Marvel Rivals is preparing to place the gods themselves on the endangered list. Season 10: Butcher’s Blasphemy launches on September 11, 2026, bringing Gorr the God Butcher into the playable roster and continuing the conflict established during The Mystery of Thebes.

Armed with All-Black the Necrosword, Gorr has turned his attention towards Yggsgard after attacking the would-be gods of Thebes. His objective is considerably more ambitious than conquering another kingdom: Gorr intends to assemble the God Bomb and erase every divine being from existence.

Standing between the God Butcher and his target are Loki, the current King of Yggsgard, and Thor, whose arrival is signalled by the unmistakable sound of thunder. Their confrontation establishes one of Marvel Rivals’ darkest seasonal storylines so far, while giving NetEase Games a natural way to introduce one of Thor’s most dangerous enemies as a new Duelist.

The Mystery of Thebes Leads Directly to Yggsgard

Butcher’s Blasphemy is not presented as an isolated story. Gorr’s campaign begins after the events surrounding Thebes, the setting at the centre of Marvel Rivals Season 9.

The would-be gods ruling that realm have already experienced the power of All-Black, but Gorr considers them only one part of a much larger problem. He believes the existence of gods prevents mortals from trusting their own strength, leaving entire civilisations dependent on prayers and promises that may never be answered.

Gorr’s solution is absolute. Rather than replacing the gods or attempting to seize their authority, he wants to eliminate divinity itself. In his view, mortals will only become genuinely free when there is nobody left for them to worship.

That philosophy gives the seasonal conflict more weight than a conventional invasion. Gorr is not attacking Yggsgard simply because it is a powerful kingdom. As a realm built around Asgardian gods, divine authority and mythological power, it represents everything he wants to destroy.

The return to Yggsgard also reconnects the seasonal story with one of Marvel Rivals’ most important original locations. Players have fought across the realm since the game’s early seasons, but Gorr’s arrival changes its narrative position. It is no longer merely another front in the wider Chronoverse conflict; it has become the primary target of a weapon designed to exterminate gods.

The God Bomb Raises the Stakes Beyond One Kingdom

Gorr’s plan revolves around the construction of the God Bomb, a weapon capable of turning his personal crusade into a mass extinction event for divine beings.

The concept has deep roots in Marvel Comics. Gorr was originally created by writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribić for Thor: God of Thunder, where his campaign unfolded across different periods of Thor’s life. The God Bomb represented the culmination of that storyline: a weapon intended to kill every god across time.

Marvel Rivals is adapting that central idea into its own Chronoverse continuity. The game does not need to reproduce the comic storyline exactly because its seasonal narrative already combines characters, locations and events from different realities. However, retaining the God Bomb gives this version of Gorr the scale and ambition associated with his comic-book counterpart.

It also separates the storyline from Gorr’s appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder. The Marvel Cinematic Universe version shared his hatred of gods and wielded a Necrosword, but its final conflict revolved around reaching Eternity. Butcher’s Blasphemy instead leans more directly into the comic-book concept of building a dedicated weapon of divine annihilation.

The result is a threat that extends far beyond Thor and Loki. If the God Bomb works as Gorr intends, every divine character within the Chronoverse could potentially become a target.

Loki and Thor Defend the Heavens

Loki occupies a particularly important position in the conflict because Marvel Rivals has established him as the King of Yggsgard. Whatever schemes or personal ambitions he may possess, Gorr’s arrival threatens both his kingdom and his continued existence.

Thor is the more obvious opponent. Gorr was originally created as one of the God of Thunder’s defining modern adversaries, and their rivalry is central to the character’s identity. Placing Thor in the defence of Yggsgard allows Marvel Rivals to draw on that history without abandoning its own continuity.

The official description presents the approaching thunder as the final obstacle in Gorr’s path. That framing suggests the fight will not simply be between a new villain and a group of interchangeable heroes. It is a personal confrontation between someone who considers the gods a cosmic injustice and one of Marvel’s most recognisable divine champions.

NetEase has not provided a complete written resolution to the confrontation. Consequently, any apparent deaths, transformations or changes to Yggsgard shown through promotional material should not automatically be treated as permanent alterations to the playable roster.

Marvel Rivals frequently advances its story through seasonal cinematics while keeping the full character lineup available during matches. Narrative defeat does not necessarily mean that a hero will be removed or disabled in gameplay.

Gorr Joins the Roster as a Duelist

Gorr will enter Marvel Rivals as a Duelist, making him an offensive character designed to pressure enemies and convert successful attacks into greater momentum.

His central weapon is All-Black the Necrosword, a shape-shifting blade capable of forming different weapons and dark constructs. Developer information indicates that Gorr can transform defeated enemies into Black Berserkers, creating additional attackers that fight alongside him.

This mechanic gives him a potential snowball structure. Securing a takedown does more than remove an opponent temporarily: it can also increase Gorr’s offensive presence and place further pressure on the surviving enemy team.

The effectiveness of that mechanic will depend on several factors that require live testing, including the Berserkers’ durability, targeting behaviour, damage and duration. Those values will determine whether they function as a constant threat, a temporary distraction or a situational reward for already winning a team fight.

Gorr can also use Symbiote Assimilation to reposition himself. This should provide the mobility required to close distances, reach vulnerable backline targets or escape after an aggressive engagement. That movement option is especially important for a Duelist whose primary identity appears to involve close-range pressure.

His Ultimate transforms All-Black into the Annihilablade and coordinates an attack involving his active Black Berserkers. If several constructs are present, the ability could become substantially more dangerous, encouraging players to build momentum before committing their Ultimate.

Exact damage values, cooldowns and competitive interactions should be judged from the official hero breakdown and live build rather than the cinematic trailer. The trailer establishes Gorr’s identity and power, but it is not a reliable source for measuring gameplay balance.

All-Black Is More Than a Conventional Sword

All-Black gives NetEase considerable freedom when designing Gorr’s animations and abilities. In Marvel Comics, the Necrosword is a living weapon connected to Knull and the wider mythology of the symbiotes. It can change shape, generate weapons and create an army of shadowy Berserkers.

That flexibility explains why Gorr is not restricted to basic sword attacks in Marvel Rivals. His visual design can move between blades, scythes, tendrils and dark constructs while remaining faithful to the fundamental concept of the character.

It also creates potential connections with existing symbiote characters such as Venom. NetEase has not confirmed a Gorr and Venom Team-Up ability in the initial information, so one should not be assumed. Nevertheless, All-Black’s comic history gives the developers a credible foundation for exploring that relationship in future updates.

From a gameplay perspective, the weapon helps distinguish Gorr from other melee-focused Duelists. The combination of summoned attackers, weapon transformations and symbiote-based movement suggests a character built around adaptable aggression rather than a single repeated combo.

God Quarry Extends the Seasonal Story

The God Bomb storyline will eventually lead players to God Quarry, a new Domination map scheduled to arrive on September 24.

Described as a graveyard of gods, the location is directly connected to Gorr’s plan. He intends to bring the Faith-Harvesting Engine to the quarry as part of his attempt to complete the God Bomb. The seasonal battlefield therefore functions as an actual destination in the story rather than an unrelated arena released alongside the new character.

Its Domination format means teams will compete to control designated areas across multiple sections of the environment. NetEase has not yet published every tactical detail in the initial trailer announcement, so questions about sightlines, destructible elements, flanking routes and environmental mechanics remain open.

Linking the map to the central conflict is still an effective structural decision. Players will first encounter Gorr when Season 10 begins and later move into the location associated with his larger objective. That staggered rollout allows the story to continue developing after launch day.

Season 10 Changes the Usual Hero Schedule

Gorr is expected to be the only new playable hero introduced during Season 10. Marvel Rivals has commonly added another character during its mid-season update, but NetEase is changing that structure temporarily.

Instead of introducing a second hero in Season 10.5, the development team is directing additional resources towards new Path to Doomsday activities. These are expected to include modes inspired by major conflicts from Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

The regular two-character structure is currently expected to return with Season 11. This makes Butcher’s Blasphemy an exception rather than confirmation of a permanent reduction in the game’s character-release cadence.

For players primarily interested in new heroes, the change may make Season 10.5 appear lighter. From a balancing and production perspective, however, slowing the character schedule for one season may give the team more room to work on modes, system changes and the existing roster.

Whether that trade-off is successful will depend on the quality and longevity of the Path to Doomsday content.

A Darker Battle for the Marvel Rivals Chronoverse

The Butcher’s Blasphemy trailer establishes a clear conflict: Gorr has arrived with a defined ideology, a weapon capable of killing gods and a plan that threatens more than a single corner of the Chronoverse.

His campaign against Yggsgard builds naturally from The Mystery of Thebes while bringing Thor and Loki directly into the centre of the story. More importantly, Gorr’s role as a playable Duelist translates his comic identity into actual mechanics through All-Black, Black Berserkers and an Ultimate designed to reward accumulated pressure.

Season 10 begins on September 11, with the God Quarry map following on September 24. The complete balance implications will not be clear until Gorr reaches live matches, but his arrival already gives Marvel Rivals one of its most dangerous seasonal antagonists.

Gorr is not coming to rule the gods. He is coming to prove that the universe no longer needs them.
