The sea beyond Nalcott has a warning for anyone planning to cross it: six rules stand between you and the way home. That is the ominous premise of the latest Once Human preview, which confirms that the free ocean expansion, Isles of Abyss, is coming on October 21 (PT).

The trailer keeps those rules at the centre of its mystery. It does not, however, establish that they are six new gameplay mechanics. What the developers have described in writing is a maritime survival scenario built around scattered islands, changing conditions, naval encounters and dangers beneath the surface.

Survival moves from the shore to the open sea

Isles of Abyss takes players into a cluster of islands where gathering resources and building facilities remain essential, but travel between destinations becomes part of the challenge. Dynamic weather and a day-night cycle will affect exploration, while the developer says more dangerous enemies emerge after dark.

The setting also brings new ways to acquire equipment, resources, facilities and technology through island and underwater exploration. Players will be able to encounter Deviations in the wilderness, fight them and attempt to capture them. Rather than serving as scenery between objectives, the ocean is being positioned as the space that connects—and threatens—each expedition.

Calamity Towers give the server a shared objective

As the scenario’s World Progress advances, Calamity Towers will activate across the ocean. Players can rally allies, sail to a tower and take on its challenge. According to the developer’s test preview, the first defeat of a tower sends rewards to everyone on the server and gives World Progress an additional boost. Further progress brings new variations to the tower challenges.

That structure gives crews a reason to pay attention to what the wider server is doing, not just what is happening on their own island. It also means a successful voyage can help move the scenario toward its next phase.

Other encounters promise a different kind of decision. Voyager ships will travel random routes through major waters, and players can either attack them from their own vessel or board them for supplies. Larger ships with better facilities are intended to offer tougher challenges and more valuable loot. The developer has also tested changes to cannon switching, aiming assistance for projectiles with drop, and ship handling.

Four hazardous zones—and more below the surface

The developer has outlined four types of Haywire Zone for its final test. In the Mist of Deceit, visibility deteriorates as a player’s health falls, making light-based items important. Skyfire transforms a volcanic region with falling golden meteorites that conceal valuable resources. Time Rain accelerates growth but also wears down equipment faster, while the Black Tide brings recurring waves of pollution that alter local survival conditions.

These are four named environmental events, not a confirmed explanation of the trailer’s six rules. The distinction matters: the new preview invites players to watch for six warnings, but the available written information does not identify them as a six-part system.

There is more to find underwater, too. Treasure maps can lead players to hidden sites in the Abyssal Sea, including shipwrecks and laboratories. On land, randomized Calamity Nests culminate in a fight against the Calamity Owl. A separate four-player dungeon, The Sunken Lord, is planned to appear after the scenario reaches its second phase and its purification progress reaches 100%.

What remains to be confirmed before October 21

A confidential final test of Isles of Abyss began on September 16 and is scheduled to run until October 8 (PT). The developer has explicitly said that the scenario is still in development and that feedback may change what reaches the public release. Its test-phase lengths, in particular, should not be taken as the final scenario schedule.

For now, October 21 is the date to mark. The six-rule warning gives the voyage its unsettling tone; the developer’s preview gives players a clearer idea of what awaits them at sea. How those elements fit together in the finished expansion remains a mystery worth sailing into.
