Heavy Cavalry: Heavy tanks return to dominate the battlefield in War Thunder's massive new update

Gaijin Entertainment has officially unveiled Heavy Cavalry, the next major update for War Thunder, and everything points to it being one of the most significant expansions of 2026. While the trailer focuses on showcasing the spectacular nature of the new vehicles and combat, the update hides much more: new top-tier main battle tanks, active protection systems, advanced aviation weaponry, revamped maps, and several mechanics that could change how the game is played both on the ground and in the air
Following recent updates centered on major technological breakthroughs and visual upgrades, Heavy Cavalry places the spotlight firmly on modern armored power and the evolution of next-generation combat systems.
Elite tanks take center stage
The update's name itself leaves little doubt about Gaijin's chosen direction.
The first frames of the trailer showcase several of the world's most advanced main battle tanks equipped with Active Protection Systems (APS)—a technology increasingly present on modern military vehicles. The community has already identified advanced variants of Western and Eastern tanks that could join the tech tree during this update.
APS allows vehicles to intercept incoming anti-tank missiles and projectiles before they impact the hull, adding a fresh tactical layer to top-tier engagements.
Its introduction marks a major shift for high-tier ground battles, where guided missiles and high-penetration munitions currently dominate much of the combat.
New weapons for modern aerial warfare
Heavy Cavalry also seems to be betting big on aviation.
The trailer sequences show several weapon systems that the community has been requesting for a long time, including anti-radiation missiles and advanced anti-ship weaponry. Among the systems identified by players, highlights include references to weapons like the AGM-88 HARM and the AGM-84 Harpoon, two of the most prominent missiles used by modern air forces.
If their full implementation is confirmed, War Thunder will considerably expand the options available for electronic warfare and long-range strikes.
Classic maps receive a complete visual overhaul
In addition to the new vehicles, Gaijin has confirmed major improvements for several ground battle environments.
The Ash River and 38th Parallel locations have been visually rebuilt from the ground up, while a new winter version of Ardennes will also arrive. According to the developers, the goal is to keep the gameplay that players know intact while modernizing the environments with a much more cinematic and realistic look.
These revamps are part of Gaijin's ongoing effort to update some of the game's oldest maps without radically altering their layout.
New mechanics for landings and air operations
One of the most interesting additions in Heavy Cavalry is the incorporation of arresting gear at land-based airfields.
This technology, typically found on aircraft carriers, will allow planes equipped with an arresting hook to significantly reduce their braking distance after touchdown. The system will activate automatically upon deploying the landing gear on compatible aircraft.
While it might seem like a minor addition, it represents a major quality-of-life improvement for numerous naval aircraft operating from short runways.
An update looking toward the future of modern combat
Heavy Cavalry continues War Thunder's trend of edging ever closer to contemporary military conflicts and technologies.
The combination of APS, new missiles, advanced avionics systems, visual upgrades, and next-generation vehicles proves that Gaijin continues to push the game's technological ceiling more than a decade after its launch.
The community already considers it one of the biggest updates of the year
Initial reactions from players have been overwhelmingly positive.
Many veterans note that the combination of new mechanics, modern vehicles, and advanced weaponry makes Heavy Cavalry one of the most ambitious expansions War Thunder has received in recent years.
And looking at what was shown in the trailer, it's easy to understand the hype.
Because if Leviathans brought giants to the oceans, HeavyCavalry seems ready to take modern armored warfare to a whole new level.
The battlefields of War Thunder are about to get a lot more dangerous.
