NBA 2K’s new rival opens its doors this weekend with a free beta and full cross-play

Competitive arcade basketball has spent years searching for an alternative capable of challenging the dominance of NBA 2K. Some projects have attempted it by focusing on pure spectacle, others on online play or deep customization. Now, NBA THE RUN is about to take its most significant step yet with a free open beta that will allow any player to hit the court ahead of its official launch.

The studio has confirmed that the Open Betawill take place onMay 30, between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM PT, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Crucially for the game's future, it will feature full cross-play across all platforms from day one. No registration or access codes will be required; any user can simply download the client and jump straight into the action.

The beta marks a make-or-break opportunity for a project that has turned heads thanks to a proposition vastly different from traditional simulation. Instead of chasing the extreme realism of NBA 2K, NBA THE RUN bets on a streetball-centric experience focused on flashy moves, a breakneck pace, and competitive matches designed for both solo and squad play.

During the test, players will have access to Knockout Squads and Knockout Solos, two variants built around fast-paced matchups where players must survive round after round to be the last ones standing. This setup leans closer to modern formulas inspired by battle royale competitive experiences than conventional basketball game modes.

The beta will also mark the gameplay debut of new official NBA players, expanding a roster that aims to blend real-world league superstars with original characters created specifically for the game's universe.

Among them is Destiny "DJ" Jackson, a new addition to the so-called Street Legends—characters designed by the developers to embody the urban basketball culture that inspires much of the project's identity. This approach allows the studio to build a more diverse cast without relying solely on traditional sports licensing.

Another major draw of the playtest will be the new signature style moves coming to the gameplay system. The developers have confirmed the addition of mechanics like advanced crossovers, Shammgods, Slip ‘N Slides, and other never-before-seen techniques aimed at boosting creativity and individual expression on the court.

The nod to the Shammgod is particularly massive for basketball fans. The move, popularized by former player and coach God Shammgod, has become one of the most iconic handles in modern streetball, showcased by NBA stars like Kyrie Irving and Jamal Crawford. Its inclusion fits hand-in-glove with the arcade philosophy behind NBA THE RUN.

The beta arrives just days before the full global release scheduled forJune 9, making this test a final opportunity for the team to gather data on game balance, server stability, and performance. For multiplayer titles centered on online competition, these stress tests are vital for detecting infrastructure bottlenecks that don't surface during closed development phases.

Going all-in on cross-play from the get-go could also be a deciding factor in its success. One of the recurring pitfalls of online sports games is the fragmentation of the player base across different platforms. Allowing PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players to share the same matchmaking pool from day one should help maintain a highly active user base and keep queue times to a minimum.

For now, NBA THE RUN still faces an uphill battle. Competing in the basketball market is never easy when a franchise as deeply entrenched as NBA 2K dominates the space. However, the studio seems to have grasped a fundamental truth: trying to copy its main rival would likely be a mistake.

Instead, they are banking on speed, spectacle, streetball culture, and a distinct focus on social play.

This weekend will be the players' first real chance to see if that formula has what it takes to carve out its own space on the hardwood.
