Following the introduction of the basics to start a match in the first episode of its new tutorial series, Firaxis Games has published the second chapter of the Official Guide to Getting Started in Civilization VII, this time focusing on one of the most vital aspects of the game: empire-building and management.
The video, hosted by content creator Quill18, arrives just a few weeks after the launch of Test of Time, the largest free update Civilization VII has received since its release. This massive patch has overhauled fundamental systems within the game, altering progression, victory conditions, and the evolution of civilizations across different historical eras.
Test of Time changes how you build a civilization
The headline feature of the update is the introduction of Time-Tested Civilizations, a mechanic that allows players to keep the same civilization throughout the entire campaign instead of being forced to evolve into a different one during era transitions.
To support this new philosophy, Firaxis has introduced the Syncretism system, which allows empires to adopt unique infrastructure and units from other cultures without abandoning their primary civilization's identity. Players can also utilize the Affirmation option, tailored to further reinforce the distinctive traits of their chosen civilization.
The result is a much more flexible and personalized approach to imperial management than what was seen in previous versions.
Victory conditions have been completely redesigned
One of the aspects receiving the most attention in this new episode is the victory progression system.
Firaxis has entirely removed the old Legacy Paths, replacing them with a much more open structure where players can steer their development toward distinct strategic goals from the very first turn.
Victory conditions are now streamlined into four major areas:
- Military
- Cultural
- Economic
- Scientific
Furthermore, progress toward these victories begins right in the Classical Antiquity, allowing players to map out a global strategy from the earliest stages of the match.
The new Triumphs replace Legacy Paths
The update also introduces one of the most critical components of the entire overhaul: Triumphs.
This brand-new set of optional objectives completely replaces Legacy Paths, adding over 90 distinct challenges spread across six core attributes:
- Militaristic
- Cultural
- Scientific
- Economic
- Diplomatic
- Expansionist
Each completed Triumph grants specific bonuses and helps define the identity of every match, encouraging vastly different playstyles even when utilizing the exact same civilization.
A tutorial built for both new players and veterans
While the series is primarily designed to welcome newcomers to Civilization VII, it also serves as an essential guide for returning veterans following the launch of Test of Time.
The sheer scale of the update means that numerous core systems have shifted significantly from the launch version. In fact, Firaxis described the patch as the culmination of over a year of gathering community feedback, testing, and revisions.
Alongside the major overhauls, the update includes:
- A new free leader: Alexander the Great.
- A new map type (Fractal Continent).
- Upgraded Map Generation.
- New narrative events.
- Balance adjustments.
- Overhauls to the user interface and advisory systems.
The update that could define the future of Civilization VII
Since its launch, Civilization VII has faced various critiques and suggestions regarding some of its more experimental systems.
Test of Time represents Firaxis’s most ambitious response to date. The ability to maintain a single civilization throughout the game, the reworked victory conditions, and the Triumph system aim to recapture the classic feel of the franchise without abandoning the fresh ideas introduced in this entry.
This is precisely why this new tutorial series is so relevant.
Learning to build an empire in Civilization VII is no longer just about founding cities and churning out armies.
It now means deciding exactly what kind of legacy you want to leave behind when your civilization is ultimately put to the test of time..
