Fortune’s Keep returns revamped as Zombies goes roguelike in one of Call of Duty’s most ambitious seasons

The new Season 04 for Call of Duty: Warzone and Black Ops7 is finally here, and Activision has pulled out all the stops. Featuring brand-new multiplayer maps, a completely revamped version of Fortune’s Keep, unreleased weapons, competitive modes, and a surprising evolution for Zombies, this update shapes up to be one of the franchise's most significant drops of the year.
The trailer’s message is loud and clear: “It’s time to take control.” Looking at everything this season brings to the table, players will have more ways to do exactly that than ever before.
Fortune’s Keep returns with major gameplay shifts
The headline feature for Warzone is the return of Fortune’s Keep, one of the most popular Resurgence maps in recent years.
However, this isn't just a simple nostalgia trip. Activision has rebuilt several zones across the island, added new micro-Points of Interest, and fully optimized the environment for Black Ops 7’s advanced movement mechanics. The result is a more dynamic and vertical experience that offers fresh flanking routes, engagements, and tactical opportunities—even for veterans who know the island by heart.
The update also introduces the new Shadowlink contract, exclusive to Fortune’s Keep. This mechanic grants access to a mobile black market from anywhere on the map, offering special gear and tactical tools that can be upgraded as you complete additional objectives.
Furthermore, Resurgence Ranked Play makes its return, satisfying one of the community's most highly requested competitive modes.
Zombies receives one of its most innovative changes yet
While Warzone relies on revamped nostalgia, Zombies is taking a bold leap into experimentation.
The standout addition is Rogue Run, a new permanent mode that infuses roguelike elements into the classic round-based experience. Players must survive waves of the undead, select randomized rewards after each encounter, and piece together a unique build as they progress through different areas connected via teleporters.
Every match presents different combinations of weapons, Perks, Field Upgrades, and modifiers, immensely increasing replayability.
The season also incorporates the Nuked survival map, new variants for Totenreich, and, coming mid-season, Kowakujō—a spectacular map set in a Japanese castle built next to an active volcano.
Five multiplayer maps and the return of historic classics
Multiplayer is not falling behind either.
Season 04 introduces several new and remastered battlegrounds, including Liminal, a map where the central layout constantly changes during the match; Primetime, inspired by Japanese TV game shows; and the return of Vertigo, one of the most memorable maps from Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
Later down the line, revamped versions of Launch and the brand-new map Zenith will also arrive, expanding the available rotation even further.
Alongside them, highly popular modes make a comeback, such as Gunfight, Knife Fight, Blueprint Gun Game, and the new Black Ops Classic, designed to capture the feel of the franchise's more traditional installments.
New weapons, a fresh storyline, and more endgame content
The season also continues to develop the narrative kicked off in the launch cinematic.
Following the capture of David Mason and the threat of the virus engineered by Karma, the new Operation Wall Breaker takes the conflict to a whole new level, connecting directly with the central events of Black Ops 7.
On the gameplay front, players will be able to unlock six new weapons, including the KRS-7.62 sniper rifle, the CBRS-3 SMG, the AN-94 assault rifle, and other additions distributed across the Battle Pass, seasonal events, and weekly challenges.
The Endgame mode also receives new missions, rewards, and additional progression for high-level Operators.
A Season Built to Define the Summer
Season 04 arrives at a pivotal moment for Call of Duty.
With a completely modernized Fortune’s Keep, an incredibly ambitious commitment to Zombies, fresh competitive maps, and a massive amount of free content, Activision is looking to turn this update into the franchise's definitive summer kickoff.
Given the sheer scale of these changes, it's hard to argue otherwise.
Few recent seasons have managed to bundle so many major updates across all core modes at the same time.
From the return of a legendary island to a near-total reinvention of Zombies, Season 04 aims to prove that Call of Duty still has plenty of ways to surprise its community.
