NARAKA: BLADEPOINT is turning one of the most famous political traps in Chinese history into something players can actually interrupt. Rift Traversal's next chapter, Hongmen Banquet, launches on October 21 and places players inside the legendary 206 BCE confrontation between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang, where a ceremonial sword dance concealed an assassination attempt that could have changed the course of Chinese history. Instead of simply watching events unfold, players will prepare the feast, read the signals behind the conspiracy, protect Liu Bang from Xiang Zhuang's blade and eventually escort him away from the banquet alive.

It is an unusually natural fit for NARAKA. The original Hongmen Banquet already contains almost everything one of its scenarios needs: rival warlords, political deception, martial ceremony, an assassination hidden inside a performance and a desperate escape once diplomacy finally gives way to violence. Rift Traversal has increasingly used Chinese history and material culture as something players interact with rather than merely observe, and Hongmen Banquet pushes that philosophy further by converting the decisive beats of the story into actual combat mechanics.

The most dangerous part of the feast is everything nobody says out loud

The historical banquet took place in 206 BCE, after the Qin dynasty was collapsing and two of the rebellion's most powerful leaders had begun looking beyond the defeated dynasty toward the question of who would rule next. Liu Bang had reached Guanzhong and entered the Qin capital region before Xiang Yu, immediately creating a political problem. Xiang Yu possessed the stronger military force, while Liu Bang's earlier arrival could be interpreted as a claim to territory and authority Xiang Yu expected for himself.

Liu Bang consequently travelled to Hongmen to explain himself and defuse the confrontation. The banquet outwardly functioned as diplomacy, but Xiang Yu's adviser Fan Zeng viewed Liu Bang as a future rival who should be eliminated before he became more dangerous. Fan Zeng repeatedly attempted to signal that Xiang Yu should act, but Xiang Yu hesitated. When those signals failed, Fan Zeng moved to a more direct plan: Xiang Yu's cousin Xiang Zhuang would perform a sword dance as entertainment and use the performance as cover to kill Liu Bang.

That moment became so famous that the story eventually produced a Chinese expression describing an apparently innocent act that conceals another intention. NARAKA does not need to invent a combat scenario around the banquet because the source material already contains one.

Hongmen Banquet turns Fan Zeng’s signal into a reaction test

The most interesting part of the new chapter is how 24 Entertainment appears to translate the assassination plot into NARAKA's existing combat language. During the banquet sequence, Fan Zeng prepares to give the signal that sets the attack in motion, and players can intervene before it happens.

Pre-release test information shows that the sequence begins by asking players to interrupt Fan Zeng with a Blue Focus Strike before he completes the signalling action. Succeeding does more than produce a reward: it reduces how aggressively the subsequent assassination attempt develops, effectively allowing players to influence the difficulty of the next stage by recognising and stopping the conspiracy early.

That is a much stronger adaptation than simply spawning a boss after a cutscene. The threat at Hongmen was not initially an open battle. It was a coded political decision being made across a banquet table. Turning that signal into something the player needs to notice and interrupt preserves the logic of the original event while still making it readable through NARAKA's mechanics.

The final live values could still differ from the current test implementation, but the design is already clear. Knowledge and reaction matter before the blade does.

Xiang Zhuang’s sword dance becomes the assassination attempt itself

Once the plot advances, the famous sword dance becomes the central combat challenge. Xiang Zhuang's performance was supposedly entertainment, but the intention was to approach Liu Bang closely enough to kill him without openly turning the gathering into a battle.

Historically, Xiang Bo intervened by joining the dance and repeatedly positioning himself between Xiang Zhuang and Liu Bang, frustrating the assassination without openly accusing the hosts of attempting murder. NARAKA converts that defensive role into player responsibility. Test-server rules currently require players to Counter Xiang Zhuang's repeated killing blows as he attempts to strike Liu Bang during the dance.

The better Liu Bang survives the sequence, the better the reward. Current testing awards between one and three reward crates depending on how much health he retains, making protection quality matter rather than simply treating survival as a binary objective.

It is one of those cases where NARAKA's combat system happens to match the history exceptionally well. The game's parry and Counter mechanics are already built around reading a committed Focus attack and responding at exactly the right moment. A sword dance whose true purpose is to hide lethal attacks provides an almost perfect narrative excuse to test that skill repeatedly.

Before surviving the banquet, players actually have to prepare it

Hongmen Banquet does not begin with the assassination. The new chapter also includes a banquet preparation activity in the Outerworld, reinforcing Rift Traversal's separation between the safer cooperative side of a map and the more dangerous Innerworld.

Current test rules have the preparation event appear shortly after a match begins. Players find dining tables, seating mats, side tables and other ceremonial furnishings scattered around the area and return them to their proper positions. Completing the arrangement produces a reward, while actually taking a seat at the prepared banquet can grant an additional one.

That may sound like a small environmental puzzle compared with the sword fight that follows, but it gives the event much better pacing. Players are not teleporting into a famous historical scene after the conspiracy has already begun. They physically assemble the place where the betrayal is going to happen and then later return to see what that seemingly peaceful preparation has become.

Rift Traversal has always been partly about looting and extraction, so giving mundane objects economic value also suits the mode. The banquet begins as another opportunity to search, interact and collect. Only later does the player discover how dangerous the setting actually is.

Liu Bang’s escape becomes the third act

Surviving Xiang Zhuang is not the end of the story. Historically, Liu Bang eventually used an excuse to leave the banquet and escaped before Fan Zeng's faction could make another serious attempt on his life. His survival would prove enormously consequential: only a few years later, Liu Bang defeated Xiang Yu and founded the Han dynasty as Emperor Gaozu.

NARAKA turns that departure into a final escort sequence. After leaving Hongmen, Liu Bang must be protected from pursuing Chu forces while players guide him back toward the Han camp. Completing the escape produces another reward crate and gives the chapter a clean three-part structure: prepare the banquet, survive the assassination and get the target out alive.

That structure also changes the player's relationship with the historical event. Hongmen Banquet is remembered partly because everybody knows Liu Bang survives. NARAKA is not pretending the player can rewrite the foundation of the Han dynasty completely. Instead, it places the player inside the events that make that known outcome possible.

The appeal comes from participating in history rather than replacing it.

The chapter continues Stormchant’s Outerworld and Innerworld structure

Hongmen Banquet expands Stormchant, the Rift Traversal chapter introduced earlier in 2026 around Liu Bang's rise during the collapse of Qin. Stormchant itself continued the dual-world structure introduced with River Runs Red, dividing a match between the cooperative Outerworld and hostile Innerworld.

In the Outerworld, teams are allied and cannot directly damage one another, creating space for exploration, puzzle solving and PvE objectives without every interaction immediately becoming a player fight. Crossing into the Innerworld changes that relationship completely: teams become hostile, rewards improve and extraction becomes more dangerous. Once players cross over, they cannot simply return to the cooperative side.

Hongmen Banquet uses that structure rather neatly. Preparing the feast belongs to the Outerworld, where cooperation makes thematic sense because the political trap has not yet openly sprung. The assassination and escape sequences appear deeper into the Innerworld portion of the match, where the environment is already more dangerous and rival players can complicate an objective that is difficult enough on its own.

That creates another layer of tension the historical characters did not need to consider. Players may be defending Liu Bang from Xiang Zhuang while knowing another squad is capable of appearing and turning the entire scene into a PvPvE disaster.

Rift Traversal has moved far beyond simple treasure hunting

When Rift Traversal launched in July 2025, its pitch was much easier to describe: enter fractured versions of Holoroth, loot Relics and valuable equipment, fight monsters and other players, then escape through Rift Gates without losing what you carried.

The mode has steadily become more ambitious. Persistent storage and equipment progression remain central, but chapters now contain bespoke story systems, historical characters, puzzles, unique combat encounters, collectibles and different relationships between PvE and PvP. River Runs Red experimented with the dual-world format and historical storytelling around Yue Fei, while Stormchant shifted toward Liu Bang and the final years of Qin.

Hongmen Banquet is particularly revealing because it is barely an extraction-shooter scenario in the conventional sense. One activity asks players to arrange ceremonial furniture. Another requires them to recognise a political signal. The main battle is structured around defending a historical figure during a sword performance. Then the chapter becomes an escort mission.

The extraction layer remains underneath everything, but 24 Entertainment is increasingly using Rift Traversal as a platform for scenario design that would make much less sense inside NARAKA's standard Battle Royale.

New relics continue the mode’s obsession with making history collectible

The update is also adding new Relics connected to the historical theme, including the Silver-Gilt Overlord Armor and Map of Dukang, alongside additional collectibles and examination interactions. Chinese preview material indicates eight new Relics are planned around the wider update.

That continues one of Rift Traversal's most distinctive ideas. Relics are not simply rare drops with large sale values; NARAKA has repeatedly connected them with museum partnerships, historical objects and cultural interpretation. The game has previously worked with institutions including the Shanghai Museum to turn artefacts and porcelain into collectibles that players can discover inside the mode.

Hongmen Banquet extends that approach from material history into narrative history. The important objects are now appearing alongside playable recreations of the events and people surrounding them.

A new Xiling Seal Art Society collaboration is also tied to the Stormchant content. Current test information describes players collecting tokens and interacting with musical and seal-related elements around the map to obtain a collaboration Relic. As with the rest of the pre-release test content, the exact international naming and final implementation should be confirmed once the live October update arrives.

Even the existing Stormchant map is being adjusted around the new chapter

Hongmen Banquet is not arriving as a completely isolated mission bolted onto the existing map. Current development notes indicate changes across Stormchant's activity distribution, including revised container positions, reward weighting and adjustments to several existing mechanics.

The Bronze Chime Bell puzzle is being simplified, the placement and operation of several mechanisms are being adjusted and additional high-value reward opportunities are being redistributed between activities. Test builds also include a new Rewind Device, where players sacrifice Relics of sufficient value to reset eligible nearby loot containers after a countdown, and a Treasure Coffin that requires its own specialised opening tool and contains high-value Relics.

Those systems reinforce the extraction side of the chapter. A squad might enter primarily intending to experience the Hongmen event, but every additional mechanic creates another decision about whether to remain inside the match longer. A valuable coffin, resettable loot area or another historical activity can turn what should have been a safe extraction into one more detour.

Rift Traversal works because greed remains part of every story it tells.

The timing also puts Hongmen Banquet inside a particularly Chinese season

The new chapter arrives during Devourer Season, which has already leaned heavily into Chinese cultural and martial themes. NARAKA is currently running its crossover with The Legend of Qin, bringing characters, weapons and the Crescent Moon Valley battle into both Survival and Rift Traversal. The collaboration similarly sends players into a historical-fantasy battlefield where they protect Tianming against Qin forces.

The two events are not the same storyline, but they create an unusually coherent October for the game. The Legend of Qin explores a fictionalised martial-arts world built around the Qin era, while Hongmen Banquet jumps directly into one of the defining political episodes surrounding the dynasty's collapse.

NARAKA has always worn its Chinese influences openly, but the current direction goes further than visual inspiration. Historical locations, artefacts, literature and well-known stories are increasingly being turned into actual mechanics.

Hongmen Banquet is history built around NARAKA’s best button

There is another reason this specific story works so well: Countering is one of NARAKA's defining mechanics. The red flash of a Counter against an incoming Focus Strike is central to the game's combat mind game, creating a constant relationship between commitment, prediction and punishment.

The Hongmen story is fundamentally about the same thing on a political scale. Fan Zeng tries to create an opening. Xiang Yu fails to commit. Xiang Zhuang disguises an attack as something harmless. Xiang Bo reads the intention and positions himself to stop it. Zhang Liang recognises the escalating danger and calls for Fan Kuai. Liu Bang understands that survival now means leaving.

Everybody at the banquet is trying to read everybody else before somebody finally makes an irreversible move.

Turning the sword dance into a sequence of Counters therefore feels much more appropriate than simply giving Xiang Zhuang an enormous boss health bar. The player succeeds by recognising intent beneath presentation, which is exactly what the historical story has represented for more than two millennia.

Take your seat on October 21

Rift Traversal: Hongmen Banquet launches in NARAKA: BLADEPOINT on October 21, 2026, expanding the Stormchant chapter with a playable recreation of the famous confrontation between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang. Players will prepare the banquet, intervene when Fan Zeng attempts to trigger the assassination, Counter Xiang Zhuang's sword-dance attacks and escort Liu Bang to safety once the feast collapses into open danger.

The update is also expected to expand Stormchant with new Relics, reward opportunities and map mechanics, although several detailed systems currently visible through the test server remain subject to adjustment before the live release.

The outcome of the Hongmen Banquet has been known for more than two thousand years. Liu Bang survives. Xiang Yu loses his chance. The struggle eventually ends with the founding of the Han dynasty.

NARAKA is interested in the few minutes where none of that looked certain.

The table is set.

So is the trap.
