Warhammer's tiger army finally enters combat with a new character and a massive update

After years of expanding factions with large expansions and Legendary Lords, Total War: WARHAMMER III is testing a different formula. Smaller, more specific, and focused on distinct characters. The result is Bhashiva, the White Tiger of Shang-Yang, a new mercenary commander who arrives alongside her own fighting force, starring in one of the game's most unique additions to date. All of this arrives with the release of Update 8.0, available starting this week.
The new trailer showcases Bhashiva leading The Claws of the White Tiger, a company of tiger warriors tied to the territory of Grand Cathay. Narratively, the character acts as a mercenary in the service of Zhao Ming, but the real highlight is how she alters the playstyle. Creative Assembly has designed this faction around ambushes, mobility, aggressiveness, and specialized units, moving away from Grand Cathay's traditionally more defensive style.
According to the developers, Bhashiva was meant to feel like a predator on the battlefield—capable of appearing, striking, and vanishing before the enemy can react. This philosophy translates to her troops as well, focusing on speed, stealth, and precise strikes rather than heavy frontlines.
What makes this addition interesting is that it doesn't arrive via a traditional expansion. Bhashiva represents the first "Character Pack" for Total War: WARHAMMER III, a smaller and more affordable format designed to introduce highly requested characters without the need to build massive DLCs with dozens of new units. Creative Assembly has acknowledged that there are many popular names within the Warhammer universe that might not justify a full expansion but still deserve to be in the game. Bhashiva serves as an experiment to see if this model has a future.
In terms of gameplay, the character incorporates her own unique mechanics. These include systems related to missions for Zhao Ming, gathering special resources, and the so-called Tiger Court—a system oriented toward strategic buffs through relics and faction decisions. New exclusive units also make an appearance, such as various types of Tiger Warriors, specialized heroes, and options focused on building armies that contrast sharply with standard Grand Cathay rosters.
Beyond the DLC, the release is accompanied by Update 8.0, which introduces balance adjustments, tweaks for Grand Cathay, bug fixes, and additional free content, including the hero Taoyan the Merciless, available to all players.
Initial reception appears positive. Some specialized reviews highlight that, despite adding fewer units than previous expansions, Bhashiva manages to feel distinct, providing a unique themed campaign and tactical style. Others point out that very lack of scale as a potential weak spot compared to more ambitious DLCs.
There is also a relevant component for lore enthusiasts. The Tiger Warriors had existed for years merely as minor references within the Warhammer Fantasy universe. This pack not only makes them playable but significantly expands their background within the world of Grand Cathay.
The real question isn't whether Bhashiva will be a strong commander within Immortal Empires, but rather if this new content model will shape the game's future. Because if it works, secondary characters highly requested by the community could end up arriving sooner than expected.
And Creative Assembly has already dropped a major hint: there are still plenty of fan favorites waiting for their turn.
