When Germany invaded the Soviet Union, Nikolai Gastello was already a squadron leader and an experienced pilot with 9 years of flying experience. Two days after the start of Operation Barbarossa, on June 24, 1941, Gastello shot down a Luftwaffe plane using only the turret of a DB-3f that was resting on an airfield.

On June 26, the plane that Gastello was piloting was hit by anti-aircraft fire in the fuel tank and caught fire; Gastello flew his burning bomber towards the enemy. He received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and his courage became an example for other Soviet pilots.
