Wizard with a Gun is an explosive mix of genres and concepts: a roguelite with a touch of survival game, rounded up with magic bullets and fantasy-western aesthetics. Developed by Galvanic Games and published by Devolver Digital, this game offers an isometric adventure where you play as a wizard armed with enchanted bullets in a world that is crumbling due to an unstoppable temporal distortion.

The concept is as strange as it is brilliant: intense combat, crafting magic ammo, a central hub from which you can restore the world and a setting reminiscent of both the apocalypse and a twisted sorcery tale. And yes, you can play in co-op, which adds to the chaos and fun.

Gameplay: Armed wizards and quick decisions

The playable basis of Wizard with a Gun mixes twin-stick action with elements of strategy and survival. Each game starts from your tower in the Nexus, a temporary shelter located outside the real world, from where you launch expeditions to explore areas affected by chaos. The goal is to gather resources, defeat enemies and collect temporal fragments that allow you to progress and rebuild world structures.

The combat is dynamic and challenging. You can equip up to two guns, each with different types of magic ammunition that you make yourself: bullets with fire, ice, poison, lightning, explosives, and even crazier combinations like spiral fire bullets or poisonous bouncing projectiles. The variety is huge, and customizing your arsenal is a fundamental part of the experience.

But be careful — time works against you. Expeditions have a countdown, and if you spend too much time exploring, chaos breaks out and the enemies become much more aggressive. This mechanic adds tension and forces you to be efficient in every raid.

Progression: Rebuild the world and improve your arsenal

One of the most interesting systems of the game is the reconstruction of the world from your base. As you collect resources and temporal fragments, you restore areas of the map and unlock new biomes, enemies, magical recipes and upgrades. This constant cycle of going out-exploring-coming back-improving is perfectly adjusted to get you hooked without falling into a rut.

The upgrade tree includes new weapons, ammo recipes, equipment and passive spells. You can also expand your tower with workstations, portals, decorative zones and even magic automations that save you time when crafting. Although it is not a construction game as such, the customization component of the Nexus gives it a very satisfying touch.

In addition, the game includes a "reset travel" system, where you can reset parts of the world to obtain special resources in exchange for facing tougher conditions. This greatly extends the replayability without falling into simple repetition.

Level design and enemies: Nice variety and controlled chaos

The world of Wizard with a Gun is fragmented into different procedurally generated biomes. Each zone has its own enemies, environmental challenges and hidden secrets. You will go from poisonous swamps to magical deserts and distorted forests, with each one presenting enemies that require different approaches.

The enemies are varied and range from wild creatures to chaotic summons that distort the environment. Some attack directly, others generate chain effects that force you to move constantly, while minibosses add layers of strategy to the combat. The artificial intelligence is not particularly advanced, but the variety and design of the combats make up for it.

In addition, the physics system and the elemental effects can be combined to create chain reactions: you can, for example, freeze an area of water and then explode it with fire, or electrify wet enemies to maximize damage. These types of interactions lead to unpredictable and hilarious fights.

Aesthetics and setting: Between the charming and the apocalyptic

Visually, Wizard with a Gun stands out for its cel-shaded artistic style with cartoon touches, but rich in details. The color palette is full of magical tones, bright effects and deep shadows, which reinforce the contrast between the destruction of the world and the beauty of the arcane. The characters, especially the wizards, have a stylized design — sort of a mix between Nordic sorcerers and apocalyptic cowboys.

The design of the Nexus and the world zones reminds us of an interactive comic. Everything feels magical but broken, as if you were the last one with the ability to restore order to a fragmented universe.

The interface is clean, intuitive, and with decorative elements that reinforce the atmosphere. Although there are sometimes a lot of visual effects on the screen during combat, the game manages to maintain enough clarity so that you don't get lost.

Co-op mode: Shared chaos and magical synergies

One of the strongest points of the game is its online cooperative mode. You can play the entire campaign together with a friend, which not only adds to the chaos, but also allows you to develop unique synergies: one can focus on area control weapons while the other goes with direct damage, for example.

In addition, reviving mechanics and the combined effects of two players encourage team play. If one falls, the other can rescue them, but you can also use complementary skills to survive the toughest moments. The pace is frantic, but well balanced.

Sound and music: Spells with a rhythm

The soundtrack is as peculiar as the game itself. It mixes western sounds with magic synthesizers and tribal percussion. The musical themes are adapted to combat and moments of calmness, perfectly accompanying the fantastic-apocalyptic setting.

The sound effects also stand out: each type of ammunition has a unique sound, weapons rumble with magical force, and enemies emit distorted growls that help identify danger. Everything reinforces the immersion and dynamics of the game.

Conclusion: Trigger magic in a world falling apart

Wizard with a Gun is one of those surprises that only Devolver Digital could come up with. It combines frenetic action, deep crafting, constant progression and a charming visual style, wrapped up together into a game that does not look to reinvent the wheel, but offers charisma and solidity in every detail. Its mix of genres works almost magically, and both modes: solo and co-op, offer an addictive and replayable experience.

If you like roguelites, strange worlds and sharp magic, this game will leave you enchanted... and armed to the teeth.
