World of Tanks revolutionizes matchmaking and brings back some of its most popular modes in Update 2.3

02/06/2026 - 12:15

The arrival of a new update in World of Tanks usually brings balance adjustments, time-limited events, and new rewards. However, Update 2.3 aims at something much more important for the community: a deep overhaul of the matchmaking system, one of the most debated areas by players for years.

Wargaming has confirmed that the patch will be available starting June 3rd, and it comes alongside improvements to match quality, changes for the French Fauteur heavy tank, the return of fan-favorite modes like Equalize! and Steel Hunter, as well as the kickoff of Battle Pass Season XX and a new Global Map campaign.

Matchmaking receives some of the community's most requested changes

Without a doubt, the main highlight of the update is the overhaul of the matchmaking system.

Since the beginning of the year, Wargaming had teased that it was working on various improvements aimed at reducing some of the most frustrating situations players encounter in battle. After several months of gathering data and feedback, the company has decided to implement the first major wave of changes.

Among the most notable new features is the reduction of matches where Tier VII and IX vehicles face enemies two tiers higher—a situation that has historically drawn criticism due to the power gap between vehicles.

A new limit for self-propelled guns is also being introduced, establishing a maximum of two SPGs per team. This measure aims to reduce the constant pressure these units can exert on certain map positions.

Another important change affects platoons. Moving forward, the system will attempt to pair groups of players against other platoons of an equivalent tier, improving the competitive balance of each clash.

Additionally, Wargaming will reduce the frequency of incomplete battles, favoring matchups closer to the classic 15-versus-15format.

The developer has been particularly clear regarding its goal: to make matches fairer, more varied, and more comfortable, without sacrificing matchmaking speed.

The Fauteur receives major buffs

The update also includes a package of adjustments for the Fauteur, the Tier XI French heavy tank recently introduced to the game.

As Wargaming explains, the changes affect both its base statistics and its special ability, allowing players to utilize its characteristic firing mode with a greater sense of control and effectiveness.

Although the studio has reserved the specific values for the full patch notes, the objective seems clear: to increase the vehicle's competitiveness in high-tier battles without radically altering its gameplay identity.

Equalize! returns, allowing low tiers to face the highest tiers

Between June 12th and 14th, and again between June 19th and 21st, one of the most popular experimental modes of recent years will make its return: Equalize!

The premise is as simple as it is fun. Tier I and Tier X vehicles will be able to cross paths in the same battle thanks to a modified parameters system that compensates for power differences.

Lower-tier tanks will receive special buffs allowing them to compete much more effectively against far more advanced machines, creating situations that would be impossible within the standard mode.

This format has gained massive popularity because it completely breaks the usual rules of World of Tanks, allowing players to experiment with unconventional setups without worrying about normal game progression.

Steel Hunter turns World of Tanks into a battle royale once again

Another major return will be Steel Hunter, available from June 8th to 15th.

This mode transforms World of Tanks into an experience inspired by modern battle royales. Players start with basic vehicles, scout the map for resources and upgrades, and must survive as the safe zone progressively shrinks.

Since its original debut, Steel Hunter has become one of the game's most successful temporary modes, thanks to its combination of real-time progression, survival, and high-tension solo encounters.

Battle Pass Season XX is now underway

The update also marks the beginning of Battle Pass Season XX: In the Arenas, active from June 3rd.

In addition to new rewards, customization elements, and resources, players will be able to continue accumulating Tokens to unlock the new KB-52, one of the most important exclusive vehicles in the current progression system.

The tank will be available for 28 Tokens, and those who saved the tokens earned during Season XIX will be able to get significantly closer to unlocking it from day one.

Clan wars return to the Global Map

The most competitive players won't be left without content either.

Season 23 of the Global Map will begin on June 8th and run until July 11th, reactivating the territorial struggle between clans for resources, provinces, and exclusive rewards.

Historically, these campaigns have served to gather some of the most organized groups in the entire community, becoming one of the most vital high-level activities in the game.

More customization without sacrificing visibility

Lastly, Wargaming continues to expand customization possibilities with new 3D styles for more vehicles.

The new feature is that the game incorporates an automatic transparency system when aiming, allowing decorative elements to become translucent whenever they might block the player's view.

It is a minor change, but it addresses a recurring community concern: being able to customize vehicles without harming the combat experience.

Overall, Update 2.3 represents one of the most comprehensive overhauls World of Tanks has seen in recent months.

And while the new modes, events, and rewards will draw much of the attention, the new matchmaking system is likely the change that will have the biggest impact on the day-to-day experience of millions of commanders.

Because in the end, no reward is as important as entering a battle and feeling that everyone has an equal chance to win. More information here.
