The Thieves Guild returns ten years later to star in the new era of The Elder Scrolls Online

A decade after their original debut, one of Tamriel’s most beloved organizations is stepping back into the spotlight. During the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, ZeniMax Online Studios officially unveiled Season One: Return of the Thieves Guild. Arriving on July 8, this marks the maiden voyage of The Elder Scrolls Online’s brand-new seasonal model and will be completely free for all players

This update represents a massive paradigm shift for ESO. After years of relying on massive annual Chapters, the MMORPG is transitioning to a seasonal format designed to deliver content with greater frequency and flexibility—starting with the return of the legendary Thieves Guild.

The Guild’s story continues a decade later

The most enticing aspect of Return of the Thieves Guild is that it is neither a reboot nor a reimagining.

The new campaign acts as a direct sequel to the Thieves Guild storyline introduced back in 2016, reuniting players with iconic characters and unresolved plot threads that veterans will fondly remember from their adventures in Hew's Bane.

Players will once again team up with Quen, one of the most popular characters from that classic expansion, to help expand the Guild's influence into Daggerfall while investigating the operations of the dangerous Koldane Cartel.

To complement this fresh narrative arc, the region of Glenumbra will also receive targeted visual overhauls.

Advanced stealth mechanics for master thieves

Season One introduces a suite of new tools designed to fully immerse players in the ultimate thief fantasy.

Confirmed gameplay features include:

  • New hiding spots: Take cover inside curtains, wardrobes, and flowerpots.
  • Somnol Powder, a brand-new consumable used to temporarily incapacitate guards.
  • Expanded infiltration and evasion options.
  • A unique Mythicitem that evolves as the season progresses.

This marks the most substantial stealth-oriented overhaul the game has seen since the Thieves Guild first crept into Tamriel ten years ago.

Sheogorath stars in a bizarre new adventure across Tamriel

Thieves won't be the only ones causing trouble this season.

Season One also weaves in a major new storyline featuring Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness.

According to the developers, this arc consists of six quests following Sheogorath as he attempts to live life as a mere mortal after temporarily relinquishing his divine powers. Naturally, absolute chaos ensues as his reality-bending abilities begin to manifest in wildly unpredictable ways all over Tamriel.

The high seas become Tamriel’s next great battlefield

One of the most unexpected reveals in the showcase trailer was the announcement of the High Seas of Tamriel event.

This upcoming gameplay expansion will introduce:

  • Naval combat.
  • Underwater exploration.
  • Deep-sea fishing.
  • Oceanic puzzles.
  • Dynamic maritime encounters.

While the event is scheduled to roll out later in the season, it stands as one of the most mechanically ambitious systems ZeniMax has ever engineered for ESO.

New permanent systems and endgame activities

Season One also introduces several permanent features aimed at enriching ESO’s long-term endgame loop:

Sage's Vault

A fresh activity completely detached from traditional combat, focusing instead on puzzles, traps, exploration, and heavy stealth. Players will navigate randomized vaults brimming with interconnected secrets.

Rumors

An investigation and quest system driven entirely by clues without automatic map markers, drawing direct inspiration from the classic RPG design of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

Favors

New narrative questlines tied to specific characters that evolve dynamically over time, yielding exclusive seasonal rewards.

The dawn of a new chapter ESO

Return of the Thieves Guild is far more than just another content drop.

It marks the official maiden voyage of The Elder Scrolls Online’s seasonal architecture and stands as ZeniMax’s most ambitious gamble since the game’s original launch in 2014.

And if this reveal trailer makes anything clear, it’s that the absolute best way to kick off a new era in Tamriel was to bring back its most legendary outlaws.

Because some heists never go out of style..
