Dead by Daylight has opened the Sunflesh Rift, introducing a desert-inspired reward track filled with ancient armor, gilded masks, flowing black robes and Outfits that reinterpret familiar Killers and Survivors through stories of faith, obsession and supernatural discovery.

Taurie Cain and The Wraith lead the Rift with new Ascended Outfits, while The Plague, Kate Denson, Zarina Kassir and Orela Rose receive additional unlockable looks. The collection combines the oppressive heat of an ancient wasteland with Dead by Daylight’s established gothic imagery, creating a theme that feels ceremonial, luxurious and deeply corrupted.

The reveal trailer frames Sunflesh through the language of ancient tales and interwoven fate. These are not ordinary summer cosmetics built around beaches or relaxation. They depict soldiers, scavengers, worshippers and wanderers drawn toward forces they cannot fully understand.

As always in The Entity’s Realm, the treasures buried beneath the sand are inseparable from the horror waiting beside them.

Sunflesh replaces summer comfort with ritualistic horror

Seasonal cosmetics often use summer as an opportunity for brighter colors, lighter clothing and playful designs. Sunflesh moves in the opposite direction.

Its desert is not a holiday destination. It is a place of exposure, exhaustion and ancient power. The collection uses black fabric, gold ornamentation, veiled faces and ceremonial silhouettes to make its characters look as though they belong to a civilization that has already been consumed by something supernatural.

The result is closer to gothic archaeology than conventional summer fashion.

Sunlight does not represent safety here. It reveals the scale of the ruins, burns away protection and leaves every traveler visible beneath an empty sky. Sand covers whatever history attempted to leave behind, while tombs and buried structures suggest that the landscape is concealing more than abandoned treasure.

That atmosphere fits Dead by Daylight particularly well. The game usually associates horror with darkness, forests, industrial ruins and enclosed spaces. Sunflesh demonstrates that terror can remain effective in open daylight when the environment itself feels hostile.

The oppressive sun becomes another form of confinement.

Taurie Cain becomes an Ardent Believer from another ancient war

Taurie Cain receives one of Sunflesh’s two featured Ascended Outfits: Ardent Believer.

The Outfit describes the clothes of an ancient soldier who disobeyed her orders and pursued a new divine force promising transcendence. That story closely reflects the central conflict of Taurie’s established character.

Taurie was raised by the Disciples of the Black Talon, a secret society devoted to an otherworldly entity they believed could help humanity transcend mortal existence. Her childhood and adult life were shaped by forbidden archaeology, occult rituals and dangerous expeditions into places where different realities overlapped.

She did not encounter the supernatural accidentally. She actively sought it.

Ardent Believer translates that obsession into an older historical setting. Instead of serving a modern cult operating through laboratories and underground facilities, this version of Taurie appears to be a soldier who abandons military duty after discovering a supposedly higher calling.

The promise of transcendence remains the same. Only the civilization surrounding it has changed.

That continuity makes the Outfit more effective than an unrelated costume. Taurie’s visual identity is altered, but the underlying character remains recognizable: disciplined, fearless and dangerously willing to sacrifice everything for a force she considers divine.

Taurie’s faith has always contained the possibility of betrayal

The title Ardent Believer presents Taurie’s conviction as its defining quality, but Dead by Daylight players already know how dangerous that conviction can become.

Taurie believed the Black Talon’s domain would transform her into a pure disciple. She regarded sacrifice as a necessary step toward humanity’s ascension and accepted increasingly violent rituals as proof of her loyalty.

When The Fog finally claimed her, she did not arrive in the divine realm as a chosen servant. She arrived as another Survivor trapped inside an endless cycle of suffering.

Sunflesh appears to preserve that tragic structure.

The ancient soldier defies her orders and follows a new power because it offers transcendence. The Outfit’s story does not confirm whether the promise is genuine, whether the force deserves worship or whether Taurie understands the price it will demand.

Her faith may empower her, but it also makes her vulnerable to manipulation.

That ambiguity is essential to Taurie. She is unusual among Dead by Daylight’s Survivors because her relationship with eldritch evil did not begin with simple opposition. She admired it, served it and wanted to become part of it.

Ardent Believer turns that contradiction into the visual centerpiece of the Rift.

The Wraith returns to the scrapyard through an ancient fantasy

The Wraith receives Sunflesh’s second Ascended Outfit: Scrap Collector.

Its accompanying story presents him as an ancient scavenger who discovers an apparently endless treasure beneath a rapturous phenomenon. That premise gives the collection another reinterpretation closely connected to the character’s past.

Before becoming The Wraith, Philip Ojomo worked at Autohaven Wreckers, operating machinery that crushed abandoned vehicles into compact blocks of metal. He believed he had found honest work after escaping violence in Nigeria, only to discover that his employer had been hiding victims inside the cars.

Philip had unknowingly become part of a system for disposing of human bodies.

Scrap Collector returns him to the act of searching through discarded material, but relocates that idea into an ancient desert. The industrial scrapyard becomes a buried treasure site. Crushed vehicles become forgotten relics. The corrupt employer is replaced by a supernatural phenomenon offering limitless wealth.

The surrounding details change, but the danger remains rooted in what the treasure conceals.

Endless treasure is exactly the kind of promise The Entity would exploit

The phrase “endless treasure” immediately makes Scrap Collector sound less fortunate than it first appears.

In horror, limitless wealth rarely exists without a cost. The discovery may be a trap, a source of corruption or another mechanism through which a desperate person is gradually transformed into something monstrous.

That interpretation suits The Wraith.

Philip’s tragedy began because he trusted the apparent simplicity of his work. He processed the material placed before him without understanding what had been hidden inside it. When the truth became impossible to ignore, his response was not measured justice but violent vengeance.

The Sunflesh version appears positioned to repeat that pattern through myth rather than industry.

An ancient scavenger finds treasure at the base of a rapturous phenomenon. Perhaps the discovery promises freedom from poverty or status beyond anything he could otherwise obtain. Perhaps each recovered object draws him closer to the force responsible for creating it.

Either way, the wording suggests that the treasure is not simply waiting to be collected. Something is producing it, guarding it or using it to attract those willing to dig deeper.

The Wraith may believe he has found abundance. In The Fog, abundance is often another word for bait.

Ascended Outfits give the Rift’s central characters greater presence

Taurie Cain and The Wraith are not only receiving standard Rift cosmetics. Their Sunflesh appearances belong to Dead by Daylight’s Ascended Outfit rarity.

Ascended Outfits are designed to go beyond a conventional model and texture replacement by incorporating additional visual and sound effects. That gives the featured characters a more pronounced transformation during Trials.

For The Wraith, this is particularly relevant.

His gameplay already depends on a strong audiovisual identity. The Wailing Bell announces his transition between visible and cloaked states, while his distorted silhouette and sudden emergence create much of the tension surrounding his approach.

An Ascended treatment can reinforce the Scrap Collector theme whenever he cloaks, moves or prepares to strike. The challenge is ensuring that the new effects remain readable and do not interfere with the information Survivors need when responding to his Power.

Taurie does not have a Killer Power to visually transform, but additional effects can still make Ardent Believer feel more ceremonial and supernatural during movement, interaction and presentation sequences.

The two Outfits serve different sides of the Rift. Taurie represents devotion to the ancient force. The Wraith represents someone drawn toward what that force has left behind.

The Plague is the most natural match for Sunflesh’s ancient imagery

The Plague is among the additional characters receiving an unlockable Sunflesh Outfit, and no one in the lineup fits the collection’s ancient setting more naturally.

Adiris lived in Babylon, served within the Temple of Purgation and became a religious leader during a devastating epidemic. Her history already includes ceremonial clothing, precious jewelry, incense, purification rituals and desperate appeals to divine power.

Sunflesh’s gilded masks and flowing black robes can build directly upon those foundations.

Where other characters are being reimagined through an ancient desert fantasy, The Plague already originates from that kind of world. Her inclusion allows the collection to amplify existing elements rather than inventing a completely new role for her.

Gold can represent the status she achieved as High Priestess. A mask or veil can recall her attempts to hide the visible symptoms of disease. Ceremonial fabrics can reinforce the faith that pushed her to continue performing rituals even as her own body deteriorated.

The desert heat also complements her physical horror. Adiris is associated with illness, dehydration, corrupted water and the failure of religious purification. Sunflesh surrounds those themes with an environment where water would be precious and infection could spread through an already weakened population.

She does not need to be adapted to the collection. The collection almost feels designed around her.

Gilded masks make beauty and concealment inseparable

Behaviour describes Sunflesh through gilded masks and flowing black robes, two visual elements that capture the collection’s central contradiction.

Gold suggests wealth, divinity and preserved historical power. Masks suggest secrecy, ritual and the loss of individual identity.

Combined, they create characters who appear elevated and imprisoned at the same time.

A gilded mask can transform its wearer into a priest, soldier or divine representative, but it also hides the person underneath. That is particularly appropriate within Dead by Daylight, where many characters are gradually reduced to the role The Entity expects them to perform.

Killers become instruments of the Trial. Survivors become repeated participants in a ritual whose rules they cannot permanently escape.

The Sunflesh Outfits can therefore be read as uniforms from another cycle of sacrifice. The characters may belong to different civilizations or stories, but the shared robes and masks imply that all of them have been drawn into the same ancient structure.

Their fates are interwoven because none of them truly controls the tale they inhabit.

Kate Denson brings an unexpected contrast to the collection

Kate Denson is one of the least obvious characters in the Sunflesh lineup, which may make her Outfit one of the more interesting additions.

Kate is normally associated with music, open roads, community and an instinctive ability to bring hope into difficult situations. Her visual catalogue often reflects her life as a singer and traveler rather than occult scholarship or ancient warfare.

Placing her inside Sunflesh’s gothic desert aesthetic creates a deliberate contrast.

She can become the wandering storyteller of the collection: someone carrying songs and legends between settlements, preserving ancient tales until those stories begin responding to her presence.

That interpretation fits the trailer’s emphasis on strands of fate woven through mythology. Oral tradition, music and storytelling are methods through which civilizations preserve warnings long after the original event has disappeared beneath the sand.

Kate may not understand the eldritch power surrounding the other characters, but she would be capable of carrying its story.

The final Outfit will determine how directly Behaviour connects her established identity to the theme. A successful design should allow Kate to remain recognizable beneath the robes and ornamentation rather than simply presenting her as a generic desert adventurer.

Zarina Kassir is built to uncover what the desert tried to hide

Zarina Kassir is another strong thematic selection because her life was defined by investigation.

As a documentarian, Zarina pursued hidden stories and placed herself in danger to expose injustice. Her search for answers eventually led her into a sealed section of Hellshire Penitentiary, where she investigated the massacre associated with The Deathslinger before disappearing into The Fog.

Sunflesh gives that investigative instinct a different kind of mystery.

Buried civilizations, supernatural phenomena and ancient cults all produce the kind of incomplete evidence that would attract Zarina. She would not be satisfied by legends alone. She would search tombs, study artifacts and attempt to identify the human decisions concealed beneath divine explanations.

That makes her a useful counterpoint to Taurie.

Taurie encounters an otherworldly force and chooses devotion. Zarina encounters a hidden system and looks for the truth behind it.

The same discovery could therefore send them in opposite directions. One sees transcendence. The other sees a story that someone powerful does not want revealed.

Their inclusion in the same Rift strengthens the idea that Sunflesh is not one linear narrative, but several responses to the same ancient mystery.

Orela Rose turns the collection’s horror into a rescue mission

Orela Rose completes the confirmed Survivor lineup.

Her established identity is rooted in emergency response, protection and the refusal to leave vulnerable people behind. After losing her friend in an accident, Orela became an EMT so that she would never again be powerless while someone needed help.

That motivation can translate effectively into Sunflesh’s hostile landscape.

A desert disaster creates immediate survival pressures: injury, exposure, dehydration and isolation. Tombs and ruined structures add traps, collapses and supernatural threats that ordinary medical knowledge cannot fully explain.

Orela would still respond in the same way. She would assess the danger, identify who could be saved and move toward the people calling for assistance.

Her presence also prevents the collection from focusing exclusively on worshippers, treasure hunters and investigators. Orela represents practical compassion inside a setting dominated by ambition and forbidden knowledge.

Others may enter the ruins because they want transcendence, wealth or answers. Orela enters because someone did not return.

That difference gives her Outfit the opportunity to express heroism without abandoning Sunflesh’s darker ceremonial style.

The Rift gives both Killer and Survivor players meaningful targets

Sunflesh continues Dead by Daylight’s structure of dividing rewards across a Free Track and a Premium Track.

Players progress by completing Rift Quests and participating in Trials, with Daily, Weekly and Milestone objectives encouraging different characters, strategies and levels of commitment. The current Rift cycle provides twelve weeks of challenges, giving players a substantial period in which to work through its reward track.

The Premium Rift Pass costs 1,000 Auric Cells and retroactively unlocks earned Premium rewards if purchased after progression has already begun. That allows players to evaluate how far they have advanced before committing to the paid track.

This structure is particularly relevant to Sunflesh because its principal rewards are distributed across several characters.

A Wraith main may focus immediately on Scrap Collector, while Taurie players have a clear long-term target in Ardent Believer. Players who prefer The Plague, Kate, Zarina or Orela still receive character-specific reasons to progress even when the two Ascended Outfits do not match their usual roster.

The broader collection also reduces the risk that the Rift depends entirely on one popular character. Its theme is shared across Killers and Survivors from very different Chapters and periods of Dead by Daylight’s history.

Sunflesh arrives after being teased during the tenth anniversary

Behaviour first previewed the Sunflesh Collection during Dead by Daylight’s tenth-anniversary celebrations in June.

At the time, it was presented as an upcoming desert-inspired cosmetic line connected to a future Rift. The reveal trailer now shows how that early concept has been expanded into a complete reward track.

The timing is useful for Dead by Daylight.

The game’s anniversary period introduced several major announcements, collaborations and future projects. Sunflesh provides a more immediate reason to continue playing after the larger celebration, turning one of the broadcast’s cosmetic previews into a progression cycle available within weeks.

It also demonstrates the increasingly ambitious visual direction of modern Rifts.

Rather than grouping unrelated Outfits beneath a loose seasonal label, Sunflesh establishes a recognizable world. Its characters appear to belong to different chapters of the same lost mythology, linked through symbols, materials and their relationship with the force beneath the desert.

That cohesion makes every unlocked reward feel like another fragment of the collection rather than an isolated cosmetic occupying a tier.

The desert has rewritten familiar tragedies

Sunflesh works because it does not need to separate its visual theme from Dead by Daylight’s character histories.

Taurie Cain remains a believer chasing transcendence. The Wraith remains a worker drawn into horror by what he finds among discarded material. The Plague remains a priestess surrounded by ritual, gold and disease. Zarina continues searching for hidden truth, while Orela moves toward people in danger.

Even the characters whose connection is less immediate can be positioned inside the same chain of ancient stories.

The Rift takes recognizable motivations and asks how they might have unfolded in another place, another era or another civilization already touched by eldritch power.

Its golden surfaces promise divine splendor. Its black robes suggest mourning. Its masks conceal whether the people wearing them are rulers, servants or sacrifices.

The Sunflesh Rift is available now with Free and Premium reward tracks.

There may be treasure beneath the dunes, but Dead by Daylight has never rewarded anyone for believing that buried things should remain undisturbed.
