Upgrade Nodes can make or break a MARVEL SNAP Draft run

Second Dinner has released another guide to MARVEL SNAP Draft, this time focusing on Upgrade Nodes—the between-match decisions that allow players to rebuild and strengthen their decks throughout a run. Content creator SuperTechGod uses a complete run to explain when it is worth adding another card, applying an Augment or changing the Cost or Power of a card already in the deck.

The opening draft establishes the foundation of a strategy, but Upgrade Nodes determine how that initial construction develops. An underwhelming group of cards can become significantly more dangerous after several carefully selected upgrades. Conversely, a promising deck can lose consistency if the player keeps adding cards without a clear purpose or distributes its improvements across the wrong targets.

This progression represents the roguelike component of Draft. Players do not use one fixed deck until the run ends; they must continually adapt it using partially randomized options and the information gathered from every match.

Every match ends with an upgrade

A Draft run begins by choosing one of three core card stacks. Players then repeatedly select one card from three available options until they complete an initial ten-card deck.

The objective is to earn five victories before suffering two defeats. However, the deck entering the first match will not necessarily resemble the one that reaches the fifth.

Every completed match provides another opportunity to improve the deck, regardless of whether the player won or lost. Wins produce better event progression rewards, but a defeat does not prevent access to the next Upgrade Node. Players can therefore address a weakness exposed during the previous match instead of continuing with exactly the same construction.

An upgrade can take three general forms:

  • Add another card to the deck.
  • Apply an Augment to a card.
  • Use a Stat Boost to reduce a card’s Cost or increase its Power.

Each route produces a different type of advantage. The correct decision depends on the current deck, its Energy curve, the reliability of its main combinations and the upgrades already collected during the run.

Adding a card can solve one problem while creating another

Adding a card is the most familiar option from a traditional deck-building perspective. It can introduce another win condition, complete an unfinished synergy, repair the Energy curve or cover a weakness discovered during a match.

However, Draft begins with only ten cards, which makes expanding the deck a meaningful consistency trade-off. As the deck grows, it becomes less likely that the player will draw one specific card without additional draw or deck-manipulation effects.

This makes every addition more complicated than simply choosing the card with the highest individual value. A powerful card that has no connection to the deck’s primary strategy may increase its theoretical ceiling while reducing the frequency of its most important combinations.

Adding a card is most valuable when the new piece performs an identifiable function. It might provide a necessary play for a particular turn, create redundancy for an essential effect, exploit several Augments already in the deck or offer a way to contest Locations that the original construction struggled to win.

It can also be reasonable to accept a strong standalone card when the starting deck lacks enough Power to finish matches. In that situation, sacrificing some consistency may be preferable to retaining a compact deck that cannot generate competitive numbers.

The choice becomes less convincing when a card is merely attractive in isolation. A Draft deck does not need to collect every powerful option it encounters. It needs to improve its ability to execute a coherent plan across six turns.

Augments offer the highest transformative potential

Augments attach additional abilities to cards. They do more than modify numerical values: they can repeat an On Reveal effect, generate Power every turn, destroy another card, reinforce a Location or fundamentally change how a card should be played.

More than one Augment can also be placed on the same card. This stacking system is one of Draft’s greatest sources of power, allowing several abilities to be concentrated on a single card and creating combinations that cannot exist in standard MARVEL SNAP matches.

The option to stack Augments does not mean that repeatedly upgrading one card is always correct. Concentrating every improvement on a single target can produce an extraordinary win condition, but it also makes the deck dependent on drawing that card, finding enough Energy to play it and avoiding the opponent’s disruption.

An Augment is especially effective when it strengthens a function the card already performs. Another doubling effect can become decisive on a card built around multiplying Power, while a destruction effect may activate several components of a Destroy strategy at once.

Other Augments can turn an otherwise secondary card into the deck’s central threat. That is one of the major differences between Draft and constructed play: a card normally considered average can become the foundation of a run after receiving the right combination of upgrades.

The effect still needs to be evaluated within the current deck. A spectacular Augment attached to an awkward or expensive card may contribute less than a modest improvement applied to a reliable piece that appears in most matches and fits naturally into the Energy curve.

Cost reductions can be more valuable than they initially appear

Stat Boosts do not add new abilities. Instead, they directly alter a card’s Cost or Power. Second Dinner uses Vision as an example: a Stat Boost could turn the card into a 4-Cost option or raise it to 11 Power.

A Cost reduction may appear less exciting than an Augment, but its impact can extend across the entire game plan. Playing a card one turn earlier can activate its effect for longer, leave Energy available for another play or enable a combination that previously exceeded the player’s resources.

The value of a discount is not strictly linear. Reducing a card from 6 Cost to 5 does more than save one Energy. It allows the card to enter play before the final turn and creates the possibility of combining it with a 1-Cost card on turn six. Similarly, transforming a 4-Cost card into a 3-Cost option can enable two relevant cards to be played together during the final turn.

That is why SuperTechGod examines situations in which a discount is better than a direct Power increase. If a deck already produces competitive numbers but struggles to deploy its cards efficiently, reducing Cost can resolve a structural problem. It can also improve several later turns when applied to a card with an ongoing or repeatable effect.

A discount is less valuable when applied to a card the player rarely wants to use or when the deck already spends its Energy efficiently. Making a secondary card cheaper does not necessarily improve the deck if it remains one of its least attractive options.

The decision should therefore be based on the new sequences the reduction enables. The relevant question is not only how much a card costs after the upgrade, but which additional combinations become possible because of it.

Direct Power offers reliability and priority control

Increasing Power is the simplest Stat Boost to evaluate. The upgraded card contributes more points to its Location without requiring another condition, improving its performance both inside a combination and as an independent play.

This type of upgrade is particularly useful for decks that already have a functional strategy but lack enough numerical presence. It can also help secure priority, which determines card-reveal order and can be critical when protecting a play from opposing disruption.

Additional Power may be preferable to a Cost reduction when the card already fits correctly into the deck’s curve. If the player does not need to deploy it earlier or combine it with another piece, the discount may provide no practical advantage, while extra Power directly contributes toward winning a Location.

A numerical bonus can become even more valuable when the upgraded card multiplies, moves or redistributes its Power. In those cases, a seemingly modest increase can affect more than one Location or become amplified by the card’s original ability.

However, higher statistics cannot repair every problem. A deck with a poor curve, an unreliable win condition or excessive dependence on one combination does not automatically become consistent after receiving a few additional points.

The deck must be reassessed after every match

One of the video’s central lessons is that Upgrade Nodes should not be approached through a fixed hierarchy. An Augment is not automatically better than a Stat Boost, and a new card should not be accepted simply because it belongs to the same archetype as the initial stack.

Every match provides new information. Players can determine whether the deck contains too many expensive cards, whether its key piece appears often enough, whether it needs to contest priority or whether its primary combination is too vulnerable.

That information should alter the evaluation of the next Upgrade Node. A Power increase may be the correct response after losing two Locations by narrow margins. A Cost reduction can repair a hand that failed to deploy its cards. A new addition may provide the interaction the deck was missing against a recurring strategy.

Players must also consider how much of the run remains. During the first few nodes, there is still time to develop a new strategic direction. Near the fifth match, an option that requires several future upgrades may be less valuable than an immediate and dependable improvement.

This gradual evolution explains how an average deck can become dangerous during the later stages of a run. Draft rewards both the quality of the initial selections and the ability to identify what the deck actually needs after seeing it operate.

Concentrating upgrades creates power but also risk

Upgrade Nodes repeatedly force players to choose between concentration and redundancy. Stacking several improvements on one card can create an extraordinary win condition, but it also increases the deck’s reliance on that single piece.

Distributing Augments and Stat Boosts across multiple cards reduces that risk. The deck can function with a wider range of opening hands and has alternatives if one threat is disrupted. The trade-off is that no individual card reaches the same extreme potential.

The best distribution depends on the deck’s ability to find, protect and exploit its primary target. A cheap and flexible card may be safer to upgrade repeatedly than an expensive option that can only be played during the final turn.

Location variance must also be considered. A concentrated strategy can lose much of its strength when a Location prevents the upgraded card from being played or disables its ability. A deck with several independent threats is generally better equipped to handle unexpected conditions.

The objective is not to avoid extreme combinations, as those are central to Draft’s identity. The real question is whether the potential payoff justifies the accompanying loss of consistency.

Defeats are part of a run’s development

Draft requires players to earn five wins before accumulating two losses, although one Respawn Token can be used per run after reaching the defeat limit. An early loss does not immediately erase all progress, and it still leads to another deck upgrade.

This structure reduces the impact of an imperfect starting draft and allows players to treat defeat as diagnostic information. The failed match exposes weaknesses, and the following Upgrade Node provides an immediate opportunity to intervene.

Losses still have consequences. Two defeats end the run unless a Respawn Token is used, and the final rewards improve substantially at five victories. Nevertheless, providing an upgrade after every match ensures that an unsuccessful result is not completely wasted.

From a design perspective, Upgrade Nodes also create visible escalation. The earliest matches feature decks that remain relatively close to their initial selections. Later encounters can involve cards carrying multiple Augments, modified Costs and levels of Power that would be impossible in the standard mode.

That escalation means a player cannot evaluate an opposing card solely according to its normal constructed role. By match five, an apparently ordinary card may have become the opponent’s most dangerous threat.

Draft remains available until September 8

MARVEL SNAP Draft is currently a limited-time mode and will remain available until the server reset on September 8, 2026. Its Event Shop will stay open for another 48 hours, closing on September 10 so that players have time to spend any remaining Event Currency.

Each run requires a Draft Ticket. Second Dinner provides ten starting tickets and one free daily ticket, with additional entries available through login rewards, mini-events, the reward track and purchases using Gold or real money.

The mode grants rewards after individual matches as well as at the end of a run. A victory awards 15 Event Currency and 15 Draft XP, while a loss still provides eight of each. Reaching five wins grants the largest run reward, including 1,000 XP, 500 Event Currency, Boosters, Credits, another Draft Ticket and a once-per-day Premium Mystery Variant.

The economy adds some pressure to Upgrade Node decisions, particularly when a run approaches its fifth victory. However, the system’s main value is that it forces players to build dynamically instead of treating Draft as a single card-selection phase followed by several identical matches.
