Civilization VII reveals Tonga with the naval-focused Lords of the South ability

07/11/2025 - 12:05

Civilization VII expands its roster with Tonga, showcased in the latest Civ Tour as a civilization built on oceanic mastery and centuries of political influence across the Pacific. From the early Polynesian voyages nearly three thousand years ago to the rise of the Tu’i Tonga Empire around 1000 CE, this kingdom shaped regional power through tribute, alliances, and hierarchical rule.

In-game, Tonga excels in coastal dominance thanks to its unique ability, Lords of the South, which grants increased Influence on City Halls and the Palace when placed next to Coast tiles. This strengthens their political reach and coastal development, though they cannot incorporate City-States, pushing Tonga toward a self-reliant and maritime-driven playstyle.

Players who enjoy archipelago maps, naval expansion, and strategic coastal pressure will find Tonga a standout choice. With this addition, Civilization VII continues to enrich its lineup with cultures whose real-world histories shaped entire regions.
