Blizzard Entertainment has revealed Eclipse, the climactic final major content update for World of Warcraft: Midnight. Announced during BlizzCon 2026 with the new Threshold cinematic trailer, the update brings Xal’atath within reach of her ultimate objective: Azeroth’s Worldsoul.

Throughout the Worldsoul Saga, Xal’atath has consistently remained ahead of Azeroth’s defenders. The Harbinger has manipulated conflicts, gathered power and directed the Devouring Host toward the planet’s most vulnerable points. Eclipse will finally force players to confront her directly rather than reacting to another stage of her wider plan.

The conflict will take place deeper beneath Azeroth than players have previously travelled, passing through hidden Titan installations and culminating in an eight-boss raid called the Worldcore. Blizzard is positioning this confrontation as both the ending of Midnight’s central conflict and the event that will carry the Worldsoul Saga into its third and final expansion, The Last Titan.

Eclipse is expected to arrive as Midnight’s Patch 12.2, although Blizzard has not yet announced an exact release date.

Xal’atath Stands on the Threshold of Victory

The Threshold reveal presents an unusually dangerous situation for Azeroth. Xal’atath is no longer searching for an entrance, gathering artefacts or attempting to weaken her enemies from a distance. She has reached the final barrier between herself and the Worldsoul.

Blizzard describes the Void as having breached the heart of Azeroth, with Xal’atath standing at the precipice of victory. The language is deliberately final: players can either confront the darkness or allow themselves—and potentially the entire world—to be consumed by it.

The Worldsoul has always been one of the most important forces in Warcraft’s cosmology. Azeroth is not merely the planet on which the game takes place; it contains a powerful nascent world-soul whose eventual awakening has concerned Titans, demons, Old Gods and other cosmic factions across the franchise’s history.

Xal’atath’s attempt to claim that power therefore carries consequences far beyond the destruction of a city or kingdom. If she gains control of Azeroth’s Worldsoul, the balance between the major cosmic forces could change permanently.

That scale explains why Eclipse is being presented as more than the conclusion of another raid tier. Blizzard says the events inside the Worldcore will produce a revelation and conflict that directly establishes the next stage of the Worldsoul Saga.

The Mantle Vault Opens Beneath Azeroth

Players pursuing Xal’atath will enter the Mantle Vault, a large new zone constructed and concealed by the Titans thousands of years ago.

Unlike many underground areas in World of Warcraft, the Mantle Vault is not being portrayed as a uniformly dark network of tunnels. Blizzard describes it as a diverse subterranean biome containing an ecosystem based around stone, crystal and Azerite. Its wildlife includes stone worms, crystalline elementals and other creatures shaped by the unusual environment surrounding the Worldcore.

The Titan origins of the Vault should also give Blizzard an opportunity to explore one of the Worldsoul Saga’s central questions: whether the Titans were protecting Azeroth, controlling her or pursuing a mixture of both objectives.

The expansion has repeatedly challenged older assumptions about the Titan-forged order imposed on the planet. Reaching the facilities closest to the Worldsoul could finally expose what the Titans constructed beneath Azeroth and what they intended to happen there.

While the official overview confirms that Eclipse will contain major revelations, it does not identify them. Any specific claims about the true nature of the Worldsoul, the Titans’ complete plan or Xal’atath’s eventual fate remain speculation until Blizzard reveals more of the campaign.

The Thraegar Join the Fight Against the Devouring Host

Azeroth’s champions will not enter the Mantle Vault alone. Eclipse introduces the Thraegar, an ancient race of crystalline, dwarflike beings who will become allies in the battle against the Devouring Host.

The Thraegar appear closely connected to the stone and Azerite ecology of the Vault. Their involvement also gives the update a grounded faction through which Blizzard can explain the history of the region, its Titan machinery and the long-term consequences of sealing it away.

Introducing a new allied people during the final chapter of Midnight could have significant narrative implications. The Thraegar may possess information about Azeroth that the surface races have never encountered, especially if they have existed close to the Worldcore for an extended period.

Blizzard has not announced the Thraegar as an Allied Race. At present, they should be treated as a major story faction and local ally rather than a confirmed playable option.

The Deepskar Empire Offers a Third Threat

The battle inside the Mantle Vault will not be limited to the forces of Light and Void. Players will also encounter the Deepskar Empire, a hostile coalition composed of kobolds, troggs, drogbar and niffen.

Blizzard describes the group as a collection of subterranean lowlifes with little interest in welcoming surface adventurers. More surprisingly, the niffen occupy a leadership position within the organisation.

The Deepskar Empire gives Eclipse a third power operating outside the main cosmic conflict. That distinction is useful both narratively and mechanically. A zone built entirely around purple Void creatures and Titan constructs could become repetitive, while the Empire allows Blizzard to introduce local politics, rivalries and less predictable enemies.

It also prevents the update from reducing every underground culture to a servant of Xal’atath. The Deepskar Empire appears to have its own ambitions, even if those ambitions place it in direct conflict with Azeroth’s defenders.

The Worldcore Raid Ends With Xal’atath

The centrepiece of Eclipse will be the Worldcore, a new eight-boss raid built around the final confrontation with Xal’atath.

Players will battle Void enemies, Titan constructs and creatures formed from living Azerite as they descend toward the Worldsoul. Xal’atath herself is confirmed as the raid’s ultimate target, bringing an end to the prolonged pursuit that began during The War Within and continued throughout Midnight.

Blizzard says her motivations will finally be laid bare during the raid. This is an important promise because Xal’atath’s effectiveness as a villain has depended heavily on mystery. She has frequently manipulated other characters without fully explaining whether she serves the Void Lords, seeks freedom from them or intends to claim cosmic power for herself.

Eclipse will need to provide a clear answer without removing everything that makes the character compelling. A direct encounter can resolve her immediate campaign, but it does not automatically mean that Xal’atath will be permanently killed or removed from the Warcraft universe.

Her “defeat” is associated with a major reward, but Blizzard has carefully avoided explaining the final result. Players should not assume that completing the Worldcore will completely eliminate the Harbinger or end the threat of the Void.

Midnight’s Edge Begins a New Legendary Hunt

The Worldcore raid introduces Midnight’s Edge, a Legendary caster dagger and the first Legendary weapon released during both Midnight and the wider Worldsoul Saga.

Despite its appearance and connection to Xal’atath, Blizzard has explicitly confirmed that Midnight’s Edge is not the Blade of the Black Empire. That distinction matters because Xal’atath previously inhabited the infamous Shadow Priest artefact weapon before acquiring her current physical form.

Obtaining the dagger will involve more than defeating the raid once and receiving a conventional boss drop. Completing the Worldcore is only one stage in a longer acquisition process, although Blizzard has not yet explained the complete questline, eligible specialisations or the weapon’s mechanical effects.

For caster players, the announcement creates an obvious long-term progression objective. However, it is too early to make class or raid-roster decisions around the weapon. Its restrictions, upgrade structure and final power level remain unconfirmed.

The Gearhold Adds a Separate Raid Lair

In addition to the Worldcore, Eclipse will include The Gearhold, a smaller raid lair built around Noctinaxx.

Noctinaxx is an enormous Azerite bat lurking within the facility. The encounter will be offered across multiple difficulty levels, including an open-world version and conventional Normal, Heroic and flexible Mythic options.

A standalone lair allows Blizzard to provide an additional encounter without expanding the main Worldcore raid beyond eight bosses. It can also give the update a shorter, more accessible activity for groups that are not ready to progress through the entire primary raid.

The different difficulty structure suggests that Noctinaxx may function as both a broader public threat and an organised group challenge, although the precise reward system has not yet been detailed.

Thraegar’s Stand Joins the Dungeon Rotation

Eclipse will add a new three-boss dungeon named Thraegar’s Stand.

Its encounters include the excavation foremen Cragcleaver and Foreman Sullk, an Azerite elemental called Monokk and a Titan construct known as Stenvarg the Inevitable. The dungeon will also become part of the Midnight Season 3 Mythic+ rotation.

Season 3’s complete announced pool contains eight dungeons:

  • Thraegar’s Stand
  • The Underrot
  • Iron Docks
  • Sanguine Depths
  • The Stonecore
  • Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr
  • Magisters’ Terrace
  • Maisara Cavern

Magisters’ Terrace and Maisara Cavern return from Midnight with adjustments intended to prepare them for the new season. The remaining legacy selections cover several different World of Warcraft expansions, producing a pool with a broad range of environments and encounter styles.

Mythic+ players will also receive revised seasonal objectives. Blizzard plans to add a reward tier for players finishing within the top five percent for their specialisation, alongside updated eligibility rules for the existing top-one-percent and new top-five-percent rewards.

Agony Mode Expands the Prey System

The Prey system will receive its final difficulty level in Eclipse with the introduction of Agony Mode.

Xal’atath’s attempt to reach the Worldsoul has awakened new suffering throughout the Mantle Vault. Players investigating these disturbances with Astalor will encounter new Prey, additional Torments and challenges designed to push the system beyond its existing difficulty settings.

Agony Mode is being presented as the hardest version of Prey content. Blizzard has not yet provided detailed numerical tuning or a complete reward table, but the mode is intended for players who have already mastered the earlier stages and want a more demanding solo or small-group objective.

Radiant Screams Bring the Worldsoul Into the Open World

Radiant Screams will become Eclipse’s major outdoor feature.

These events are manifestations of the Worldsoul’s increasingly powerful cries. As players move closer to the Worldcore, the visions and disturbances associated with Azeroth become more intense, calling champions to respond to threats emerging throughout the Mantle Vault.

The feature provides an important connection between the update’s open-world content and its central narrative. Rather than leaving the Worldsoul confined to campaign cinematics and the final raid, Radiant Screams allow her condition to influence regular activity across the new zone.

Blizzard has not yet revealed the full event structure, progression track or rewards, so comparisons with previous public-event systems remain provisional.

More Races Will Be Able to Become Paladins

Eclipse will expand the Paladin class to three additional races: Forsaken, Night Elves and Trolls.

This is one of the update’s most consequential character-customisation changes. All three combinations challenge the traditional image of what a Warcraft Paladin looks like, especially Forsaken Paladins wielding the Light despite the pain it can cause undead beings.

Night Elf Paladins have been anticipated since the introduction of characters who combined Elune-based faith with Paladin-style abilities. Troll Paladins can similarly build on the setting’s different interpretations of divine, solar and Loa-granted power.

Blizzard has confirmed the class options but has not yet explained whether each combination will receive unique introductory quests, racial mounts or dedicated lore. Those details will determine whether this feels like a purely mechanical expansion or a meaningful addition to each culture.

Housing and Transmog Continue to Expand

Eclipse will also deliver several updates to World of Warcraft’s Housing system.

The new Showcase feature will allow players to browse selected homes and themed housing events through the dashboard. Players can submit a snapshot of their own home without freezing the property in its submitted state, meaning they can continue decorating while the captured version participates in a Showcase.

Visitor Codes will offer another method of sharing completed designs. Mannequins will let players display unlocked armour and weapon appearances, while interface upgrades will add copy-and-paste functionality and multi-select controls for moving or rotating groups of decorations.

Players who already own a particular decoration will also be able to purchase additional copies directly from their home, provided the appropriate currencies and dyes are available.

A subsequent 12.2.5 update is scheduled to remove armour-type restrictions from transmogrification. Once implemented, players will be able to use eligible appearances across armour categories, greatly expanding the number of possible outfit combinations. Blizzard has announced the feature separately from Eclipse’s initial release, so it should not be expected on the first day of Patch 12.2.

Eclipse Leads Directly Into The Last Titan

Eclipse is the final major content update for Midnight, but it is not the end of the Worldsoul Saga.

The confrontation inside the Worldcore will establish the conditions for The Last Titan, the third expansion in the trilogy that began with The War Within. Blizzard has confirmed that the next expansion will return players to Northrend, but its full story and gameplay features have not yet been presented.

More information about The Last Titan is planned after the events of Eclipse. This deliberate sequencing indicates that Blizzard considers Midnight’s ending too important to reveal the next expansion in detail without spoiling it.

For now, the verified picture is clear: Xal’atath has reached the heart of Azeroth, the path to the Worldsoul is open and the heroes who have pursued her across two expansions are preparing for a direct confrontation.

Eclipse must now deliver the payoff to years of narrative preparation while creating a convincing bridge into the final chapter of the saga. The Threshold trailer establishes the danger, but the Worldcore raid—and the revelations waiting inside it—will determine whether Midnight’s conclusion earns its apocalyptic scale.
