Bungie has officially kicked off Season 2 of Marathon, an update that seeks to redefine the extraction shooter experience with new zones, revamped progression, expanded tactical options, and a much darker atmosphere. Under the motto "Carve a new path through Tau Ceti IV," the studio invites players to start from scratch in a season that introduces some of the deepest changes since the game's launch.

Far from limiting itself to merely adding content, Bungie has leveraged this new cycle to overhaul core systems and offer a more varied experience for both veterans and newcomers alike.

Night Marsh transforms Marathon into a survival horror experience

The undisputed highlight of the season is Night Marsh, a brand-new night-time version of Dire Marsh that radically shifts the pacing of deployments.

Darkness dominates a massive portion of the map, choking visibility and forcing players to rethink every single movement. Regular routes are no longer safe, visual landmarks completely vanish, and new threats emerge from the shadows. Bungie describes this zone as an experience that leans significantly closer to survival horror than the game's traditional matches.

To survive, Runners will have access to new tools such as integrated flashlights, signaling flares, Darksight visors, and specialized ammunition capable of illuminating areas of the environment. The catch, however, is that any light source can instantly betray your position to rival players.

Sentinel arrives to dominate the battlefield

Season 2 also expands the roster with a new Runner: Sentinel.

Unlike more aggressive characters, Sentinel is designed to control spaces, protect the squad, and punish enemies who attempt to push forward without a game plan. Its kit features defensive systems capable of intercepting projectiles, immobilizing snare mines, and detection utilities perfect for setting up ambushes or securing strategic zones.

With this addition, Bungie aims to broaden the game's tactical diversity and offer deeper options for players who prefer defensive or support-oriented playstyles.

The Cradle completely overhauls progression

Another major structural change is the arrival of The Cradle, a new progression system that replaces part of the traditional character growth loops.

Players can now upgrade their WEAVEworms—the organisms responsible for generating the biomechanical bodies of the Runners—by allocating points into different stats and unlocking specific perks to tune each character to a precise playstyle.

Progression is earned by recycling gear and resources extracted during deployments, allowing for much more personalized configurations than in previous seasons. Bungie has pointed out that the goal is to encourage experimentation and ensure that every seasonal cycle feels distinct.

New weapons, fresh modes, and further experimentation

The update also introduces new weapons, balance passes, and several experimental playlist queues.

Standout among these is Sponsored Survival, a new PvP-lite mode focused primarily on exploration and PvE combat against AI-controlled enemies, though with the lingering possibility of other players showing up later in the match. Bungie has also confirmed that it is actively working on more robust, fully fledged PvE experiences slated for later this same season.

Furthermore, testing continues for Duos queues and new game formats designed to expand options beyond traditional extraction drops.

A fresh start for all players

Season 2 also marks the first major seasonal reset for Marathon.

Bungie has wiped a large portion of gear and resource progression so that all players can take their first steps on an even playing field. While cosmetics, achievements, and permanent milestones are preserved, player arsenals are essentially starting back from scratch.

To coincide with the launch, the studio has activated a Free Week allowing anyone to download and play the full game across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S through June 9.

The season that could define Marathon’s future

Beyond the fresh content drops, Season 2 stands as a clear statement of intent from Bungie.

Night Marsh, Sentinel, and The Cradle are not simple additions. They are calculated overhauls designed to expand the horizon of what Marathon can be and prove that the game is capable of evolving far beyond the foundations laid at launch.

The question posed by the season is no longer just how to survive on Tau Ceti IV.

It is now about what path you are willing to carve when the darkness covers everything..
