A masked murderer is stalking Appalachia in Fallout 76’s latest free update. The Slasher is available now for all players, introducing a multiweek investigation built around emergency radio broadcasts, increasingly dangerous assignments and the possible return of one of pre-war America’s most infamous killers.
Rather than delivering its complete storyline through a single quest chain, The Slasher will unfold gradually. New broadcasts will air over several weeks, revealing additional clues and directing players toward fresh objectives. These assignments range from clearing Infestations occupied by fanatical Slasher supporters to digging up unmarked graves in search of evidence.
The deeper players venture into the mystery, the greater their chances of attracting the killer’s personal attention. Those who survive the investigation can pursue exclusive rewards that include a unique Power Armor set and the new Super Slasher melee weapon.
Bethesda has described The Slasher as a first-of-its-kind Fallout 76 update. Its activities are layered over one another as the story develops, allowing the threat to escalate instead of disappearing after one afternoon of questing.
Has the Pint-Sized Slasher really returned?
The investigation begins with a string of macabre murders resembling the crimes of the Pint-Sized Slasher, a serial killer who terrorized the United States before the Great War.
Fallout players may recognize the name from earlier games and pieces of environmental storytelling. The Pint-Sized Slasher became part of pre-war popular culture, inspiring costumes and urban legends despite the disturbing crimes associated with the character.
In Fallout 76, the apparent return of the killer raises several possibilities. Appalachia could be dealing with the original Slasher, an imitator exploiting the old legend or a larger group using the identity to spread fear. Bethesda is deliberately keeping the truth behind the murders concealed while the investigation unfolds.
The killer is also supported by followers who appear to treat the Slasher as something more than a conventional murderer. Reports describe fanatics in clown masks invading settlements, while Slasher-worshipping cultists have begun occupying Infestation zones.
That combination turns the storyline into more than a hunt for one enemy. Players must investigate an emerging movement whose members are actively recreating and celebrating the Slasher’s crimes.
The investigation starts through the Pip-Boy radio
Players can begin The Slasher storyline by opening the Pip-Boy and tuning into the Breaking News broadcast station. The transmissions are delivered through The Debunker Radio, providing updates about the latest incidents and instructions for the next stage of the investigation.
Additional emergency broadcasts will become available over the weeks following the update. Each transmission advances the mystery and directs the community toward another task, creating a shared narrative schedule rather than making every stage immediately accessible.
This structure changes the usual rhythm of a Fallout 76 update. Players cannot rush through the entire Slasher storyline on launch day. They will need to return for new broadcasts and follow the investigation as Bethesda activates additional layers.
The format also allows the atmosphere surrounding the killer to develop progressively. Early assignments may concentrate on evidence and the Slasher’s followers, while later stages should bring players closer to the figure directing the violence.
Bethesda has confirmed that completing more broadcasts and associated tasks increases the likelihood of receiving the Slasher’s direct attention. The investigation will ultimately force players to corner the villain—or discover what happens when the villain corners them first.
Infestations become part of the murder spree
Infestations play an important role in The Slasher’s activities. Players will encounter locations occupied by hostile supporters who have embraced the killer’s identity and transformed existing trouble spots into gathering places for the cult.
Clearing these areas contributes to the wider investigation, but the update also modifies how Infestations function across Fallout 76. Active zones now appear beneath dark fog on the map instead of the previous green-circle presentation, giving them a more threatening and immediately recognizable visual identity.
Players can toggle Infestation discovery notifications through the settings menu. Fast travelling through an Infestation window or the Recent Activity list now joins another player rather than sending the traveller to a fixed location. Joining teammates inside an Infestation zone is also free, making it easier to bring reinforcements into these PvE encounters.
Infestation bosses have received reduced health, while Bethesda says the update increases the drop rates of certain rewards. The flyout interface should now appear correctly before an Infestation has already been cleared, and a previous issue that could cause a boss to spawn as a standard enemy has been addressed.
These improvements extend beyond the Slasher storyline. Even after the current investigation concludes, players should encounter a more readable and convenient version of the Infestation system.
Graves, cultists and Daily Ops lead toward the truth
The emergency broadcasts send players across multiple types of content rather than confining the story to one location. Confirmed tasks include fighting Slasher fanatics inside Infestations, undertaking new Daily Ops challenges and excavating unmarked graves for clues.
The grave-digging assignments support the investigative side of the update, asking players to reconstruct events instead of simply following objective markers toward another combat arena. Meanwhile, Infestations and Daily Ops provide repeatable group-oriented action around the same horror theme.
Bethesda says the new activities accumulate as subsequent layers unlock. That wording suggests later stages will coexist with earlier elements, causing the overall event to become more intense as the mystery progresses.
The approach has the potential to make Appalachia feel temporarily altered by the Slasher’s presence. Instead of adding one isolated quest, the update connects radio broadcasts, environmental investigations, existing activities and new enemy encounters through a common storyline.
The exact identity of the murderer and the circumstances behind the apparent revival remain part of the mystery. Bethesda has only warned that even defeating the villain may not guarantee that the Slasher remains dead.
The Super Slasher and Power Armor headline the rewards
Following the broadcasts and surviving the final confrontations can earn players several exclusive items. Bethesda’s launch announcement highlights a unique Slasher-themed Power Armor set and the Super Slasher weapon.
The Super Slasher is a new melee weapon associated directly with the killer. The update’s release notes identify Bleed Damage as its unique effect, fitting a weapon designed around repeated close-range cuts.
Its arrival also coincides with a major change to unique-item crafting. Unique weapons and armour can now have their Legendary Mods replaced, and players can add a fourth Legendary Mod to eligible items.
That system gives the Super Slasher and numerous existing unique rewards more flexibility. Instead of discarding a visually or mechanically distinctive weapon because its predetermined Legendary effects do not support a particular build, players can invest resources into adapting the item.
Unique crafting is not intended to be cheap. Modifying and crafting these items requires substantial amounts of Scrip, Legendary Modules and Vault Steel, with four-star equipment demanding more resources than three-star gear. The system nevertheless opens considerably more build potential across Appalachia’s collection of named weapons and armour.
Numerous older unique items have also received individual effects or updated properties. The list extends from early quest rewards to equipment introduced through later expansions and activities, making the crafting overhaul one of the update’s most consequential permanent changes.
Season 26 brings the Blood Moon to Appalachia
The Slasher launches alongside Fallout 76 Season 26: Beware the Blood Moon. Players can earn S.C.O.R.E., collect Tickets and exchange them for a selection of horror-themed seasonal rewards.
Confirmed rewards include the Blood Moon Weather Control Station, Creepy Cultist Well, Batty Skirt and Blood Moon Power Armor Paints. The season also contains bloodstained crafting stations, sinister C.A.M.P. decorations, outfits, weapon appearances and other cosmetics suited to the Halloween period.
The seasonal theme complements the update without being the same progression track as the Slasher investigation. Broadcast missions advance the murder mystery, while standard Fallout 76 challenges generate S.C.O.R.E. and Tickets for the Season 26 reward pages.
New seasonal fish and related recipes will join Appalachia’s waterways from September 22, adding a smaller activity for players who prefer fishing to chasing masked killers through dark forests.
Legacy Seasons give old rewards another chance
The update also introduces Legacy Seasons, a system that places a returning season alongside the current reward track. The first selection is Season 4: Armor Ace and the Power Patrol in Cold Steel.
Players can progress through the active and Legacy seasons simultaneously, but both tracks use the same pool of Tickets. Every Ticket spent on a returning reward is therefore one that cannot be spent on Season 26 without earning additional currency.
Legacy rewards must be claimed in a linear order, unlike the more flexible structure retained by current seasons. Previously claimed rewards and eligible items already purchased through the Atomic Shop are automatically marked as collected, allowing veteran players to move past them.
Bethesda has added some new rewards to the returning season, although the original seasonal game board is excluded. The studio considers those boards commemorative items showing that a player participated in the initial run.
Legacy Seasons are planned to rotate rather than disappear permanently after a single return. The community has already selected Season 10: Red Rocket “Across America” Presents: The City of Steel as the next Legacy Season, scheduled to become available with the winter update.
Native PS5 and Xbox Series versions arrive with the update
The Slasher update delivers native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Fallout 76. Bethesda says these releases provide improved performance and stability while allowing the team to optimize current- and previous-generation platforms separately.
The native versions target 60 frames per second across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. Xbox Series X, Xbox One X and PlayStation 5 Pro support 4K output on compatible displays, while PS5 and PS4 Pro support 1440p. Variable refresh rate support is available on Xbox Series consoles, PS5 and PS5 Pro, capped at 60 FPS.
Console players must download the appropriate native version from their platform’s store rather than receiving it as a small conversion patch.
The update itself is unusually large: approximately 119 GB through Steam, 119.7 GB through the Microsoft Store, 101 GB on Xbox and 92.2 GB on PlayStation. Bethesda explains that this is caused by repackaging the game across every platform. Once installed, Fallout 76 should occupy less storage space than it did before the update.
The Slasher is more than a seasonal quest line
The central experiment behind The Slasher is its episodic structure. Fallout 76 has previously used seasons, public events and timed activities to bring players back regularly, but this update applies that cadence directly to a developing mystery.
Whether the format succeeds will depend on the quality of its later broadcasts and whether the escalating encounters justify the wait between chapters. The confirmed structure is nevertheless more ambitious than releasing a short quest chain that experienced players can complete immediately.
It also arrives alongside several permanent improvements: customizable unique gear, revised Infestations, native current-generation console versions, Legacy Seasons and a substantial collection of fixes and balance adjustments.
The Slasher Update is available now to every Fallout 76 player. Anyone ready to begin the investigation can tune into the Breaking News station through the Pip-Boy—but following the signal may be exactly what the killer wants.
