance against the Jin Dynasty invasions. The expansion places players in a high-stakes survival scenario following the fall of Northern China and the capture of the Song imperial court, forcing them to reorganize remaining forces while protecting the dynasty's heir.
The campaign includes a total of eight missions focused on the Song-Jin war, featuring a strong cinematic and narrative component. The approach seeks to offer more than just simple historical battles, emphasizing military desperation, the rebuilding of alliances, and resistance against an enemy that initially seems impossible to stop.
However, one of the most significant updates arrives with the inclusion of the Jin Dynasty as a new playable civilization. This new army introduces mechanics that differ greatly from the existing factions in Age of Empires IV, opting for an extremely aggressive combination of heavy cavalry, gunpowder weaponry, and advanced siege machinery.
Among its most striking features are the Mounted Villagers—mounted units capable of significantly accelerating the empire's economic development and mobility—as well as the Grasslands buildings, designed to increase military production more efficiently. The civilization also incorporates tools to influence neutral settlements, expanding tactical possibilities during matches.
In combat, the Jin Dynasty appears geared toward exerting constant pressure thanks to units like the powerful Iron Pagoda, a heavy cavalry unit designed to shatter enemy lines, or the Mounted Grenadiers, capable of dealing massive explosive damage in large-scale engagements. These are complemented by Eruptor hand cannons, short-range weapons that further reinforce the faction's offensive identity.
The content also significantly expands the visual and atmospheric scope of Relic Entertainment's RTS. The expansion introduces new musical compositions inspired by Jin culture, specific mastery systems for the civilization, and a set of new maps and biomes that help reinforce the historical setting of this phase of the Chinese conflict.
With Yue Fei’s Legacy, Age of Empires IV continues to deepen its commitment to more elaborate historical campaigns and civilizations with clearly differentiated gameplay identities. Given the level of detail in this expansion, everything points to Relic wanting to further consolidate the game as one of the most complete historical RTS titles in today's market.
