"Do you crave endless life?”

With that unsettling question begins the brand-new gameplay trailer for Marathon Season 2—an update that not only expands the content of Bungie’s extraction shooter but completely redefines some of its core systems. Fresh zones, a revamped progression system, an unreleased Runner, and a much darker atmosphere mark the kickoff of a season aiming to bring the feeling of discovery and constant danger back to the planet Tau Ceti IV.

Following a premiere season focused on establishing the game's foundation, Bungie is now betting on a more unpredictable, more tactical, and considerably more oppressive experience.

Night reshapes dire marsh entirely

The headline feature of the season is Night Marsh, a brand-new night-time version of Dire Marsh that radically alters how the game is played.

If the original zone was already one of the map's most treacherous areas due to its long sightlines and long-range engagements, the arrival of darkness converts every deployment into something closer to a survival horror experience.

Large portions of the area are cast into near-total darkness. Visual landmarks vanish, the anomaly warps the environment, and players must rely on new tools to navigate.

Key equipment includes:

  • Integrated flashlights on Runner Shells.
  • Signaling flares.
  • Darksight visors.
  • New specialized equipment tailored for night-time operations.

However, illuminating your surroundings comes with a glaring risk: any light source can instantly give away your position to enemy players.

Sentinel arrives to control the battlefield

Season 2 also expands the roster with Sentinel, a new Runner designed for players who prefer territorial control and defensive gameplay.

Unlike more aggressive characters, Sentinel excels at carving out safe zones and punishing opponents who push ahead without a plan.

Its kit includes:

  • Defender System, a defensive platform capable of intercepting incoming enemy grenades and projectiles.
  • Snare Mine, a mine that immobilizes rivals caught within its blast radius.
  • Prey Tracker, a motion-detection system.
  • Castle Doctrine, a passive trait focused on resisting explosive damage and boosting performance in close-quarters combat.

With this addition, Bungie aims to broaden the tactical variety of squads and offer new ways to handle high-stakes extraction encounters.

The cradle system reworks character progression

Perhaps the most significant long-term change is the arrival of The Cradle.

This new system allows players to develop and customize the evolution of WEAVEworms—the organisms responsible for generating the biomechanical bodies of the Runners. In practical terms, this translates into a much more flexible progression system, allowing players to specialize characters according to distinct playstyles.

The philosophy here is to let players build highly customized configurations with each passing season, rather than forcing them to rely exclusively on the gear extracted during deployments.

New weapons, gear, and meta adjustments

As is typical with the launch of a new season, Bungie has executed a sweeping balance pass.

Standout changes include:

  • New weapons like the KKV SMG and the D54 Battle Pistol.
  • The removal of several overly dominant Season 1 builds.
  • Adjustments to shotguns and thermal sniper rifles.
  • New ice mines.
  • Vector grenades.
  • Expanded customization options for weapons and gear.

The overarching goal is to foster greater build diversity and prevent a handful of configurations from dominating competitive play.

A free week to draw in new players

Coinciding with the season's launch, Bungie has activated an Open Play Week.

From now until June 9, anyone can download and test Marathon for free on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with complete access to all available content. Furthermore, all progress made during this week will carry over if players choose to purchase the game later.

The initiative aims to recruit new users at the perfect time, right as the seasonal reset flattens much of the gameplay progression, offering an experience very close to a completely fresh start.

The season that could define Marathon's future

Beyond the new maps and systems, Season 2 carries a heavy responsibility.

Marathon remains one of Bungie's most ambitious projects outside of Destiny, and this update represents a golden opportunity to prove that the game can evolve far beyond the foundations laid at launch.

The combination of Night Marsh, Sentinel, The Cradle, and the new progression loops points precisely in that direction.

Because the question posed by the trailer doesn't just seem to refer to the immortality of the Runners.

It also feels like it's addressing the very future of Marathon itself.

And Bungie wants to prove that this journey on Tau Ceti IV has only just begun.
