Diablo IV enters a new chapter on June 30 with Season of Death Awakening, a season built around a growing Death Cult, unstable rifts from Pandemonium, a new Seasonal Lair Boss, and one of the game’s biggest itemisation changes to date. The update also brings Mythic Uniques 3.0, the full launch of the Tower and Leaderboards, Solo Self Found mode, a free Warlock trial, and a Diablo IV x Overwatch collaboration.
The gameplay trailer makes its tone clear from the start: sooner or later, Death comes for everyone. But this season is not only about a new questline or another final boss encounter. Blizzard is using Death Awakening to introduce a new risk-and-reward loop that asks players how long they are willing to keep a dangerous rift open before claiming what they have earned.
The result is a season with new reasons to explore Helltides, challenge Lair Bosses, reassess Unique items, and test builds across both regular progression and more competitive systems.
Pandemonium Ruptures turn Sanctuary into a risk-reward battlefield
The central seasonal mechanic is the arrival of Pandemonium Ruptures, arcane rifts tearing through the boundary between Sanctuary and Pandemonium.
These ruptures can appear throughout the overworld, but they are more common inside Helltide zones. Players activate them by defeating guardians around Death’s Head Idols, opening the rift and beginning a ritual circle. The longer a Rupture remains open, the greater the potential rewards, but the more pressure players face from enemies and Tears that must be sealed.
Blizzard has confirmed three types. Standard Ruptures can appear across Sanctuary, Surging Ruptures can replace local Helltide events, and Colossal Ruptures are exclusive to the Fields of Desecration, the World Boss Arena southeast of Zarbinzet.
The system is built around a clear choice. Closing a Rupture early secures progress and resources, while keeping it active longer creates a stronger reward opportunity. It can also lead to the appearance of a Realmwalker, particularly through mastered Surging Ruptures or completed Colossal Ruptures.
Deathtoll Chamber and the Corrupted Reaper raise the stakes
Defeating a Realmwalker opens access to the new Deathtoll Chamber, a one-room mini-dungeon containing a special Rupture activity and additional rewards.
The Chamber is positioned as the best source of Superior Lair Keys, which are needed to open the new Seasonal Lair Boss’s reward cache on Torment I and above. It also introduces the Risen, a new monster family emerging from the rifts.
Among them are Gravehounds, which drop orbs when defeated. Those orbs can be absorbed by an Exarch, a special Risen enemy that gains a more powerful attack when players fail to intercept them. It is a mechanic that forces players to manage space and priorities even when a fight is already getting crowded.
Season of Death Awakening also introduces the Corrupted Reaper, a new Seasonal Lair Boss found in the Pandemonium Threshold at Zarbinzet. Once players defeat the boss during the seasonal questline, the encounter becomes repeatable.
The Corrupted Reaper is not just another endgame target. It offers some of the best direct chances to obtain Mythic Uniques and the Pandemonium Fragments needed to craft them.
Mythic Uniques 3.0 reshapes how Unique items work
One of the most significant changes in Season of Death Awakening is Mythic Uniques 3.0.
From this season onward, any Unique item can drop as Mythic or be converted into a Mythic Unique. Mythic is no longer treated as a separate rarity; it becomes a modifiable item quality. Mythic Uniques are always Ancestral, have their Unique Power increased by 30%, and roll all other affixes at maximum values.
Players can craft these items through the Horadric Cube using Pandemonium Fragments or through the Jeweler using Runes and Resplendent Sparks. They can also come directly from the Corrupted Reaper, from Season Rank caches, or as an extremely rare outcome whenever an Ancestral Unique would normally drop.
The update is not only about more power. Blizzard has adjusted crafting so that a Unique item used as a base will return a Mythic Unique for the same equipment slot. A Unique pair of boots, for example, will create a random class-usable Mythic pair of boots rather than any unrelated armor item.
That should make the chase for major build-defining items more deliberate and easier to plan around. There is one important restriction: players can equip only one crafted Mythic Unique at a time. Mythics obtained from drops or caches are not subject to that same limit.
Overwatch enters Sanctuary while Warlock becomes free to try
Season of Death Awakening also launches the Diablo IV x Overwatch collaboration.
From the start of the season, players can defeat Elite and Champion monsters to earn Eye of the Overwatch, a currency used to progress through the free Overwatch Reliquary. Confirmed rewards include emblems, a mount trophy, three weapon cosmetics, and Diablo IV’s first earnable dye.
Completing the Reliquary will reward players with Kiriko’s Fox Spirit as a companion. Tejal’s Shop will also offer exclusive Overwatch-inspired cosmetic skins beginning on the same day.
Blizzard is also making the Warlock available through a limited free trial from June 30 through July 7. The trial is available on Battle.net, Xbox, and PlayStation, letting players use the class up to level 30. Anyone who purchases the Lord of Hatred expansion can continue progressing on that same character.
The update also moves the Tower and Leaderboards out of beta, introducing cosmetic rewards based on ranking, new titles, Halos, and dedicated Solo Self Found Leaderboards for both Normal and Hardcore characters.
Season of Death Awakening gives every build a new destination
Season of Death Awakening does not look like a routine content rotation.
Pandemonium Ruptures change the way players move through Sanctuary. Deathtoll Chambers add a new high-risk objective. The Corrupted Reaper provides a focused route for players chasing powerful rewards. And Mythic Uniques 3.0 forces a broader rethink of what it means to find or craft the best possible version of an item.
Add the Overwatch collaboration, the free Warlock trial, Solo Self Found mode, and new Tower rewards, and Blizzard has created a season with different paths for build crafters, leaderboard competitors, solo players, and cosmetic collectors alike.
On June 30, Death wakes in Sanctuary.
The only question is whether players will be ready when it arrives.
