A classic mode returns with extra rewards as THE FINALS expands social options and free content

Major updates don't always need to bring brand-new maps or radical gameplay overhauls. Sometimes, the updates the community appreciates most are those that expand match variety, improve the social experience, and add fresh ways to progress. That is precisely what Embark Studios is aiming for with Update10.9.0 for THE FINALS—a patch that revives one of the most popular World Tour events, introduces new features for playing with friends, and drops a substantial amount of cosmetic content.
The headline feature is the return of Risk & Reward, an event that many veteran players will remember from previous seasons. This time around, the formula shifts to Team Deathmatch, introducing a system that financially rewards contestants based on the weapons and gadgets they choose to run during the match. In other words, stepping out of your comfort zone can become a massive strategic advantage.
This concept aligns perfectly with the core philosophy of THE FINALS—a shooter that, since launch, has constantly incentivized creative playstyles and unconventional loadouts. While many competitive titles suffer from rigid, stale metas, Risk & Reward does the exact opposite: pushing players to experiment with less common gear in exchange for greater in-match payouts.
The event arrives at an interesting crossroads for the title. Now past its two-year milestone, THE FINALS continues to rely on its signature blend of dynamic destruction, extreme verticality, and untraditional competitive formats to carve out its own space in a crowded multiplayer shooter market.
Another major pillar of this update is the new Safehouse Standard Event Pass, a themed track developed around the fictional corporation ALFA ACTA, one of the organizations embedded within the game's narrative universe. The pass features 16 rewards, including new weapon skins, decorative charms, and the Deadbolt Directive outfit, inspired by the character Loretta "Deadbolt" McJohnson.
While THE FINALS is primarily recognized for its chaotic gameplay, Embark has progressively built a distinct universe through fictional sponsors, corporate branding, and themed events that inject lore into the game show without the need for traditional narrative campaigns.
The update also rolls out a highly requested social feature: Open to Join. This new system makes managing who can hop into a squad much more seamless. When toggled on, friends of any current party member can join the lobby directly, facilitating quick team assembly without the hassle of constant invite spamming.
While it seems like a minor quality-of-life tweak, it addresses a genuine community need. One of Embark's main objectives over recent seasons has been boosting group play, especially in competitive modes where communication and coordination are paramount. Furthermore, integrated Discord support will now allow players on shared servers to locate matches and party up with ease.
On the premium content side, the patch introduces the Data Crusader bundle, a tech-heavy, futuristic collection that comes packed with 2,400 Multibucks (the game's premium currency). This type of DLC pack has become a staple of THE FINALS' monetization strategy, supplementing the free-to-play model without impacting competitive balance.
For contestants who prefer grinding out free rewards, Embark has reactivated the Stream Tangerine Twitch Drops, allowing players to secure exclusive skins for the SH1900, Model 1887, and M60 simply by watching streams with drops enabled. The campaign will remain active until June 11, 2026, continuing a strategy that has kept the game highly visible on Twitch since day one.
Finally, the in-game store receives the Cut To The Bone set, a skeletal-themed cosmetic collection leaning into the macabre humor that characterizes many of the game's most popular skins.
Beyond the cosmetics, the update includes a long list of bug fixes and balance adjustments. While Embark hasn't spotlighted them as major features, they remain essential for maintaining competitive stability.
Update 10.9.0 might not be a revolutionary overhaul, but it proves something Embark has been doing right for a long time: maintaining a steady flow of content that blends events, quality-of-life updates, and rewards for all types of players.
And in a game show like THE FINALS, where the community thrives on variety and spectacle, sometimes that is just as important as dropping a brand-new map.
