Appalachia has survived plenty of horrors, but Fallout 76’s next update brings a threat with a particularly unsettling reputation. Launching September 15, 2026, The Slasher sends players after the culprit behind a series of gruesome crimes that suggest the Pint-Sized Slasher may have returned. Gathering clues, investigating graves and confronting the people surrounding that legend will be central to the hunt.

Bethesda’s new overview features Creative Director Jon Rush and Senior Community Manager Richard Stanford introducing the update alongside Season 26, “Beware the Blood Moon.” The result is an autumn release that pairs a developing horror mystery with a new collection of sinister seasonal rewards.

Beyond the bloodshed, September’s update also brings changes to seasonal progression, unique weapon customization and console support, giving players several reasons to revisit the wasteland.

A Murder Investigation That Unfolds Over Weeks

The Slasher’s story will develop across multiple weeks. Breaking News emergency broadcasts will deliver fresh leads, while players tackle Slasher-worshipping cultists in Infestations, new Daily Ops challenges and grave-digging investigations. Bethesda describes the suspect’s apparent inspiration as a notorious serial killer from before the war.

That schedule is important: September 15 marks the beginning of the experience, rather than necessarily making every stage available immediately. The investigation is designed to develop as further activities become available.

The appeal of that approach is the possibility of following a shared mystery as it grows. A murder investigation gives those encounters a connecting purpose, with each new lead potentially changing how players understand the crimes. Whether the pacing sustains that suspense will depend on the finished update, but the structure establishes a clear reason to return beyond collecting another set of daily rewards.

Bethesda’s earlier announcement also identifies a confrontation with a Slasher impersonator, with a chance to earn a distinctive Power Armor set and the new Super Slasher weapon. Those are potential encounter rewards, not guaranteed items simply for logging in.

Season 26 Brings the Blood Moon Home

“Beware the Blood Moon” launches alongside The Slasher, extending the horror theme into the seasonal reward lineup. Players will earn S.C.O.R.E., gather Tickets and redeem them for items during the season.

Bethesda’s confirmed highlights include the Batty Skirt, Blood Moon Power Armor Paint, Creepy Cultist Well and Blood Moon Weather Control Station. The selection covers both character customization and additions suited to an ominous C.A.M.P.

The pairing gives the update two complementary forms of progression. Investigating the killings supplies the narrative thread, while the season offers longer-term collection goals. Players interested in building a horror-themed home have a different motivation from those primarily following the killer, even though both sides share the same macabre direction.

These are the rewards Bethesda has specifically highlighted in its latest overview. Earlier test-server discoveries should not be treated as a final catalogue, particularly when it comes to item properties, unlock requirements or Ticket costs.

Legacy Seasons Return—With a Shared Ticket Budget

The Slasher also introduces Legacy Seasons, bringing an older season back alongside the current one. The first returning selection is Armor Ace and the Power Patrol in Cold Steel, with Legacy Seasons currently planned to remain available for one full season.

Both reward tracks use the same Tickets. Players can spend them on current or returning rewards, but Legacy rewards must be claimed in sequence; the current season retains its existing unlock structure.

Previously earned rewards—and eligible seasonal items already purchased through the Atomic Shop—will appear as claimed. Bethesda has also added some new rewards to the returning selection. However, the original commemorative game board will not be obtainable, and the first Legacy Season has no bonus page.

The practical trade-off is choice versus competition for the same currency. This is another opportunity to collect missed items, not a separate supply of Tickets. Checking both tracks before spending should help players prioritize, especially if a desired Legacy reward sits behind several earlier unlocks.

Named Weapons Get Another Chance at the Workbench

Unique weapon crafting is another substantial part of the release. Bethesda says players will be able to change Legendary mods on more than 80 uniquely named weapons found throughout the wasteland.

For build-focused players, that could be one of the update’s most consequential additions. Greater control over Legendary effects creates a reason to reconsider named equipment that does not currently suit a preferred loadout.

It also raises more useful questions than whether a weapon is simply “good” or “bad”: which effects complement a particular build, and is the resulting combination worth investing resources in? Those judgments will depend on the live implementation.

The announcement establishes broader customization, but it is not a complete crafting guide. Exact resource requirements and the strongest combinations should be assessed against the released system rather than assumed from preliminary testing.

Console Improvements Accompany the Horror

Bethesda has also announced native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions, with public testing beginning August 26. Its stated performance target is 60 FPS across Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro.

The published specifications include 4K support on Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro, 1440p on standard PS5, and variable refresh rate support on compatible current-generation consoles and displays. These remain announced targets and features, rather than independently verified guarantees of performance in every situation.

Bethesda also clarified that previously mentioned improvements to draw distance and shadows described the difference between older and newer consoles. Players already using PS5 or Xbox Series X should not interpret those particular claims as entirely new visual enhancements.

The Slasher and “Beware the Blood Moon” begin September 15. Between the unfolding investigation, seasonal collectibles and wider system changes, the update offers more than a Halloween makeover. The central invitation, however, remains appropriately grim: gather your group, follow the evidence and discover who is turning an old legend into Appalachia’s newest nightmare.
