Borderlands 4 sets up one of its toughest challenges yet with two new evolving boss fights

The endgame of Borderlands 4 is about to get considerably more brutal. Gearbox has officially revealed the brand-new Raid Boss 2 encounter, a high-level activity arriving for free with Update 1.7 on May 28. It promises significantly more demanding encounters, fresh mechanics, and exclusive loot for those who manage to survive.
The main attraction comes in the form of Subjugator and Thol the Invincible, two bosses that operate very differently from traditional enemies. According to Gearbox, eliminating one of them mid-fight will cause the surviving boss to drastically increase in power before temporarily retreating to their personal domain, only to return later in an ascended form.
And that is where the real fight begins.
This system introduces a dynamic quite different from many classic raid bosses. Instead of just focusing on damage output and health pools, the encounter forces players to make tactical decisions regarding elimination priorities while the remaining enemy evolves and completely overwrites its skill set.
Each ascended form boasts exclusive mechanics, meaning the second phase of the raid will depend entirely on which of the two bosses is left alive.
This approach fits perfectly with one of the Borderlands franchise's historical strengths: turning high-level encounters into tests of constant adaptation rather than simple stat checks.
As expected, the content arrives alongside a new wave of endgame loot—historically one of the aspects that generates the most excitement within the community.
Update 1.7 will add:
- 1 New Pearlescent weapon: A rarity tier traditionally associated with some of the rarest and most sought-after items in the franchise.
- 4 new Legendary items
- 5 new Class Mods, one per Vault Hunter
- 1 new Firmware, expanding customization or progression options even further.
The addition of exclusive mods for each character is particularly noteworthy, as it could shake up the meta and open the door for powerful new builds tailored for endgame content.
All of this reinforces a very clear strategy from Gearbox: keeping the endgame alive through periodic challenges paired with rewards potent enough to justify new farming sessions.
The community has already begun speculating on the encounter's actual difficulty level. Historically, Invincible Raid Bosses have been the hardest content the franchise has to offer, especially for solo players looking to optimize their setups without a squad.
The detail that the surviving boss reaches "full power" by absorbing their fallen partner has sparked immense interest. It suggests prolonged battles where preparation, team coordination, and resource management will matter far more than raw, explosive burst damage.
With Subjugator and Thol the Invincible, Borderlands 4 looks ready to raise the bar for its endgame loop once again. And if the trailer is any real preview of the challenge ahead, many Vault Hunters are about to find out that putting down one boss doesn't bring you closer to victory... it does the exact opposite.
