Vodyanitsa Turns Her Genshin Impact Character Trailer Into a Haunting Siren Song

The sea has an answer, even when the heavens remain silent. HoYoverse has released the official character trailer for Vodyanitsa, one of the two new 5-star characters arriving with Genshin Impact Version 7.1, giving Snezhnaya's mysterious Water Imp an appropriately musical introduction just before she becomes playable.

Titled “Vodyanitsa: Tonight, We Sink as One,” the new trailer places considerably more emphasis on atmosphere, music and Vodyanitsa's supernatural connection to water than on presenting her as another conventional fighter.

“Pray to the heavens above, then entrust your sorrows to the faraway sea,” HoYoverse writes in the trailer's accompanying description. “The heavens may remain silent, but the waves will carry an answer back to you, like the lingering aria of a Water Imp.”

It is a fitting presentation for a character whose identity has gradually been built around performance, folklore and the disappearing Water Imps of Snezhnaya. It also arrives at the final possible moment: Vodyanitsa will become playable when Version 7.1 launches on September 23.

Vodyanitsa's Trailer Lets the Music Take Control

Character trailers in Genshin Impact frequently alternate between personality, combat demonstrations and spectacle. Vodyanitsa's introduction instead leans heavily into the idea that her voice is the spectacle.

Water, song and melancholy are inseparable from the character's presentation. Even the official wording accompanying the trailer frames her music as something capable of crossing a boundary that ordinary prayers cannot: the heavens may offer no response, but the sea still carries one back.

That idea fits Vodyanitsa remarkably well. She is not simply a professional singer using Hydro attacks as a visual motif. HoYoverse identifies her as an actual Water Imp, making the connection between her music and the sea part of what she is rather than merely part of her stage persona.

The trailer also continues a notably theatrical promotional campaign around the character. Vodyanitsa's earlier character teaser, “A Song from the Heart,” was released on September 17 and took a very different approach, exploring why people create art in the first place.

HoYoverse described art in that teaser as something that can emerge from ideals or simply from the necessity of surviving, arguing that wanting to be seen or remembered does not require some grander justification.

“Tonight, We Sink as One” shifts that idea toward Vodyanitsa herself. The performer is no longer simply talking about voices or encouraging someone else to discover one. She is allowed to become the performance.

From a Mysterious Name to Snezhnaya's Prima Donna

Vodyanitsa has had a relatively long road toward becoming playable.

One of the earliest official references arrived through the introduction of Linnea, when Vodyanitsa was already identified as the Prima Soprano of the Korolevskiy Troupe. In that appearance, she commented on Linnea and the strange voices the adventurer had brought back from different parts of the world.

HoYoverse later gave her a much more prominent role during the promotion of Snezhnaya.

The June “Sudden Snow” transcendence trailer introduced several important figures connected to the region, including Vodyanitsa alongside characters such as Pulcinella, Pantalone and the Tsaritsa. Vodyanitsa appeared as one of Snezhnaya's prominent performers, helping establish the Korolevskiy Troupe and its opera culture as part of the nation's identity.

Her full character reveal followed in August.

HoYoverse officially gave her the title “Lingering Siren-Song” and identified her as the Prima Donna of the Korolevskiy Troupe. Her element was confirmed as Hydro, while the accompanying material expanded on the folklore surrounding the Water Imps that once populated Snezhnaya.

The progression from background reference to playable character has therefore been deliberate. Players first heard her name through another character, then saw her within the wider Snezhnayan cast, and are now receiving dedicated teasers and trailers immediately before her release.

A Water Imp Who Has Parted From Her Kin

One of the most important distinctions between Vodyanitsa and many other Hydro characters is that the aquatic imagery surrounding her is literal.

HoYoverse describes her as a Water Imp who has parted from her kin. The folklore presented during her character reveal recalls a time when Water Imps could be found throughout Snezhnaya.

Some were performers. Others sang throughout the streets and alleys. More mischievous members of the species supposedly hid beneath the water, attracting curious people with beautiful songs before suddenly splashing them and disappearing again.

There is a playful quality to those stories, but Vodyanitsa's title — Lingering Siren-Song — gives them a more melancholic edge.

The official promotional material suggests a culture whose voices have become increasingly distant, while Vodyanitsa remains on stage carrying that musical identity into the present. Her role as a professional singer consequently becomes more than an occupation. It preserves something associated with her own people.

That context makes the language surrounding the new trailer particularly significant. The idea of the waves returning an answer “like the lingering aria of a Water Imp” can be read directly against that disappearing cultural presence without requiring the trailer to explain it explicitly.

Her Water Imp Form Is Also a Core Gameplay Mechanic

The transformation is not limited to story presentation.

Vodyanitsa joins Genshin Impact as a 5-star Hydro Catalyst character, and her Water Imp nature directly informs her gameplay.

HoYoverse describes her as a support-oriented character whose Elemental Skill allows her to transform into her Water Imp form and sustain her song. While the effect is active, she continuously supports the current character rather than requiring extended field time herself.

Her song can restore HP to the active character while also reducing enemy Hydro and Cryo RES and increasing the active character's ATK.

That gives Vodyanitsa multiple responsibilities within a single support package: healing, offensive amplification and resistance reduction.

The musical theme consequently has a mechanical purpose. Vodyanitsa does not simply sing during an animation before returning to ordinary Catalyst attacks. Sustaining the song becomes the mechanism through which she supports the rest of the party.

Her Elemental Burst continues the concept by carrying her voice across the battlefield while dealing AoE Hydro DMG.

Vodyanitsa Has Been Designed Around Stellar Swirl

Vodyanitsa also has a more specialized purpose within Version 7.1.

Both she and fellow newcomer Vesna interact with Stellar Swirl, with HoYoverse positioning the pair as new ways of developing teams built around the reaction.

Vodyanitsa's song can empower Stellar Vortices, reducing enemies' Anemo RES while increasing Stellar Swirl reaction damage.

Vesna approaches the system from another direction. She is a 5-star Anemo Sword wielder capable of converting Cryo Swirl reactions into Stellar Swirl reactions and using her Spirit Blades around Stellar Vortices to deal reaction-based damage.

That creates an obvious mechanical relationship between Version 7.1's two debut characters without making their roles identical.

Vesna helps drive the reaction and attack through it, while Vodyanitsa can provide the sustain and supporting effects that strengthen the resulting composition.

It also explains why Version 7.1 is launching both characters together rather than treating them as unrelated additions to the roster.

Her Transformation Changes Exploration Too

HoYoverse has increasingly given premium characters exploration mechanics that extend beyond ordinary combat, and Vodyanitsa continues that trend.

While transformed, she can move rapidly through water, an appropriate ability for a Water Imp. More unusually, HoYoverse says Vodyanitsa can maintain the form during open-world exploration and move around even when she is outside the water.

That should make her transformation one of the more visually distinctive traversal mechanics in the Snezhnaya roster.

Vesna receives her own exploration advantage through her identity as a Vila, allowing her to take flight. Version 7.1 is therefore placing considerable emphasis on ensuring that its new characters feel different not only during combat rotations but while travelling through Teyvat.

For Vodyanitsa in particular, allowing the Water Imp form to persist outside combat helps avoid the common disconnect where an important supernatural characteristic exists primarily in cutscenes.

Players will actually be able to travel as that version of the character.

Vodyanitsa and Vesna Lead Version 7.1's First Phase

Players interested in Vodyanitsa will not have long to wait.

Genshin Impact Version 7.1, officially titled “A Rekviem for the Underworld,” launches on September 23. Vodyanitsa and Vesna are scheduled for the first phase of the update's Event Wishes, while Skirk and Escoffier will return during the second phase.

The update is considerably larger than its new character banners.

Version 7.1 continues the Snezhnaya Archon Quest as the crisis surrounding the nation and the Heavenly Principles escalates. The Traveler is set to finally meet the Tsaritsa, with the story exploring the strategy behind her long-running effort to collect the Gnoses.

At the same time, Ronova, the Ruler of Death, becomes an increasingly immediate threat and is being introduced as a new Weekly Boss. Rhinedottir's involvement further complicates a conflict that is pushing the Snezhnaya storyline toward substantially higher stakes.

Away from Snezhnaya, Version 7.1 will also return players to Liyue for the Moonchase Festival, which comes back after a five-year absence and brings new activities and rewards.

HoYoverse is additionally tying significant anniversary rewards to the update, including 1,600 Primogems and 10 Intertwined Fates, alongside opportunities to obtain 5-star characters.

Tonight, the Stage Belongs to the Water Imp

Against an update filled with Archons, cosmic authorities, major battles and anniversary rewards, Vodyanitsa could easily have been presented primarily through what she contributes to a team.

Instead, HoYoverse has chosen to sell the character through something more personal.

Her recent promotional material has repeatedly returned to performance: why someone wants to sing, why art matters even when its motivations are ordinary, what remains when a culture's voices begin disappearing, and how a song can carry something that spoken words cannot.

“Tonight, We Sink as One” brings those ideas together immediately before Vodyanitsa enters the playable roster.

Her mechanics still matter. A Hydro Catalyst support capable of healing, resistance reduction, offensive amplification and Stellar Swirl support potentially gives players several reasons to consider her when Version 7.1 arrives.

But the trailer's strongest argument is much simpler.

Vodyanitsa is a Water Imp who sings — and for a few minutes, Genshin Impact is content to let the entire stage belong to her.
