The Slayer loses his shield and unleashes a new nightmare in Revelations, the first expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages

08/06/2026 - 13:55

id Software and Bethesda took advantage of the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 to officially present Revelations, the first expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages. This brand-new campaign will continue the Slayer's story starting July 7. Far from being a simple pack of extra missions, the studio promises an experience loaded with fresh mechanics, unprecedented enemies, and one of the biggest gameplay shake-ups seen in the recent history of the franchise.

The expansion will plunge the Slayer into a nightmarish new region where he must confront both the demons of Hell and the hidden secrets of his own past.

A story betrayal, redemption, and divine horrors

According to Bethesda's official description, Revelations begins with a wounded and betrayed Slayer awakening in a brutal form of purgatory.

To escape, he must face hidden truths, uncover new mysteries, and defeat an entity described as an "abomination of the gods"—a threat that appears to surpass many of the enemies encountered in the main campaign.

The narrative also introduces a mysterious ally whose identity remains cloaked in shadow, fueling community theories regarding potential connections to other chapters in the DOOM timeline.

The gameplay revolution. Entering the chain spear

The true star of the trailer isn't a demon or an environment.

It is a brand-new weapon.

The Chain Spear temporarily replaces the iconic Shield Saw as the Slayer’s primary tool, radically altering how players approach combat encounters.

Unlike the shield, the spear allows players to:

  • Dash toward enemies.
  • Grapple and pull themselves quickly to distant targets.
  • Execute advanced mobility maneuvers.
  • Chain aggressive close-quarters attacks.
  • Utilize new exploration routes and platforming sequences.

id Software emphasizes that the Chain Spear heavily rewards high-skill players by combining mobility, precision, and raw aggression into a single devastating tool.

New demons, deeper exploration, and intricate level design

Revelations will also significantly expand the game's playable content.

Bethesda has confirmed:

  • Brand-new, never-before-seen levels.
  • Deeper puzzles.
  • Expansion-exclusive demons.
  • New secrets and hidden exploration elements.
  • Mechanics designed specifically around the Chain Spear.

The studio has been hinting for months that this DLC would be far more ambitious than traditional franchise expansions, and now they seem ready to prove it.

Hugo Martin compared it to a full sequel

The sheer scale of Revelations didn't just turn heads because of the trailer.

Months before the official announcement, Game Director Hugo Martin teased that the project was "massive," going as far as to describe it as something that "felt almost like a sequel" due to the gameplay overhauls and the sheer volume of content developed.

While that statement initially sparked skepticism among segments of the community, the footage shown during the Xbox Showcase seems to fully back up the project's lofty ambitions.

Ripatorium 3.0 also drops on July 7

Launching alongside the expansion as a free update for all players is Ripatorium 3.0, a major overhaul for the game's customizable challenge mod.

The update incorporates:

  • More configuration options.
  • New customization systems.
  • Savable presets.
  • Improved code generation for seamless challenge sharing.

Additionally, players who successfully conquer Revelations will unlock new maps, demons, and fully upgraded weapons to unleash within the Ripatorium.

Hell calls upon the slayer once more

Since its launch, DOOM: The Dark Ages established itself as one of the most successful entries in the franchise, thanks to its gritty dark-fantasy setting, massive environments, and the introduction of the Shield Saw as the centerpiece of combat.

Now, Revelations looks poised to break those very rules.

For the first time in this era of the saga, the Slayer will cast aside his shield to embrace a terrifying new form of destruction.

And if the trailer makes one thing crystal clear, it's that Hell still hoards many secrets.

And a hell of a lot more demons left to rip and tear..
