A dark manifesto challenges the fate of Teyvat in the new Genshin Impact storyline teaser

The stories of Genshin Impact have always been marked by a constant struggle between freedom and fate. However, the new storyline teaser released by HoYoverse, “Those Who Shun the Light,” adopts a much darker tone than usual, introducing a figure willing to challenge not only the rules of the world, but also the very principles that have sustained the history of Teyvat since its inception.
Far from offering clear answers, the video is built around a speech loaded with symbolism. Phrases such as “cast off this cumbersome life,” “forsake these ancient shackles,” or “descend into a funeral forged by true flames” convey the idea of a character who has decided to break away from everything they consider an imposition, even if the price is their own destruction.
The most striking reference appears around the concept of the “fire of sin,” an expression that has immediately sparked theories within the community. For years, Genshin Impact has explored themes related to rebellion against the gods, forbidden knowledge, and resistance against established systems. The new teaser seems to delve precisely in that direction, presenting a vision where sin ceases to be something to be avoided and instead becomes a source of purpose and power.
The tone of the video also recalls some of the most tragic and radical characters to have appeared in the main story. Throughout the different regions of Teyvat, HoYoverse has repeatedly shown individuals attempting to escape an imposed fate—whether by defying the Archons, altering memories, or seeking truths that the world seems hell-bent on hiding.
Because of this, many players interpret that “Those Who Shun the Light” could be related to events setting the stage for the game's next major narrative arc. This is especially true now that the main plot is drawing closer to answering fundamental questions about Celestia, the origin of Teyvat, and the forces operating behind the scenes since the beginning of the adventure.
The choice of the term “light” does not seem accidental either. Within the narrative of Genshin Impact, light is usually associated with order, divinity, and hope. Rejecting it implies embracing a completely different path, one where freedom can perhaps only be achieved through the destruction of existing structures.
Another relevant detail is the insistence on the concept of eternity. The phrase “remain in that eternal instant of evil” introduces an idea that connects with several themes previously explored by HoYoverse, particularly in regions where the pursuit of an eternal perfection ended up causing devastating consequences. The difference here is that the character seems to consciously accept that darkness instead of trying to fight it.
Visually, the teaser maintains the characteristic style of the game's major narrative previews: images laden with symbolism, fire, shadows, and a constant sense of inevitable tragedy. Rather than presenting a sequence of concrete events, it seeks to convey emotions and set the stage for future plot developments.
And that is precisely where its greatest appeal lies.
HoYoverse has been using these types of videos for years to introduce concepts that initially seem abstract, but later end up becoming fundamental pieces of Teyvat's narrative puzzle.
For now, “Those Who Shun the Light” leaves more questions than answers. Who is speaking these words? What does that fire of sin truly represent? And what system are they rebelling against?
The only thing that seems clear is that someone is willing to challenge the established order to its ultimate consequences.
And in the universe of Genshin Impact, those who decide to face the light rarely walk an easy path.
