Curse of the Dead Gods
27/07/2023 - 20:05Without giving us too many details about the game's story at the beginning, little by little we discover that our goal is to enter gloomy ancient temples full of treasures, traps, and enemies, where we will have to kill the deities that guard them. The path is not easy, as is usual in roguelikes, although in this case, it is not as complex as it happens to be in other similar games. It is less demanding as far as it goes.
From an isometric perspective, we have to go through the different rooms throughout the temple that are wrapped in shadows. This is why the protagonist’s torch becomes a completely essential object for two main reasons:
- Its most basic utility is to illuminate the path that, on many occasions, is full of traps that we would surely fall into if it were not for the light given off by the torch.
- Its usefulness when facing opponents is key since, on the one hand, it helps us to lighten up certain areas and, on the other, we must take into account that whenever we are in the dark, the damage inflicted by the enemies will increase. But of course, the problem is that when we carry the torch, we cannot use our main weapons. This creates a rather interesting dilemma when it comes to prioritizing our actions and movements.
This striking mechanic is joined by another equally transcendent one that has to do with the corruption that is consuming our protagonist. The more time he spends inside the rooms of the temple on duty, the more corruption contaminates the protagonist... until he becomes completely cursed and is penalized by worsening his features.
As we go through rooms, the protagonist suffers the consequences of the temple's curse... until a moment comes when he is consumed by it. And what happens then? A curse deteriorates the protagonist’s attributes, complicating things even more... but adding a very striking touch of freshness. Obviously, the issue of looting and improving the character's skills is also present. We have three spaces in the inventory to house different objects and weapons that we can obtain and choose as we wish. A fairly wide arsenal that combines perfectly with the remarkable combat system.
It is clear that several of the ideas that this production puts on the table are based on other similar games, but it is also true that it manages to retain a certain uniqueness and, most importantly, the enjoyment of gameplay, which makes the game very attractive.
