Ten years later, Overwatch celebrates its Anniversary with a full orchestral soundtrack

Some anniversaries are celebrated with skins or temporary events. And then there are those that attempt to summarize an entire decade in music. Overwatch has revealed the process behind the creation of its 10th Anniversary theme, a piece recorded with a full orchestra that will accompany the 2026 anniversary event and, according to Blizzard, will also be part of the game’s future.

The approach is quite different from a conventional update.

Instead of focusing solely on playable content, the studio is using music to reinforce something broader: the identity accumulated over ten years of history, characters, and changes within Overwatch.

And the promotional message makes the intention clear:

A decade of Overwatch deserves its own soundtrack.”

The video dives into the work behind the recording, showing musicians performing the new theme live. Blizzard seems to want to treat the composition less as an accompaniment and more as a symbolic piece tied to the game's legacy.

That makes sense.

Despite all the changes the franchise has undergone—new formats, competitive restructuring, or narrative evolution—the music has always been one of the most recognizable elements of the Overwatch universe. Heroic themes, emotional arrangements, and character-associated leitmotifs have accompanied the game since the very beginning.

Because of this, creating a specific composition for the tenth anniversary works almost like a time capsule for the veteran community.

What is interesting is another phrase included in the announcement:

the music will appear not only during the anniversary event, but also "in everything we are building for the future of Overwatch."

That detail suggests the theme could become a recurring motif in the game’s upcoming eras or even act as a new centerpiece for its sonic identity.

The community has reacted especially to the use of a full orchestra, something Blizzard usually reserves for moments where they want to reinforce an epic or historic feeling within their franchises.

And ten years are enough to justify it.

Overwatch seems to recall something that many live-service games rarely achieve: surviving this long means accumulating shared memories in addition to seasons and updates.

Because after a decade, perhaps a soundtrack is no longer just for accompanying matches.

Sometimes it ends up functioning as a reminder of everything that happened between the first time someone picked a hero… and the moment the game turned ten years old.
