Gearbox Software has released an official gameplay overview for Loveless the Hacker, the next playable Vault Hunter joining Borderlands 4. Loveless arrives on September 10 as paid downloadable content, launching alongside Version 1.10, Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort, and Bounty Pack 5: Amara and the Vile Shadows.

The overview presents a highly aggressive character designed to expose weaknesses, spread elemental effects and convert successful attacks into additional damage. Loveless combines precision gunplay, close-range attacks, stealth technology and a digistructed viral companion, giving players several substantially different ways to build the new Vault Hunter.

Loveless can be purchased individually and is also included with the Borderlands 4 Super Deluxe Edition and Vault Hunter Pack. The base game is required, while the character and her cosmetics are treated separately from the missions, map and narrative content included in FL4K and the Last Resort.

Two minds working as one lethal system

Loveless is a former Anshin hacker who became an assassin after merging advanced cybernetics with Wyrm, a sentient digital virus of her own creation. The two share a single consciousness, with Wyrm capable of leaving the digital world and taking on a physical form during combat.

This relationship is more than a narrative detail. Wyrm operates as an active extension of Loveless’s arsenal, attacking enemies independently and responding to additional commands. Depending on the equipped Action Skill and chosen upgrades, players can turn Wyrm into a persistent combat companion, a source of Radiation damage or a delivery system for powerful finishing attacks.

Loveless’s overall design appears intended for players who want to maintain constant momentum. Critical hits, status effects, melee strikes, movement and Action Skill commands can all feed into one another, creating a combat loop that rewards active target selection instead of passive defensive play.

Her elemental identity primarily revolves around Corrosive and Radiation damage. Corrosive attacks provide a natural answer to armored opponents, while Radiation effects can create chain reactions within tightly packed groups. Several abilities also interact with Contagion, allowing harmful effects to propagate between enemies.

RAM turns precision into raw power

Loveless’s unique Vault Hunter Trait is RAM, a resource generated by scoring Critical Hits or applying Status Effects. The more RAM she has accumulated, the greater the bonus to her Gun Damage.

When the RAM meter is completely filled, Loveless’s next Melee Attack becomes Empowered. That attack deals increased damage but consumes the stored resource, creating an important decision during combat: maintain a high RAM level for sustained gun damage or spend it on a potentially devastating melee strike.

RAM gradually disappears if Loveless stops generating it. Players will therefore be encouraged to remain aggressive, continuously applying elemental effects and aiming for critical weak points. Builds that can reliably produce both should have an easier time keeping the resource active during prolonged encounters.

Several skills can improve the damage provided by RAM, refill part or all of the meter after it is spent or attach additional elemental effects to the Empowered Melee Attack. This creates space for hybrid builds that move between gunfire and close-quarters combat instead of committing exclusively to one damage source.

Malignant Construct unleashes Wyrm

Loveless has three Action Skills, each connected to one of her skill trees. The first, Malignant Construct, summons Wyrm into the physical world to fight alongside her.

Once Wyrm is active, tapping the Action Skill command orders the creature to teleport toward a targeted enemy, dealing Radiation damage in the surrounding area. Holding the command triggers an Executable: a considerably stronger breath attack that inflicts Radiation Melee Damage.

Summoning Wyrm also grants Loveless Symbiosis stacks. These stacks gradually deplete, but additional stacks can be generated through Wyrm kills and selected passive abilities. Many skills in the Manifestation tree become more powerful according to the number of active Symbiosis stacks.

The system allows Loveless and Wyrm to function as a coordinated pair. Symbiosis can improve critical damage, Radiation output, survivability, maximum health and the effectiveness of Wyrm’s attacks. Other upgrades can provide Loveless with an Overshield after Radiation kills or give her a chance to negate incoming damage completely.

More specialized options can transform Wyrm’s commands. One upgrade replaces the teleport order with a targeted missile, while another allows Wyrm to tether multiple enemies together so that its damage against one affected target is repeated across the others. Executable modifications can give Wyrm wings for a wider breath attack, generate a damaging singularity or send the creature into a berserk melee assault.

Visual Paradox Nexus weaponizes stealth and deception

Visual Paradox Nexus provides a more evasive approach. Activating it cloaks Loveless and creates a digital decoy in her place, disrupting enemy attention and giving the player an opportunity to relocate or prepare a more damaging attack.

Its associated Hack / Slash skill tree emphasizes Critical Hits, Melee Damage, movement, shields and the interaction between stealth and weapon attacks. Loveless can increase her speed while cloaked, improve her accuracy and reload speed after generating a clone, or store damage from her first shots after entering stealth for use in a later Function or Executable.

Movement is also converted into an offensive resource through Footwork stacks. These can increase Loveless’s movement speed and eventually guarantee a Critical Hit with her next melee attack. Other upgrades provide Melee Lifesteal, improve Shield Capacity and immediately begin shield regeneration when an Action Skill command is used.

This branch appears particularly suited to players who enjoy rapidly entering and leaving close range. Loveless can use deception to break enemy tracking, reposition around protected targets and then exploit the opening with gunfire or an Empowered Melee Attack.

One of its advanced options lets Loveless throw a kusarigama blade at a selected target while Visual Paradox Nexus is active. A successful hit deals Radiation Melee Damage, completely fills her RAM and pulls her toward the enemy. Melee kills can then restore the move’s cooldown, supporting an extremely mobile assassination-focused playstyle.

Plague Star spreads elemental chaos

The third Action Skill, Plague Star, allows Loveless to throw a technologically enhanced shuriken into groups of enemies. The weapon damages targets while helping to spread Contagion, turning clustered encounters into opportunities for cascading elemental effects.

Plague Star is connected to the Virology tree, which concentrates on Status Effect Chance, Corrosive Damage, Contagion and Action Skill cooldowns. Applying elemental effects can increase Loveless’s Gun Damage and Reload Speed while also accelerating the recovery of her abilities.

Enemies infected with Contagion can be modified to drop throwable Contaminants when defeated. These objects explode on contact and infect additional targets, allowing the effect to continue moving across a battlefield after its original host has been eliminated.

Alternative upgrades can convert the shuriken to Radiation damage, make it ricochet between enemies and leave Radiation hazards behind. Loveless can also gain opportunities to apply an additional random elemental effect when attacking an enemy that does not already have one.

The result is a build path focused less on eliminating a single target immediately and more on destabilizing entire groups. It should be particularly effective in encounters containing numerous weaker enemies, although its Corrosive specialization also gives it tools for dealing with armored units.

Functions and Executables add another tactical layer

All three Action Skills use two additional mechanics called Functions and Executables. Functions are lower-cooldown commands that provide frequent bursts of utility or damage, while Executables act as more powerful finishers.

This gives Loveless more direct control over her signature ability than a character whose Action Skill is simply activated and left running. A Wyrm build can issue positioning commands before triggering a breath attack, while stealth and shuriken setups can use their own Functions to maintain pressure between major attacks.

Augments and Capstones can replace the standard behavior of these commands, creating substantial differences between builds based on the same Action Skill. Players can access any of Loveless’s three base Action Skills without investing in the corresponding tree, but their Augments and Capstones remain tied to their original progression paths.

Taken together, Loveless’s mechanics position her as one of Borderlands 4’s more technical Vault Hunters. Her strongest builds will likely depend on managing several interconnected systems rather than relying on a single source of damage.

Loveless arrives with a much larger content drop

The character’s September 10 release forms part of Version 1.10, which will increase the maximum level cap by ten levels for every Borderlands 4 player. The higher cap will provide additional Skill Points and create more freedom to combine abilities from different sections of each Vault Hunter’s trees.

Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort will introduce Providence, a tropical island dominated by an active volcano. Players will join the returning FL4K to rescue Mr. Chew and confront a Tediore expedition attempting to seize the island’s valuable Ordonite deposits.

Providence includes new missions, collectibles, bosses, Tediore enemies and world events. Players can travel across the jungle using ziplines and enter Tediore’s digital servers to destroy enemies before they materialize. Its loot pool includes two new Pearlescent weapons and 18 Legendary items.

Bounty Pack 5: Amara and the Vile Shadows will explore disturbances connected to Elpis and the mysterious Phase dimension. The pack includes a repeatable mission featuring Amara, a new boss, two mini-bosses, additional Vile enemy types, one Pearlescent weapon and six pieces of Legendary equipment.

Loveless, FL4K and the Last Resort, and Amara and the Vile Shadows all launch on September 10 for Borderlands 4. With three distinct Action Skills, a dedicated combat resource and extensive interactions between critical attacks, melee damage and elemental effects, Loveless looks capable of supporting everything from companion-led Radiation builds to fast-moving stealth assassins and highly contagious elemental specialists.
