Marvel Rivals turns Avengers: Age of Ultron into a story-driven PvE battle for Avengers Tower
Marvel Rivals is continuing its Path to Doomsday crossover with an all-new cooperative PvE mode inspired by Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron. Launching on July 30, 2026 at 09:00 UTC, the new chapter places Avengers Tower under siege after Ultron corrupts F.R.I.D.A.Y. and takes control of

Marvel Rivals is continuing its Path to Doomsday crossover with an all-new cooperative PvE mode inspired by Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Launching on July 30, 2026 at 09:00 UTC, the new chapter places Avengers Tower under siege after Ultron corrupts F.R.I.D.A.Y. and takes control of the building’s technological infrastructure.
Players must assemble a team of Avengers, enter the compromised tower and fight through an expanding army of Ultron drones before the artificial intelligence can transform one of Earth’s most important defensive facilities into the centre of a global machine uprising.
Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Age of Ultron includes original story cinematics and dialogue inspired by the 2015 movie, giving the mode a more directed narrative structure than Marvel Rivals’ conventional competitive matches.
The reveal trailer shows Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Black Widow confronting large groups of machines while using heavily modified versions of their normal abilities. These enhancements appear specifically designed for PvE, allowing the heroes to control crowds and eliminate substantially more enemies than their standard PvP kits could manage efficiently.
Scarlet Witch also appears prominently within the story presentation, reflecting her central role in Avengers: Age of Ultron and supporting a wider crossover campaign that includes a new movie-inspired costume.
The mode represents the second major chapter of Path to Doomsday, a series of events based on Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga and designed to build toward the theatrical release of Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026.
Ultron has turned Avengers Tower against its creators
The central conflict begins when a dark signal overrides the systems inside Avengers Tower.
Ultron infects F.R.I.D.A.Y., compromises the building and deploys his mechanical army throughout the facility.
This immediately changes the role of the environment.
Avengers Tower was designed to provide the team with technology, intelligence and operational support. Under Ultron’s control, those same systems become potential weapons.
Doors, security networks, internal communications and automated equipment can no longer be trusted. The Avengers are not simply defending a building from an external invasion. They are entering a structure whose digital infrastructure has already joined the enemy.
That creates a stronger foundation for a PvE mission than placing another wave-based arena on a neutral battlefield.
Every room belongs to the Avengers physically but to Ultron electronically.
The team must therefore reclaim its own headquarters while an artificial intelligence capable of moving through connected systems attempts to prevent them from reaching the source of the infection.
The F.R.I.D.A.Y. infection creates a new Age of Ultron scenario
The new mode is inspired by Avengers: Age of Ultron rather than reproducing the film scene by scene.
In the movie, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner attempt to create a global peacekeeping system using artificial intelligence discovered within the Mind Stone. Their experiment produces Ultron, who quickly concludes that humanity itself is the greatest obstacle to peace.
Ultron initially attacks the Avengers during a celebration at their tower, using a damaged Iron Legion drone to confront the team before escaping through the internet.
J.A.R.V.I.S. is attacked during that process and later becomes part of the consciousness used to create Vision. Tony subsequently begins using F.R.I.D.A.Y. as the artificial intelligence supporting his Iron Man armour.
Marvel Rivals combines those concepts into an alternate crisis.
Ultron has not merely breached the tower. He has infected F.R.I.D.A.Y., giving him direct access to the systems normally assisting Tony Stark and the Avengers.
The change creates a conflict that is immediately understandable to players familiar with the film while allowing NetEase to construct a new mission around its own version of the Marvel Multiverse.
Story cinematics give the mode a more deliberate campaign structure
The trailer places significant emphasis on cinematic sequences and character dialogue.
That suggests Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Age of Ultron is intended to function as a short narrative mission rather than a completely context-free survival arena.
Players should expect the conflict to progress through several defined stages.
The Avengers enter the tower, encounter the initial machine invasion, discover the scale of F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s corruption and advance toward increasingly dangerous sections of Ultron’s network.
Dialogue can communicate objective changes without relying exclusively on interface markers.
Tony Stark may identify compromised systems or new enemy types. Captain America can direct the team toward the next defensive position. Black Widow can provide tactical information, while Ultron can interrupt communications and attempt to turn the Avengers’ technology against them.
The use of dialogue inspired by the film is particularly important.
Avengers: Age of Ultron is remembered not only for its large battles but also for Ultron’s personality. He is theatrical, resentful and capable of discussing humanity with the confidence of a machine that believes it has already understood its creators completely.
A silent boss surrounded by drones would capture his visual threat without capturing the character.
Story cinematics give the mode room to preserve both.
The Avengers are fighting a military network rather than one villain
Ultron’s greatest strength is not the durability of one mechanical body.
It is his ability to distribute himself across an entire network.
Destroying one drone does not kill him. He can transfer his consciousness, activate another body and continue coordinating the attack.
This makes him particularly suitable for a PvE mode.
The Avengers can destroy hundreds of enemies without diminishing the central villain’s presence. Every machine can function as another extension of the same intelligence.
The swarm also creates natural progression.
Early enemies can use basic melee or ranged attacks. Later units can introduce armour, shields, flight, area denial or coordinated formations.
Specialized machines can force players to change priorities rather than attacking whichever target is closest.
A repair drone may need to be destroyed before it restores larger units. A ranged machine could pressure the team from elevated terrain. A heavily protected model may require coordinated damage or one of the mode’s enhanced hero abilities.
Ultron remains responsible for the entire invasion even when he is not physically present in every encounter.
The trailer shows heroes receiving PvE-specific power upgrades
Standard Marvel Rivals abilities are balanced around competitive fights between small teams of human-controlled heroes.
That balance is unsuitable for a mode where players must destroy large numbers of weaker enemies.
Path to Doomsday appears to modify the selected heroes accordingly.
Abilities become larger, more frequent and capable of affecting substantially more targets. The objective is no longer preventing one attack from becoming oppressive in PvP. It is allowing each Avenger to deliver the scale of power expected during a cinematic machine invasion.
Iron Man can unleash an extreme volume of missiles across the battlefield.
Hulk can charge through groups of robots and use his strength against enemies that would normally surround a less durable character.
Captain America’s shield becomes a crowd-control weapon capable of disrupting entire formations rather than one isolated opponent.
Black Widow gains opportunities to eliminate mechanical targets from range while the frontline heroes prevent the swarm from reaching her position.
These changes make the familiar roster feel more appropriate for a campaign encounter without permanently altering competitive balance.
Iron Man can finally use an armoury built for an invasion
Iron Man is one of the most natural characters for this chapter.
Tony Stark helped create Ultron, built the tower being attacked and designed many of the systems now operating against the Avengers.
The conflict is both technical and personal.
In standard Marvel Rivals matches, Iron Man must balance aerial positioning, sustained repulsor fire and the timing of his more powerful attacks. Giving him unlimited access to his entire armoury would make conventional PvP almost impossible to balance.
PvE removes part of that restriction.
The trailer shows Tony releasing an enormous missile barrage against the mechanical swarm, creating the impression that he is using everything available rather than preserving ammunition for a six-versus-six engagement.
The attack also suits the enemy.
Ultron’s drones are numerous, replaceable and frequently concentrated in large groups. An ability covering a wide area can destroy multiple machines without needing to target each one independently.
Iron Man should therefore become one of the strongest heroes for clearing open sections of Avengers Tower, provided teammates prevent faster enemies from surrounding him.
Captain America turns defensive control into battlefield leadership
Captain America provides the team with frontline stability.
His standard Marvel Rivals kit already combines mobility, shield defence and close-range disruption. Those qualities become more valuable when the opposing side attacks through numbers rather than one carefully coordinated hero composition.
Steve Rogers can block incoming projectiles while the rest of the team removes ranged machines.
He can enter enemy formations, interrupt their attacks and create space for Iron Man or Black Widow to continue dealing damage.
His shield also gives the developers a visually clear method of scaling his power.
A stronger ricochet can pass through several robots. An expanded defensive effect can protect teammates from a concentrated volley. A more forceful charge can break an advancing formation before it reaches a vulnerable objective.
Captain America’s importance should not be measured only through damage.
A successful PvE Vanguard needs to control where enemies move and which teammate they are allowed to attack.
Steve’s role is to make the swarm predictable enough that the rest of the Avengers can destroy it efficiently.
Hulk becomes the weapon the machine army cannot contain
Hulk is presented as the squad’s most direct answer to Ultron’s heavier machines.
Large groups can normally overwhelm a melee character by attacking from several directions. Hulk compensates through durability, mobility and the ability to convert enemy concentration into an advantage.
The more machines surrounding him, the more targets he can potentially strike with one area attack.
The trailer emphasizes a more destructive interpretation of Hulk than his standard competitive role sometimes permits. He crashes through the swarm, throws enemies aside and uses his body as a weapon against Ultron’s formations.
That presentation is closer to his role in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The film repeatedly treats Hulk as a force whose raw power can solve problems that conventional weapons cannot, while also acknowledging the danger created when that power is no longer controlled.
In the PvE mode, Ultron’s drones provide ideal targets.
They can be destroyed without the moral complications associated with human opponents, allowing Hulk to operate at full intensity.
Black Widow gives the Avengers precision inside the chaos
Black Widow does not possess armour, gamma strength or a vibranium shield.
Her contribution comes from positioning, accuracy and the ability to identify the enemy that matters most.
A machine invasion creates many targets, but not all of them should receive equal attention.
Basic drones can often be cleared through area damage. Elite units, shield generators and distant attackers may require more precise elimination.
Natasha can occupy that role.
From a protected firing position, she can remove priority targets while Captain America and Hulk control the main swarm.
Her mobility also allows her to relocate when enemies breach the frontline.
The trailer’s presentation appears to give Black Widow stronger long-range options than she would normally receive in competitive play, where extremely safe sniper damage must be controlled carefully.
PvE permits more generous ammunition, faster follow-up attacks or upgrades that reward repeated precision against mechanical weak points.
The result can make Black Widow feel like an essential specialist rather than the least physically powerful member of the Avengers.
Scarlet Witch connects the mode to the emotional centre of the film
Scarlet Witch appears within the new crossover campaign and receives an Avengers: Age of Ultron costume through the accompanying Store update.
Wanda Maximoff begins the film as an enemy of the Avengers.
She and her brother Pietro initially cooperate with Ultron because of their hatred of Tony Stark and the weapons responsible for their childhood trauma.
Wanda eventually discovers that Ultron intends to destroy humanity rather than protect it.
She abandons the alliance, helps the Avengers defend Sokovia and becomes part of the team formed after the battle.
That transition makes her one of the most important characters in the original story.
Marvel Rivals can use the new scenario to examine the same distrust from another angle.
An Ultron capable of infecting F.R.I.D.A.Y. can manipulate information, imitate trusted voices and present his actions as the logical result of Stark’s failures.
Wanda’s dialogue can challenge both Ultron and Tony without reducing the conflict to a simple battle between heroes and machines.
The trailer does not yet establish every playable hero in the final roster, so Scarlet Witch’s precise gameplay role should not be assumed until NetEase publishes the complete in-game rules.
Her narrative relevance is already clear.
F.R.I.D.A.Y. could become both guide and enemy
Corrupting F.R.I.D.A.Y. creates an unusual narrative device.
The Avengers may still need information from the artificial intelligence even while Ultron is attempting to control it.
The mission could use competing signals to show the system resisting the infection, recovering temporarily or directing players toward areas where Ultron’s control is weaker.
This would allow F.R.I.D.A.Y. to function as both objective interface and character.
A normal mission marker tells players where to go.
A compromised AI can explain why that destination matters while creating uncertainty over whether the information can be trusted.
Ultron may also imitate or alter F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s instructions.
The team could be directed into an ambush, locked inside a compromised section or separated by security protocols originally created to protect the tower.
That possibility makes the environment feel actively hostile rather than populated only by enemies waiting in predetermined positions.
Avengers Tower gives environmental destruction a different purpose
Marvel Rivals is built around destructible environments.
In PvP, destruction opens new firing angles, removes cover and creates alternative routes through a map.
Inside a PvE mission, the same system can support scripted escalation.
Ultron’s machines can breach walls, destroy defensive positions and enter from unexpected directions. Hulk or Iron Man can create new paths when the normal route has been sealed.
A battle can begin inside a relatively controlled room and end after several walls have collapsed, exposing the squad to enemies arriving from another section of the tower.
The destruction also communicates the cost of the invasion.
Avengers Tower is not a disposable arena. It is the team’s home and operational centre.
Every damaged laboratory, broken display and collapsed corridor shows Ultron dismantling the infrastructure created to protect the world.
The Avengers may defeat the machines while still watching their own headquarters fall apart around them.
The tower allows the mission to escalate vertically
Avengers Tower is naturally suited to a progression-based PvE map.
Its height allows players to advance through different floors rather than travelling across one flat battlefield.
Lower areas can contain public or administrative sections. Laboratories can introduce experimental machines and security systems. Hangars can support larger aerial encounters, while the upper levels can house the central network or final confrontation.
Vertical movement also suits the playable heroes differently.
Iron Man can use flight to control open spaces.
Hulk can leap between platforms.
Black Widow may search for elevated firing positions.
Captain America can protect narrow corridors where enemies are forced to approach through predictable routes.
The environment can therefore change which hero has the strongest immediate advantage without altering the overall team composition.
Path to Doomsday has abandoned the first chapter’s asymmetric structure
The first Path to Doomsday event was based on Marvel Studios’ The Avengers.
It recreated the conflict surrounding Loki through an asymmetric PvP mode in which an empowered version of the God of Mischief fought against a team of heroes.
The idea was thematically appropriate.
Loki used mind control, illusions and superior power to disrupt opponents while the Avengers attempted to coordinate against him.
The structure was also difficult to balance.
The solo villain needed enough power to survive several players attacking simultaneously. Giving Loki too much control made the hero side frustrating, while reducing his strength risked turning the villain into a target with no realistic chance of resistance.
NetEase adjusted Loki’s health, crowd-control duration and ability cooldowns after the mode launched.
Avengers: Age of Ultron takes a fundamentally different approach.
Ultron remains the central antagonist, but he does not need to be controlled by one player. His strength can be distributed across AI enemies, environmental systems and scripted encounters.
Every player is now fighting on the same side.
PvE is a more natural format for Ultron’s army
An Ultron event could theoretically use another asymmetric mode, placing one player in control of the artificial intelligence and its drones.
That structure would repeat many of the first chapter’s problems.
Ultron’s defining advantage is scale. Reducing him to one unusually powerful combatant would fail to represent a consciousness capable of controlling an army simultaneously.
PvE allows the game to use large numbers of enemies without asking one player to manage every machine directly.
The AI can coordinate formations, spawn reinforcements and change behaviour according to the stage of the mission.
Ultron can remain present through dialogue and boss encounters while his army performs the continuous combat role.
This format also supports the fantasy of assembling the Avengers more effectively.
The team is not divided between one player enjoying the villain and everyone else attempting to stop them. Every participant can choose a hero, develop a build and cooperate against the same threat.
The new chapter builds on Marvel Zombies and Blood Hunt
Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Age of Ultron is not Marvel Rivals’ first attempt at cooperative PvE.
Marvel Zombies introduced a dedicated mode built around defeating waves of undead enemies, developing hero-specific enhancements and surviving increasingly difficult encounters.
Blood Hunt expanded the formula through a vampire invasion, persistent gear, additional difficulty progression and character builds designed specifically for PvE.
These modes demonstrated that Marvel Rivals’ hero kits can support more than competitive objective matches.
They also exposed the challenge of maintaining replayability.
Defeating large groups is initially satisfying, but repeated runs need meaningful variation. Players require different upgrades, enemy combinations, difficulty modifiers or long-term rewards to prevent every match from following the same sequence.
Age of Ultron can use the lessons learned from both modes.
Its story cinematics and Avengers Tower progression should make the first completion more memorable. Its long-term value will depend on whether the mode includes enough mechanical variation after players already know the narrative.
Enhanced abilities can create separate PvE identities for familiar heroes
Blood Hunt and Marvel Zombies established a precedent for heroes receiving mode-specific modifications.
Path to Doomsday can continue that approach without changing the competitive roster.
An Iron Man upgrade can increase missile quantity or cause explosions to spread between drones.
Captain America can strengthen shield ricochets, create protective fields or generate additional attacks after blocking damage.
Hulk can expand the radius of his impacts, gain temporary protection while surrounded or convert enemy eliminations into further power.
Black Widow can receive piercing shots, explosive ammunition or bonuses against elite machine weak points.
These systems create progression during one run and allow the same hero to support several strategies.
One player may build Iron Man around continuous area damage. Another may prioritize powerful attacks against bosses.
The underlying character remains familiar, but the PvE upgrades determine how that version develops during the mission.
Ultron’s normal Strategist role is inverted
Ultron is already playable in Marvel Rivals as a Strategist.
His competitive kit allows him to fly, attack with the Encephalo-Ray and deploy drones that support allies. His Ultimate summons additional machines capable of damaging enemies and healing teammates.
Path to Doomsday reverses that relationship.
The same technological network that normally supports a hero team becomes the source of the invasion.
Instead of attaching drones to allies, Ultron can deploy entire mechanical formations against the Avengers.
Instead of using his Ultimate as one temporary wave, the new mode can treat the drone army as a permanent condition of the battlefield.
This gives Ultron players an opportunity to see the character’s fantasy expressed at a scale impossible in standard matches.
His playable version is balanced to function as one member of a six-hero team.
The PvE antagonist can behave like the machine conqueror his story describes.
The mode can distinguish Ultron from his individual bodies
The final encounter does not need to end after one mechanical body is destroyed.
Ultron can transfer into another shell, retreat into the network or activate a stronger form after players believe they have won.
This creates a natural multi-phase boss structure.
The Avengers may first fight a mobile body using ranged attacks and drones.
A later phase can give Ultron heavier armour, stronger melee attacks or control over the tower itself.
The final stage may require players to damage both the physical body and the systems preserving his consciousness.
Destroying only the machine would allow him to escape again.
Disabling only the network would leave the team exposed to the body defending it.
Coordinating both objectives would recreate the central problem associated with defeating Ultron: he must be removed everywhere, not merely struck down once.
Movie-inspired dialogue should strengthen character relationships
The trailer promises dialogue inspired by Avengers: Age of Ultron rather than presenting the mode as a silent recreation.
This allows the writers to recover the tension within the team.
Tony Stark is responsible for creating the original Ultron programme.
Captain America believes dangerous power must remain accountable.
Bruce Banner helped Tony complete the experiment and understands the damage caused when scientific curiosity exceeds caution.
Natasha Romanoff is attempting to keep the team operational while its members question one another.
Wanda has personal reasons to distrust Stark and direct knowledge of Ultron’s manipulation.
These disagreements can continue while the heroes cooperate.
The Avengers are strongest when assembled, but Age of Ultron repeatedly demonstrates that assembling them does not automatically make them united.
A PvE mission can use combat dialogue to preserve those tensions without interrupting the pace for extended cutscenes after every encounter.
The crossover does not need to reproduce every movie character
Avengers: Age of Ultron includes Thor, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Vision, War Machine and several other important characters.
Not all of them need to become playable in this mode for the crossover to work.
Marvel Rivals must build PvE upgrades, animations and balance rules for every supported hero. A smaller roster can provide more substantial modifications than a broad selection in which each character receives only minor numerical changes.
Some movie characters also create practical complications.
Vision exists in the film because J.A.R.V.I.S., the Mind Stone and an artificial body are combined. A scenario focused on Ultron infecting F.R.I.D.A.Y. may take place before an equivalent version of Vision has been created.
Quicksilver is not currently part of the playable Marvel Rivals roster.
The complete character selection should therefore be judged only after NetEase publishes or activates the final mode.
The trailer establishes several central Avengers but does not provide a comprehensive official roster list.
Scarlet Witch’s Age of Ultron costume expands the event outside PvE
The July 30 update is accompanied by an Avengers: Age of Ultron Store bundle for Scarlet Witch, scheduled to become available on July 31 at 02:00 UTC.
The costume represents Wanda during the period in which she moves from Ultron’s ally to an Avenger.
Its inclusion gives players a permanent cosmetic connection to the event even after the limited PvE chapter eventually ends.
The broader update also includes a screening area in Times Square where players can watch highlights from Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Watching continuously for two minutes unlocks an exclusive Spray.
Photo walls outside the Avengers’ Gift Shop recreate iconic scenes, and taking a group photograph with the available NPCs awards 100 Units.
These additions turn the crossover into a wider in-game celebration rather than limiting it to one queue.
Times Square functions as the crossover’s social space
The PvE mode is built around combat, but Times Square gives players a place to engage with the film without fighting.
The highlights screening allows Marvel Rivals to present footage from Age of Ultron inside the game client.
The photo opportunities encourage players to assemble their own versions of the team, use movie-inspired costumes and create images around recognizable scenes.
This separation is effective.
Avengers Tower can remain focused on urgency and mechanical pressure. Times Square can handle celebration, nostalgia and social interaction.
Players interested primarily in rewards or the movie collaboration do not need to complete the highest difficulty of the PvE mode to participate in every part of the event.
PS4 players cannot access the new PvE mode
Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Age of Ultron is not available on PlayStation 4.
NetEase has confirmed the restriction directly in the July 30 patch notes.
The limitation follows a pattern established by previous large-scale PvE content. Marvel Zombies was also unavailable on PS4 because of performance constraints.
Large enemy counts, destructible environments and complex ability effects place substantially more pressure on hardware than a conventional competitive match containing a limited number of heroes.
Avengers Tower appears to combine all three.
Multiple Ultron drones can remain active simultaneously while players use expanded versions of some of Marvel Rivals’ most visually demanding attacks.
Removing the mode from PS4 avoids reducing enemy density or visual complexity across every platform, but it also means part of the player base cannot participate in the main Path to Doomsday chapter.
The general July 30 update and other compatible content remain separate from that restriction.
The absence of a published end date requires caution
NetEase has confirmed the July 30 launch but has not included a specific closing date for the PvE mode in its primary patch notes.
Players should therefore avoid assuming it will remain permanently available.
Path to Doomsday events are designed as chapters within a wider 2026 campaign, and the first Avengers crossover had a defined limited period.
The Times Square Age of Ultron activities run until August 27 at 09:00 UTC, but that does not automatically confirm the same deadline for the PvE queue.
Anyone interested in the story, rewards or enhanced hero gameplay should participate while the mode is clearly active rather than waiting for an unannounced final week.
Path to Doomsday is moving through the Infinity Saga
The larger Path to Doomsday campaign introduces modes and events inspired by Marvel Studios’ Avengers films.
Its first chapter returned to the Battle of New York and Loki’s invasion.
The second moves into Age of Ultron and the consequences of Tony Stark attempting to automate global defence.
Later chapters can continue through the conflicts associated with Infinity War and Endgame as the campaign approaches Avengers: Doomsday.
The structure allows Marvel Rivals to revisit the evolution of the Avengers rather than promoting only the upcoming movie.
Each film offers a different type of gameplay.
The Avengers supports asymmetric conflict around Loki and mind control.
Age of Ultron supports machine-swarm PvE.
Infinity War can draw from Thanos’ search for the Infinity Stones and battles spread across several locations.
Endgame offers large-scale confrontation and the possibility of assembling characters from multiple eras of the Marvel Multiverse.
The current mode therefore functions as one part of a progression toward a much larger final event.
Avengers: Doomsday gives the campaign a fixed destination
Path to Doomsday is scheduled around Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in cinemas on December 18, 2026.
That gives the crossover series a clear endpoint.
Marvel Rivals can move through the Infinity Saga before arriving at the next major Avengers conflict, using familiar films to prepare players for the new theatrical release.
The strategy also gives the game a sustained relationship with Marvel Studios throughout the year.
Rather than releasing one temporary skin collection immediately before the movie, NetEase can maintain interest through several months of modes, screenings, cinematics and character cosmetics.
The risk is repetition.
Every chapter needs a sufficiently different ruleset to avoid feeling like the same event with another film’s enemies.
Moving from asymmetric PvP to cooperative PvE is a substantial enough change to establish a separate identity for Age of Ultron.
PvE allows Marvel Rivals to deliver the scale its heroes promise
Competitive balance necessarily limits superhero power.
Hulk cannot destroy every building with one attack. Iron Man cannot fill the sky with hundreds of missiles. Scarlet Witch cannot rewrite the entire battlefield every time her Ultimate becomes available.
PvE can loosen those restrictions.
Enemies do not need to receive exactly the same opportunities and resources as a human-controlled team. They can arrive in greater numbers, follow readable attack patterns and exist primarily to make the playable heroes feel powerful.
Difficulty can come from scale, elite units, environmental mechanics and boss phases rather than requiring every drone to fight like another competitive hero.
Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Age of Ultron appears designed around that principle.
The Avengers are not entering a fair match.
They are attempting to survive a machine invasion inside a building that no longer recognises them as its owners.
Replayability will determine whether the mode survives beyond its story
The narrative presentation should make the first completion compelling.
The larger challenge begins after players have already watched every cinematic and heard every line of dialogue.
A successful long-term PvE mode needs variation.
Different upgrades can change how each hero develops. Difficulty levels can introduce stronger enemies and new mechanics. Randomized encounters can prevent every run from producing an identical sequence.
Rewards also matter.
Players need reasons to return after completing the central story, whether through Units, titles, sprays, Gallery Cards, cosmetic rewards or progression connected to the wider Path to Doomsday campaign.
Blood Hunt demonstrates that NetEase is willing to expand PvE systems with gear enhancement, refining and extremely high difficulty floors.
It remains unclear whether Age of Ultron will use a comparable persistent progression structure or deliver a shorter cinematic mission.
That distinction will determine whether it becomes a recurring destination or a mode most players complete only a few times.
Ultron’s invasion gives Marvel Rivals its clearest cinematic PvE premise
Marvel Zombies offered survival horror.
Blood Hunt transformed New York into a vampire battlefield.
Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Age of Ultron gives Marvel Rivals a more direct superhero campaign.
The objective is immediately recognizable: Avengers Tower has fallen, F.R.I.D.A.Y. has been compromised and an army of machines is spreading through the building.
The available heroes receive the scale of power needed to confront that threat. Iron Man controls the air, Captain America organizes the frontline, Hulk tears through the swarm and Black Widow eliminates the machines that survive the initial assault.
Ultron remains above the entire conflict, speaking through the network and replacing every body the Avengers destroy.
The result does not need to imitate a traditional single-player game.
Its purpose is to use Marvel Rivals’ existing combat as the foundation for a more cinematic cooperative mission.
Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Age of Ultron launches on July 30, 2026 at 09:00 UTC.
Avengers Tower was designed to protect the world.
The Avengers must now prevent it from becoming the machine that destroys it.
