Looking forward to 2025 content

The Holiday Season is over in Rust with Santa packing up and clearing out the bodies. Now, let’s take a look at what’s coming in 2025 in the survival game that celebrated at the end of last year its 11th anniversary. On February 6, the Primitive update will be released. It has been announced as one of the most impactful updates to date in changing the dynamics of early-game raiding and combat by introducing siege vehicles, primitive weapons, shields, and a dedicated game mode. The Primitive update represents a time in Rust where the already scarce technology and the usual homemade armaments and ammunition have been depleted, forcing survivors to fashion crude weapons with less sophisticated methods of attack and defense. This means: Less technology, more creativity. Will you be able to survive in this new crude setting? Find more details on the Primitive update here and get ready for the new reality!

Stay Alert

Stay Alert

This month, the Rust team has added the Tin Can Alarm, a new primitive trap made from hanging tin cans. Bush sounds will now be audible to players around you. Just like with footsteps, you now need to pay attention to making noise in bushes. As you'd expect: going slower through a bush makes a quieter sound than running through it. Dropped items that end up in water will now sink more realistically. Plus zipline improvements, NPC vendor price changes and quality of life changes. Discover all the news coming this month to Rust here.

Road Renegades

Road Renegades

The July patch for Rust is now live and the team is thrilled to introduce the latest addition to the game: motorbikes! Blaze across the landscape with speed leaving the clunky old horse-drawn days behind. One of the new motorbikes is a single-person bike and the other has a sidecar as well, where a second player can sit and use weapons! But there is more… Bicycles also are available now! These eco-friendly rides are perfect for those times when you need a silent, reliable way to traverse the terrain without attracting unwanted attention. Discover all the details about the July update “Road Renegades” here or in the trailer below!

Let's celebrate Rust's 10th anniversary!

This month marks Rust's 10th anniversary. To celebrate, there will be in-game birthday cake, hats, souvenirs, and some new items. Rust has undergone significant evolution since its release in 2013. It initially started within Unity Engine 4, playable in a web browser. A standalone version was later released on Steam Early Access, the beginning of which is now known to most as Rust Legacy. With rocky foundations, a complete overhaul of what exists today was done, known as Rust reboot, or simply Rust today. In the last ten years, Rust has sold more than 16 million copies (not counting console). More information here.

Gingerbread Mines

From time to time, you will hear the sound of rattles. Run outside and find a present! Two gifts are spawned per player, within a radius of about 40m from where you are standing. Run and open it to receive your Christmas gifts. They come in three sizes: small, medium, and large. If you have enough small gifts stowed away, you can "trade" them for a medium or large one. Once again, you will be able to find Santa hats and reindeer antlers, both of which are wearable and provide a decent amount of protection. There's also a candy cane to lick and two kinds of stockings. If you hang a sock inside your base when the bells go off, the sock will fill with loot. The bigger sock has a higher chance to drop better items and both last around 5-10 recharges. The Advent Calendar is a craftable dropdown item available to everyone during the Christmas event. Once placed, you can claim a surprise in-game once every real-life day starting December 16. The Christmas event ends on January 5th. More information here.

Prototype 17

Prototype 17

Cobalt's contracted weapons manufacturers were tasked with producing a new weapon to meet the organization's self-defense requirements. After a thorough review of potential candidates, the Prototype 17 was selected. This new weapon has a magazine capacity of 18 rounds and fires in deadly 3-round bursts with a single pull of the trigger. Additionally, it features tritium sights for rapid target acquisition and engagement in low light conditions. It has been noted that some survivors have sought out and reverse-engineered the weapon, removing some of its components and allowing them to augment their own weapons with the 3-round burst firing capability. This is the highlight of the new Rust update, but there is much more, so if you want to know all the details, check out the full patch notes, but before that, enjoy the Prototype 17 presentation video:

Hardcore Mode is Here!

Hardcore Mode is Here!

A major part of Rust is its brutal nature and ruthless PvP. When the softcore game mode was added last year, many players continually gave feedback that they wanted a game mode which takes away the standard Vanilla comforts added throughout the years and gives a more ruthless, hardcore experience, so those requests have been answered! Hardcore mode is now here, a new game mode in Rust aimed towards veteran players. Gone are the comforts such as safe zones, the team system, and maps! If you want to find out more details about hardcore mode, we recommend that you take a look here.

Trainyard Unloading Update

The new update for Rust, Trainyard Unloading, includes a trainyard unloading event, flash bangs and molotov cocktails, performance and lighting improvements, and much more. But possibly the most exciting news is Twitch Rivals 2. On August 9th, 160 Twitch creators will compete in this massive global Rust competition with a prize pool worth $100k. Over the course of the 5 days of competition, teams will build up their bases and supplies. From day 3 onwards, teams will start eliminating each other, until the last survivor is left standing on day 5. During the event, there will of course be drops from selected participating channels. If you want to know all the breaking news and find out what might drop during Twitch Rivals, take a look at the complete patch notes.

The July update is here

The July update is here

Since the release of the Combat Update, the Rust team has monitored player feedback and overall, we’d like to inform you that we’re happy with the state of the gunplay in Rust. The fuse time on the F1 grenade has been decreased from 0.5 to 0.25s because during combat testing, we got the sense that grenades were too easy to evade under most circumstances. The M39 has also had its function changed so it feels more like a superior SAR. Its fire rate has been increased and recoil modified. To find out the rest of the details about this update, take a look here.

Combat Update

Combat Update

An update to the gun game is coming to Rust today. The initial implementation of weapons in Rust was almost 7 years ago and has not changed significantly since its inception. While these changes will be controversial, the development team thinks they are necessary for the health of the game. Read the full patch notes for all the details.

Train update

Train update

The objective of this new May update is for some trains to go on the above-ground rails. There is a lot more content related to trains in development, but for this initial release we are mainly reusing existing assets to provide something to test until that content is ready. The work cart looks a lot like the subway, but now has coupling points on each end that can connect to other train cars. The bogies (also known as trucks) have also been updated to turn with the track more realistically. If you want to know all the news and how the entire rail system works, you just have to read the full patch notes.

Zipline & Rail Update

Zipline & Rail Update

Train network, ziplines, achievements… As well as bug fixes and general improvements. The first iteration of the procedural rail network is now live! Any map size 4250 or larger should have a single railway in the shape of a ring going around the entire island. Keep in mind that this is just a tech test/proof of concept, so there is no official gameplay element yet. The powerlines have had an upgrade, with new platforms and zipwires that now appear in procedurally generated maps. To access the zipline, you have to climb to the top of new platforms that are linked to some powerlines. There are also 18 new achievements to get in the game. As usual, they can only be rewarded on official servers. If you want more information, read the complete patch notes.

The March update is now here!

The March update is now here!

This month several visual improvements have been carried out in some of the oldest monuments so that they are more consistent and related to the quality of the new content. This includes changes such as adding shades of darkness to the interiors, so they don´t become too bright during the day, adding new lights and effects, adjusting the existing lighting and other minor visual changes.  As a result, the interior should now seem darker and more atmospheric. The monuments changed up until now are the Supermarket, Oxum´s Gas Station, Bandit Camp and Launch Sitey. From now on, you can also enjoy the Rust soundtrack. A delight to your ears!

Get ready for the cold!

Take a look here to find out all the details.

Then, why not take a dip yourself? But keep your wits about you! The new NPCs in this update are… sharks! When going swimming or diving, we recommend the latest undersea weapon: the speargun. If you’d rather swap your diving suit for an automobile, get yourself a one or two-seater submarine. You can kit it out with torpedoes and dock at the new, extensive bases and submarine laboratories. As was to be expected, a great deal of bug fixes and improvements have been made. If you want to find out more about the new update, dive on in here.
