Gearbox Software has released “Uncontainable,” a new Borderlands 4 character short dedicated to Loveless the Hacker and the dangerous digital entity sharing her mind. The cinematic recounts Loveless’s violent incursion into the digiverse, where she searches for valuable Vault data while struggling—or perhaps cooperating—with her viral alter ego, Wyrm.

Loveless will become a playable Vault Hunter on September 10 as part of Borderlands 4’s next major content release. Unlike a conventional hacker who remains safely behind a terminal, she combines advanced cybernetics, digital infiltration, elemental attacks and close-range assassination techniques. Her connection with Wyrm also gives her access to a physical companion that can be digistructed onto the battlefield.

The character arrives alongside Version 1.10, Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort and Bounty Pack 5: Amara and the Vile Shadows. Each component will be available separately, while Loveless is also included in the Vault Hunter Pack and Borderlands 4 Super Deluxe Edition.

Two Minds Sharing One Extremely Dangerous Body

Before becoming a Vault Hunter, Loveless was an Anshin hacker who eventually turned her technical expertise towards assassination. Her most defining creation is Wyrm, a sentient digital virus that does far more than infect ordinary computer systems. Wyrm shares Loveless’s consciousness, creating a symbiotic relationship in which biological instincts and malicious code operate together.

“Uncontainable” explores that connection by placing both personalities at the centre of its story. Loveless recounts a mission that takes her directly into the digiverse in search of Vault information, but the extraction quickly becomes another demonstration of the pair’s destructive potential.

The digital setting is particularly appropriate for a character whose abilities blur the boundary between programming and physical violence. Loveless does not simply manipulate machines from a distance. She can transform code into weapons, manifest Wyrm as a combat companion and use cybernetic enhancements to pursue enemies with the speed of an assassin.

Wyrm is consequently more than a cosmetic pet or separate artificial intelligence. It is an extension of Loveless’s shared will, capable of emerging from the digital world to attack enemies with physical strikes and toxic breath. The relationship gives Gearbox an opportunity to present internal conflict through two personalities that are simultaneously separate entities and parts of the same combatant.

A Vault Hunter Built Around Critical Hits and Status Effects

Loveless’s central character trait is RAM, a special resource bar that fills whenever she lands critical hits or applies status effects. Both mechanics are fundamental to her overall playstyle, encouraging players to maintain accuracy while repeatedly applying elemental damage.

A full RAM bar empowers Loveless’s next melee attack, allowing her to strike with her cybernetic Techno-Kagi claws for significantly increased damage. Activating this attack consumes the entire bar, turning it into a finisher that must be used at the appropriate moment.

There is also a reason to preserve the accumulated resource. Loveless’s gun damage increases according to how much RAM she currently holds, creating a choice between maintaining a passive firearms bonus and spending everything on an empowered melee strike. Remaining inactive for too long causes the bar to deplete, so players cannot simply charge it in one encounter and save it indefinitely.

This structure makes Loveless an aggressively paced Vault Hunter. Her abilities reward a constant sequence of critical shots, elemental effects, movement and decisive executions. Even builds focused primarily on guns will need to engage with the RAM system, while melee-oriented players can treat the full bar as the foundation of their strongest attacks.

Plague Star Turns Infection Into a Weapon

Loveless has three Action Skills connected to the Virology, Hack / Slash and Manifestation skill trees. Each one supports a different interpretation of her identity, from spreading digital infections to performing stealth assassinations or commanding Wyrm directly.

Plague Star represents the Virology tree. Loveless digistructs a large shuriken and throws it through enemies, inflicting corrosive damage and applying Contagion. The infection continues damaging affected targets over time and can spread when its current host dies, transferring a portion of its accumulated stacks to nearby enemies.

This gives Plague Star considerable potential against groups. Instead of treating every opponent as an isolated target, players can build Contagion on selected enemies and use their deaths to extend the infection across an encounter.

Holding the Action Skill activates its Executable, detonating all active Contagion effects and consuming them to cause corrosive area damage. Players therefore have to decide whether to allow the virus to continue spreading or sacrifice its remaining duration for an immediate burst.

The Virology tree also supports radiation damage and status-effect builds. Its available upgrades can alter the shuriken’s behaviour, make it ricochet between targets or create additional hazards. At the highest level of specialisation, players can construct Loveless around rapidly infecting entire groups rather than concentrating exclusively on conventional weapon damage.

Visual Paradox Nexus Mixes Sniping, Stealth and Melee Combat

The Hack / Slash tree is built around Visual Paradox Nexus, an Action Skill that improves Loveless’s movement speed and critical-hit damage for a limited duration. Killing an enemy while the ability is active briefly cloaks Loveless and creates a clone at the defeated target’s location.

This combination supports mobile precision builds. A sniper can eliminate an exposed opponent, disappear before nearby enemies retaliate and reposition while the clone distracts the remaining group. However, the skill tree is not limited to long-range combat.

Activating the skill’s Function makes Loveless attack with a kusarigama, producing a wave of radiation melee damage. If she performs the attack while cloaked, it becomes a guaranteed critical hit but immediately ends her stealth.

The resulting rhythm recalls the hybrid assassination style associated with Zer0 in Borderlands 2, although Loveless builds upon that foundation with her own resource system, digital clone and radiation mechanics. Players can prioritise sniper rifles and precision damage, develop a fast melee build or combine both approaches by using ranged kills to create openings for close-range executions.

Wyrm Becomes a Weapon Through Malignant Construct

Malignant Construct, the Action Skill attached to the Manifestation tree, allows Loveless to summon Wyrm into physical form. Once deployed, the digital creature fights beside her and generates Symbiosis stacks through kills and selected passive abilities.

These stacks gradually expire, requiring Loveless to remain involved in Wyrm’s attacks instead of treating the creature as an entirely autonomous pet. The Manifestation tree is designed around repeatedly issuing commands, maintaining Symbiosis and using the resulting bonuses to improve Loveless’s own performance.

The Function command teleports Wyrm towards a selected enemy and causes radiation damage around its destination. Its Executable unleashes a powerful breath attack that deals radiation melee damage to the target.

Gearbox describes the ability as more interactive than Borderlands 4’s traditional companion mechanics. Maximising Wyrm’s damage will require the player to direct its movement and attacks, producing a more deliberate partnership between Vault Hunter and summoned creature.

A Major September Update for Borderlands 4

Loveless will arrive on September 10 alongside Version 1.10, which increases the maximum level cap by ten levels for every Borderlands 4 player. The update will also introduce balance adjustments affecting the game’s existing Vault Hunters, making the release relevant even to players who do not purchase the new character.

The same day marks the launch of Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort. Its narrative takes players to Providence, a tropical island where a luxury retreat has become the centre of a Tediore military operation. Vault Hunters will join the returning FL4K to rescue Mr. Chew and fight through Tediore soldiers, exo-suits, mechs and five elite managers serving Lieutenant Harmony.

Bounty Pack 5: Amara and the Vile Shadows will provide a separate repeatable mission centred on Amara, unstable Phase rifts and a former laboratory belonging to Vile Lictor. Its story will examine Amara’s connection to the Phase dimension while introducing new enemies, bosses and loot.

Loveless will be available as an individual purchase for $9.99 in the United States, with regional prices varying between storefronts. The playable character is separate from the narrative missions and Providence region included in FL4K and the Last Resort, so players should check which edition or individual component they are purchasing.

With “Uncontainable,” Gearbox is establishing Loveless as more than an additional character class. Her shared consciousness with Wyrm shapes her backstory, visual identity and entire combat system, while her three skill trees offer distinct routes through elemental infection, stealth assassination and active companion control. She joins Borderlands 4 on September 10, when the game receives one of its largest collections of post-launch content so far.
