World of Warships revives the hunt for the Bismarck with a historical short film and in-game rewards

Few naval operations of World War II have achieved a status as legendary as the pursuit of the Bismarck. The German battleship, considered at the time the pride of the Kriegsmarine, starred in May 1941 in one of the most remembered campaigns of the war after sinking the HMS Hood and immediately becoming the Royal Navy's top priority. Now, World of Warships has decided to reconstruct that episode with a new short film titled “You Must Sink The Bismarck,” focusing on Operation Rheinübung, the mission that ultimately marked the final hours of the German vessel.
Far from being a simple promotional video, Wargaming presents the production as a dramatic recreation crafted within the game’s own visual universe. The narrative follows the pursuit of the Bismarck across the North Atlantic, focusing both on military strategy and the desperate situation of the German crew as they were progressively surrounded by British forces.
The historical context behind the short film explains why this episode continues to generate interest more than eight decades later. During Operation Rheinübung, the Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen left occupied waters with the intention of attacking Allied convoys. After destroying the HMS Hood, one of Britain's naval symbols, the British government ordered an immediate response. The famous instruction attributed to Winston Churchill—“You must sink the Bismarck”—ended up becoming one of the best-known phrases in modern naval warfare.
The chase concluded on May 27, 1941, when accumulated damage and a torpedo that jammed its rudder left the battleship unable to escape. Surrounded by the British fleet, the Bismarck ultimately sank after hours of intense combat. To this day, it remains one of the most studied maritime clashes in military history.
It is no coincidence that World of Warships returns to this episode time and again. For years, the game has used historical events to build time-limited events, missions, and themed campaigns. On this occasion, alongside the short film, players can participate in a quiz inspired by the history of the Bismarck to unlock rewards and enter a giveaway for aPremium Ship VIII container, expanding the educational component with in-game incentives.
The combination of historical outreach and playable content aligns with a trend that Wargaming has frequently leveraged: turning real battles into interactive experiences capable of attracting both naval simulator fans and users interested in military history. Previous events related to the Bismarck, Jutland, or wartime anniversaries have followed a similar philosophy.
There is also an evident emotional component. The new short film does not seem to focus solely on the sinking, but rather on the sense of isolation felt by a crew pursued with no real possibility of retreat. The teaser itself emphasizes this: men trapped aboard a war machine that was gradually turning into an inescapable sentence.
For regular World of Warships players, the release serves as additional content. For others, it can be a gateway to one of the most celebrated episodes of 20th-century naval conflict. Because even today, more than 80 years later, the order still carries its historical weight: the Bismarck had to be sunk.
