Kensei and Shuhei Take Center Stage in Brave Souls’ New White Poppy Summons

Squad Nine is stepping back into the spotlight with two new Thousand-Year Blood War characters. Thousand-Year Blood War Glory Summons White Poppy is now live in Bleach Brave Souls, introducing new ★5 versions of Kensei Muguruma and Shuhei Hisagi with sharply different specialties. Kensei is built as a ranged strong-attack character capable of escalating his damage through a special attack sequence, while Shuhei has been designed primarily as a formidable Brave Battles unit packed with offensive and defensive counters. The Summons runs from September 30 at 16:00 until October 19 at 15:59 JST.

The banner also continues the more generous structure used by recent Glory Summons. Four ★5 characters receive featured status at a 0.75% individual rate, every x10 Summons guarantees at least one ★5 character, selected milestone Steps guarantee featured units, and Steps 10, 20, 30 and 40 specifically guarantee one of the two new characters. Every draw additionally produces a White Poppy Summons Medal that can be spent through a dedicated Exchange, giving players another progression route alongside the normal gacha results.

Kensei turns aggression into an escalating power cycle

Kensei is arguably the more unusual of the two newcomers from a mechanical perspective. His new Thousand-Year Blood War version is a ranged strong-attack character with Hollow Killer+, and every attack is capable of inflicting Lacerate+. That status effect deals continuous damage while preventing affected enemies from using their own strong attacks, but it is also central to Kensei's personal damage engine rather than functioning merely as crowd control.

His skill set includes Greater Status Ailment Chance Against Hollows +20%, making Lacerate+ considerably easier to apply against the enemies he is intended to counter. Inflicting a status ailment then activates Status Ailment Spiritual Pressure Boost +90%, while his Soul Trait provides Damage to Lacerated Enemies +45%. The individual systems reinforce each other, encouraging Kensei to repeatedly inflict Lacerate before exploiting the resulting damage window rather than simply cycling strong attacks as soon as they become available.

The more distinctive mechanic is his Triggered Boost. Kensei must activate strong attacks one, two and three in sequence to empower his Special Move. Once the boosted Special Move is used, all three strong attacks immediately have their cooldowns reset and become superior strong attacks for an entire minute. That gives him a clear buildup-and-payoff structure, rewarding players who deliberately manage the order of their abilities instead of treating the three strong attacks as interchangeable buttons.

Defeating enemies makes Kensei progressively more dangerous

Kensei also grows stronger as a quest continues. His Enemies Defeated Bonuses increase strong-attack damage after 10, 20 and 30 kills, culminating in an additional 30% bonus at the final threshold. KLab states that once 30 enemies have been defeated, the combined effects of his skills can bring his strong-attack damage boost to 120%. That naturally favors modes where Kensei has enough enemies and enough time to fully activate his kit rather than very short encounters that finish before the bonuses can accumulate.

His utility extends beyond using him directly. Kensei carries EX Strong Attack Recharge Time -12% and EX Berserker +25%, both of which can be shared when he occupies the first link slot. Combined with his Damage to Lacerated Enemies +45% Soul Trait, he becomes an attractive link for other strong-attack characters capable of reliably applying Lacerate. Freeze Resistance 200% and Poise Break outside Brave Battles further reinforce his role in demanding PvE content, with KLab specifically highlighting Guild Quests featuring Hollow Killer and ranged-damage rules as a natural destination for him.

That makes this version of Kensei considerably more sophisticated than a character whose appeal comes purely from high numbers. His optimal performance depends on status application, kill progression and executing the correct strong-attack sequence before triggering his Special Move. Once those systems are active simultaneously, however, White Poppy's captain is designed to become progressively more destructive.

Shuhei has been built for Brave Battles

Shuhei takes almost the opposite approach. Rather than focusing on quest progression and strong attacks, his new version is a melee normal-attack character explicitly geared toward Brave Battles. He carries both Stern Ritter Killer and Soul Reaper Killer, two especially relevant affiliations in PvP, alongside Flurry +4 to dramatically increase the hit count of his normal attacks.

The real strength of the design lies in the number of defensive systems he can bypass while simultaneously possessing strong defensive options of his own. Shuhei has Brave Battle Temporary Invincibility and Persistence, but also receives Persistence Breaker, Ignore Brave Battle Invincibility, Prevent Last-Ditch Survival and Pierce Barrier. In practical terms, KLab has equipped him to survive several of the mechanics commonly used to prolong a PvP character's life while also giving him tools specifically intended to neutralize those same protections on the opposing team.

His Opening Stat Boost Defender further strengthens that role by raising Attack and Focus while providing a major Defense increase for a limited period at the beginning of a battle. Since Brave Battles can be decided extremely quickly, front-loading those bonuses is particularly valuable. Instead of requiring time to establish himself like Kensei, Shuhei is designed to enter combat already operating at elevated power.

Hisagi is useful even when he is not fighting

Shuhei also carries an unusually strong package for character linking. His two Soul Traits provide Damage Taken -16% and Normal Attack Damage +20%, while his EX Skill adds EX Bruiser +30% when shared through the first link slot. That combination makes him potentially useful beyond players specifically trying to build him as one of their frontline Brave Battles characters.

KLab describes him as a valuable link option for normal-attack-focused characters, and the reasoning is straightforward. Damage reduction adds survivability while both the Soul Trait and EX Skill improve basic attack output. Even players who eventually replace Shuhei himself with another PvP character may therefore continue finding value in having him available as part of their broader roster.

The contrast between White Poppy's two newcomers is consequently very deliberate. Kensei is a strong-attack PvE specialist whose performance ramps as a quest progresses, while Shuhei enters with a kit constructed around surviving and dismantling Brave Battles defenses. They share the same banner and the same Ninth Division connection, but they are targeting very different areas of Brave Souls.

White Poppy makes the guarantees easier to understand

The Summons structure is also important because the two new characters receive dedicated guarantee milestones rather than relying entirely on their individual draw rates. There are four featured ★5 characters in total, each appearing at a 0.75% rate. Steps 5, 15, 25 and 35 guarantee one of those featured characters, while Steps 10, 20, 30 and 40 narrow the guarantee specifically to one of the two newly introduced ★5 characters.

Every x10 Summons also guarantees a ★5 character, although that broader guarantee can include characters outside the featured group. Players therefore need to distinguish between three layers of protection. A normal x10 guarantees ★5 rarity, the featured milestones guarantee one of the banner's four highlighted characters, and every tenth milestone guarantees Kensei or Shuhei specifically.

The standard listed cost is 25 Spirit Orbs for a single Summons and 250 for a x10 Summons. Players concerned primarily with one specific character still need to account for the fact that the new-character guarantee does not let them choose between Kensei and Shuhei; it guarantees one of the new pair rather than a predetermined unit. The exact character pool and rates for all non-featured ★5 characters remain available through the in-game notice.

Every pull also feeds the White Poppy Exchange

The accompanying medal system provides another layer of value to repeated pulls. Every individual draw awards one White Poppy Summons Medal, including x1 Summons, with those medals usable in the dedicated White Poppy Summons Medal Exchange. Players using individual pulls should note that no medal pop-up appears, although the medals themselves are still automatically delivered to the Gift Box.

The Exchange can be reached through Home, Shop and Exchanges, allowing the banner's progression to continue outside the immediate Summons results. This medal structure has become increasingly important in recent Brave Souls banners because it gives unsuccessful pulls some persistent value rather than making every non-target result a complete dead end.

White Poppy follows several other Thousand-Year Blood War releases introduced during Brave Souls' extended 11th Anniversary period. Recent banners have included the Virtuous Summons featuring new Rukia and Byakuya versions, Awe with Gremmy and Robert, and Calamity Tie-In releases centered on characters such as Ichigo and Aizen. The game has consequently maintained an unusually aggressive schedule of high-profile TYBW additions throughout the anniversary period.

The banner name brings Squad Nine together

There is also a neat thematic reason for pairing these two characters under the White Poppy name. Kensei is the captain of the Ninth Division and Shuhei serves as one of its lieutenants, making the banner a focused Squad Nine release rather than two unrelated Thousand-Year Blood War additions. The white poppy is traditionally associated with the division itself, giving the Summons title a direct connection to the pair rather than functioning as an arbitrary subtitle.

Their history makes the pairing especially appropriate during the Thousand-Year Blood War period. Kensei had previously saved a young Shuhei, leaving such a strong impression that the future lieutenant adopted the distinctive 69 marking associated with him. By the time of the Quincy invasion, their relationship had evolved into that of captain and lieutenant, with Kensei also pushing Shuhei to develop his abilities further. The new versions therefore represent characters whose connection stretches far beyond simply sharing the same division.

Mechanically, however, KLab has resisted making them variations on the same concept. Kensei's progression-heavy PvE kit and Shuhei's purpose-built Brave Battles package give players two completely different reasons to pursue the banner. Someone focused on Hollow Guild Quests may value Kensei far more heavily, while a player trying to strengthen their Brave Battles lineup is likely to scrutinize Shuhei's Persistence Breaker, defensive opening boost and anti-invincibility package first.

Squad Nine has arrived with two very different weapons

White Poppy ultimately continues Brave Souls' current strategy of making new Thousand-Year Blood War characters increasingly specialized. Rather than producing two broadly powerful units and leaving players to decide where to use them, KLab is giving both newcomers explicit jobs.

Kensei wants long PvE encounters where he can inflict Lacerate+, accumulate defeated-enemy bonuses, trigger his Spiritual Pressure increase and eventually transform his strong attacks after setting up the boosted Special Move. Shuhei wants the immediate violence of Brave Battles, where his defensive effects keep him active and his collection of barrier, invincibility, Persistence and Last-Ditch counters prevents opponents from relying on many of the mode's usual survival mechanics.

Thousand-Year Blood War Glory Summons White Poppy is available until October 19 at 15:59 JST. With guaranteed featured characters every five milestone Steps, a guaranteed new unit every ten and medals accompanying every draw, players have several layers of protection against bad luck — although anyone hunting specifically for either Kensei or Shuhei will still have to contend with the fundamental uncertainty that comes with a two-character guarantee.

For Squad Nine fans, though, the attraction is straightforward. The captain gets a new escalating PvE powerhouse, his lieutenant enters Brave Battles carrying an unusually comprehensive collection of counters, and White Poppy gives both of them a dedicated Thousand-Year Blood War banner at the same time.
