Fortnite reinvents Battle Royale with Runners, the most ambitious season of Chapter 7

Following the events of the Shattered event, the island of Fortnite is no longer the same. The new gameplay trailer for Chapter 7 Season 3: Runnersshowcases in detail an update that not only changes the map, but also introduces a new way to progress between matches, something that could deeply transform the traditional Battle Royale experience.
The season, available since June 6, revolves around Sprites, creatures that have become the central axis of all gameplay. The interesting part is that they no longer function simply as temporary items within a match. They are now part of a persistent system that allows players to carry over progress and advantages into future encounters.
The island has been rebuilt after the Shattered disaster
The Zero Point explosion during the final event of Season 2 caused a dimensional fracture that completely reorganized the map. The result is Shattered Coast, a new version of the island where many familiar locations have been transformed or merged with other areas.
Epic has not simply added new points of interest. It has redesigned much of the geography to adapt it to the new exploration, extraction, and mobility mechanics that define Runners.
Sprites are much more than a new mechanic
The biggest change of the season is the Sprite collection system.
During matches, players can find creatures of different rarities scattered across the island. Each one grants special abilities while carried in the inventory. Some improve loot, others provide temporary invisibility, shield recovery, or even offensive effects capable of turning the tide of a fight.
However, the real innovation comes when a Sprite is successfully extracted. If the player survives the extraction process, the creature becomes part of a permanent collection and can be used in future matches by spending a new currency called Sprite Dust.
This means that, for the first time, players can start a Battle Royale match with advantages earned in previous encounters.
More mobility, new weapons, and a distinct identity
Runners also introduces new tools designed to reinforce the fast-paced nature of the season.
The arsenal includes new weapons such as the Surgical Burst Rifle, Chaos Exploder Rifle, Extending Focus Shotgun, and the Lancehead Pistol, inspired by the John Wick universe. In addition, Seven Sliders joins as a new mobility item that allows fast movement while still maintaining the ability to shoot.
Everything is designed to make encounters faster and more aggressive than in the previous season.
A season that seems to look toward extraction shooters
What stands out most about Runners is that Epic is incorporating elements from extraction shooters without abandoning Fortnite’s core Battle Royale formula.
Finding valuable resources, carrying them, surviving an extraction, and then using the rewards introduces a completely new strategic layer that did not previously exist in the mode.
This is not a small change.
It is arguably the most significant evolution Fortnite’s progression system has received in years.
Epic once again proves Fortnite keeps evolving
After nearly a decade in operation, Fortnite continues to reinvent itself at a pace few games can match.
Runners is not simply a new season with weapons and cosmetics.
It is an experiment that blends Battle Royale, persistent progression, and extraction mechanics into a single experience.
And if the new gameplay trailer makes anything clear, it is that Epic has no intention of playing it safe.
It prefers to break the rules and rebuild them from scratch.
