World of Warships introduces Fuyutsuki, the rapid-fire destroyer that survived Yamato’s final mission

World of Warships is adding Fuyutsuki, a Tier X Japanese destroyer built around rapid-firing 100 mm guns, sustained pressure and carefully timed bursts of concentrated damage.

Fuyutsuki takes her name from the Japanese words for “Winter Moon” and represents one of the 12 Akizuki-class destroyers completed for the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. The class was developed primarily to protect major warships against aircraft, using highly effective Type 98 dual-purpose guns capable of engaging both surface and aerial targets.

Her World of Warships interpretation preserves that artillery-focused identity.

Fuyutsuki carries eight 100 mm guns distributed across four twin turrets. Their strong rate of fire, high shell velocity and improved penetration make her capable of continuously wearing down enemy destroyers, cruisers and the lighter sections of larger ships.

She can then temporarily increase that pressure through Main Battery Reload Booster, compressing a considerable amount of damage into a short firing window.

Fuyutsuki is not simply another conventional Japanese torpedo destroyer. Her guns are the centre of the ship, while her torpedoes, Exhaust Smoke Generator and supporting consumables provide the tools needed to create opportunities, escape dangerous engagements and punish opponents who move too close.

Behind that gameplay identity is the history of a destroyer that survived the final mission of the battleship Yamato, only to be crippled by a naval mine after Japan had already accepted surrender.

The Akizuki class was designed around anti-aircraft warfare

Japanese destroyers are frequently associated with powerful torpedoes, high-speed attacks and the Type 93 “Long Lance.”

The Akizuki class was created for a different purpose.

As aircraft became an increasingly serious threat to battleships and aircraft carriers, the Imperial Japanese Navy required escorts capable of providing sustained anti-aircraft fire around its most valuable formations.

The resulting Type B destroyer design was considerably larger than many earlier Japanese destroyers.

Instead of placing the greatest possible emphasis on torpedo armament, the ships were constructed around four twin 100 mm Type 98 gun mounts. These weapons could engage surface targets but were also capable of elevating sufficiently to attack aircraft.

The original concept reportedly placed so much importance on fleet protection that torpedo tubes were not considered essential during the earliest design stages.

The final ships nevertheless received a quadruple 610 mm launcher, preserving a limited surface-attack capability without allowing the torpedo installation to dominate the design.

This combination created a distinctive warship.

Akizuki-class destroyers were large, heavily armed with dual-purpose guns and intended to remain close to aircraft carriers and capital ships. Their role was not merely to launch independent torpedo attacks but to protect larger vessels from threats those ships could not easily counter alone.

Fuyutsuki was a simplified development of the original design

Fuyutsuki was constructed at the Maizuru Naval Arsenal and commissioned on May 25, 1944.

She belonged to a later group of Akizuki-class ships incorporating construction changes intended to simplify production during the increasingly difficult final stages of the war.

These ships are sometimes described as the Fuyutsuki subclass, although they remained part of the wider Akizuki family and retained its defining layout.

Fuyutsuki still carried four twin 100 mm turrets, a single quadruple torpedo launcher and a growing number of smaller Type 96 anti-aircraft weapons.

The simplified construction process was a practical response to Japan’s deteriorating industrial position.

By 1944, shipyards faced shortages of materials, skilled workers and time. New warships needed to be completed more efficiently, even as Allied submarines and aircraft made moving resources around the Japanese Empire increasingly dangerous.

Fuyutsuki entered service too late to participate in the major carrier battles that had defined the earlier years of the Pacific War.

Her operational career instead consisted largely of convoy protection, transport support, escort duties and the desperate defensive operations of the conflict’s final year.

A submarine attack nearly removed Fuyutsuki’s bow

Fuyutsuki’s first major damage did not come from an air raid.

On October 12, 1944, she was escorting the light cruiser Ōyodo between Yokosuka and the Inland Sea when the American submarine USS Trepang attacked.

A torpedo struck Fuyutsuki near the bow.

The explosion almost severed the forward section of the destroyer, leaving the recently commissioned ship in need of extensive repairs at Kure.

Surviving such a hit demonstrated the structural resilience associated with the Akizuki design, but it also removed Fuyutsuki from active operations during a critical period.

Only weeks later, the Imperial Japanese Navy committed much of its remaining surface strength to the defence of the Philippines during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Several of Fuyutsuki’s sister ships participated in the operation. Akizuki was lost during the Battle off Cape Engaño, while Wakatsuki was sunk during a subsequent attempt to reinforce Japanese forces at Ormoc Bay.

Fuyutsuki avoided those battles because she was still recovering from the submarine attack.

Her survival was therefore partly the consequence of damage severe enough to prevent her from joining operations that destroyed much of the remaining Japanese fleet.

Fuyutsuki joined Yamato’s final mission

By April 1945, Japan’s strategic position had become effectively impossible.

American forces had landed on Okinawa, placing them close to the Japanese Home Islands. The Imperial Japanese Navy no longer possessed the aircraft, fuel or trained personnel required to contest Allied naval power on equal terms.

Its response was Operation Ten-Go.

The battleship Yamato was ordered to sail toward Okinawa with the light cruiser Yahagi and a small destroyer escort. The force had little meaningful air cover and no realistic prospect of surviving repeated attacks from American carrier aircraft.

Fuyutsuki joined the operation alongside Suzutsuki, Yukikaze, Hatsushimo, Hamakaze, Isokaze, Kasumi and Asashimo.

The force departed on April 6, 1945.

American submarines detected the ships, and carrier aircraft from Task Force 58 began their attack the following day.

Asashimo had already fallen behind because of engine trouble and was destroyed away from the main formation. The remaining ships then faced several waves containing hundreds of fighters, dive bombers and torpedo aircraft.

The escorts attempted to defend Yamato, but their anti-aircraft fire could not prevent the concentrated American assault from overwhelming the formation.

Even the Akizuki class could not protect Yamato

Fuyutsuki had been designed to strengthen the anti-aircraft screen surrounding major Japanese warships.

Operation Ten-Go demonstrated the limits of that concept when confronted by overwhelming carrier air power.

The Akizuki class possessed some of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s best dual-purpose guns. However, the effectiveness of an anti-aircraft system depends on more than the weapon itself.

Fire-control technology, radar coordination, ammunition, crew training and the number of attacking aircraft all influence whether a ship can establish an effective defensive screen.

Japan remained at a serious disadvantage in several of those areas.

American forces could launch coordinated attacks from multiple directions while fighters suppressed exposed anti-aircraft positions. Dive bombers approached from above as torpedo aircraft forced ships to manoeuvre against threats arriving close to the surface.

The destroyers could fire continuously, but they could not create an impenetrable barrier around Yamato.

Fuyutsuki was struck by two rockets that failed to detonate. Near misses and strafing still caused casualties, leaving 12 members of her crew dead and another 12 wounded.

She remained operational.

Yamato was less fortunate.

After sustaining multiple bomb and torpedo hits, the battleship capsized and suffered a catastrophic magazine explosion at approximately 14:23 on April 7.

Surviving Ten-Go did not mean escaping the disaster

Fuyutsuki was one of only four destroyers from the operation to return.

Survival did not turn Ten-Go into a success.

Yamato and Yahagi were lost, alongside the destroyers Asashimo, Hamakaze, Isokaze and Kasumi. Thousands of Japanese sailors were killed during an operation that had almost no possibility of reaching Okinawa.

The remaining destroyers were ordered to recover survivors once the mission had been cancelled.

Fuyutsuki assisted the crippled Kasumi.

After taking aboard the destroyer’s surviving crew, Fuyutsuki fired two torpedoes into Kasumi to prevent the abandoned ship from remaining afloat.

The action reflected the grim responsibilities imposed on surviving escorts.

Fuyutsuki had been sent to protect the force, but by the end of the engagement she was rescuing sailors and destroying another Japanese ship because recovery was impossible.

The title “The Ship That Outlived Yamato” is technically accurate, but it should not be interpreted as a conventional victory.

Fuyutsuki survived because the American attacks concentrated heavily on Yamato and because the damage she received was less severe than that suffered by the other escorts.

She returned from a mission that effectively marked the end of the Imperial Japanese Navy as a functioning surface combat force.

A naval mine ended Fuyutsuki’s active career

Fuyutsuki survived the battle, but her operational career did not continue for long.

Japan announced its acceptance of the Allied surrender terms on August 15, 1945.

Five days later, Fuyutsuki struck a naval mine near Moji on the island of Kyūshū.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the stern.

Japan no longer had the time, material or strategic reason to restore the destroyer. Fuyutsuki surrendered in an unrepaired and disarmed condition.

Her final role was not as an active warship.

In 1948, her hull was incorporated into a breakwater at Wakamatsu alongside the destroyers Suzutsuki and Yanagi.

The ship designed to protect carriers and battleships ended its existence as part of a fixed coastal structure.

That fate was less dramatic than Yamato’s destruction, but it reflected the wider collapse of the fleet Fuyutsuki had been built to defend.

World of Warships places Fuyutsuki at Tier X

In World of Warships, Fuyutsuki appears as a Tier X Japanese destroyer focused primarily on artillery.

Her main battery consists of four twin 100 mm Type 98 mounts.

The arrangement gives her eight barrels, matching the historical Akizuki-class configuration and the in-game Tier VIII Akizuki. However, Fuyutsuki receives additional tools intended to make the familiar gun layout competitive in Tier X battles.

Her basic firing cycle is already fast.

The guns can maintain sustained pressure against targets that remain exposed, repeatedly damaging lighter armour and forcing opponents to choose between retreating, returning fire or attempting to break contact.

The relatively high velocity of the shells makes them more comfortable against moving targets than the slower projectiles carried by some other destroyers.

Players still need to lead distant enemies, but the ballistics reduce the extreme firing arcs and lengthy travel times that can make long-range destroyer fire inconsistent.

Fuyutsuki is therefore designed to generate value through repeated hits rather than one exceptionally powerful salvo.

Main Battery Reload Booster creates the ship’s most dangerous moments

Fuyutsuki’s defining offensive consumable is Main Battery Reload Booster.

When activated, the consumable temporarily reduces the time required to reload the main guns.

This allows Fuyutsuki to compress several additional salvos into a short period.

The effect is valuable because destroyer combat is frequently decided during limited windows.

An enemy destroyer may only remain detected for several seconds before entering smoke or moving outside spotting range. A cruiser may expose its broadside while turning. A battleship may use Damage Control Party immediately before another fire can be started.

Main Battery Reload Booster allows Fuyutsuki to exploit those moments more aggressively.

Against destroyers, the increased volume of fire can remove a large portion of an opponent’s health before it disappears.

Against larger ships, the consumable can accelerate direct damage and create additional opportunities to start fires once Damage Control Party is unavailable.

It should not be activated simply because a target is visible.

The strongest use comes when the enemy cannot easily disengage, when accurate fire is possible and when the additional shells can influence the result of an engagement.

Wasting the booster against a heavily angled or rapidly disappearing target removes one of Fuyutsuki’s most important tactical advantages.

The 100 mm guns can threaten more than destroyers

Small-calibre guns usually struggle against heavily armoured targets.

The Japanese 100 mm artillery branch is unusual because its high-explosive shells receive improved penetration characteristics.

This allows Fuyutsuki to damage armour sections that would normally resist destroyer-calibre HE shells.

The exact result still depends on the target, impact location and commander build.

Battleship armour belts and heavily protected sections remain effectively immune. However, superstructures and lighter external plating can be repeatedly damaged by sustained fire.

The guns also carry armour-piercing ammunition.

AP becomes useful when cruisers, destroyers or lightly protected sections of larger ships present sufficiently broad angles. The individual shells are not large, but the number of rounds Fuyutsuki can fire allows repeated penetrations to accumulate rapidly.

A successful Fuyutsuki player therefore needs to make active ammunition choices.

HE provides the safer option against angled ships and can start fires. AP can produce stronger direct damage when an opponent exposes suitable armour.

Main Battery Reload Booster increases the importance of that decision because firing the wrong ammunition during its limited duration wastes much of the consumable’s potential.

Exhaust Smoke Generator allows Fuyutsuki to fire while moving

Fuyutsuki also carries Exhaust Smoke Generator.

Unlike a conventional Smoke Generator, exhaust smoke can conceal the ship while it continues moving at high speed.

This changes how Fuyutsuki can create firing opportunities.

A traditional smoke screen encourages the destroyer to slow down and remain within a relatively static cloud. That position can then be targeted by torpedoes, Hydroacoustic Search, Surveillance Radar or blind fire.

Exhaust smoke allows Fuyutsuki to maintain movement while temporarily breaking visual contact.

It can be used offensively to fire during a repositioning manoeuvre or defensively to disengage from an unfavourable fight.

The consumable does not make the ship untouchable.

Firing from smoke still creates a detection radius, and nearby enemies may spot Fuyutsuki if they approach closely enough. Radar can reveal her regardless of the smoke screen, while torpedoes can be launched through her expected route.

The limited duration also means the player must know where the ship will be when the effect ends.

A poorly planned attack can leave Fuyutsuki exposed in open water after the final smoke cloud dissipates.

Fuyutsuki cannot rely on speed to escape

One of Fuyutsuki’s clearest weaknesses is her mobility.

Her maximum speed is low by Tier X destroyer standards, reflecting the historical Akizuki class’s emphasis on armament, range and escort duties rather than extreme performance.

This limitation affects almost every part of the battle.

Fuyutsuki cannot rapidly move between distant flanks as effectively as faster gunboats. She may struggle to escape opponents that begin pursuing her, and incorrect positioning can leave her trapped outside the protection of islands or allied ships.

Her speed also makes early capture-point aggression dangerous.

Fast enemy destroyers can reach favourable positions first, while stealthier opponents may detect Fuyutsuki before she sees them. If support ships are prepared to fire, entering the objective too early can result in substantial damage before the guns have enough time to compensate.

Exhaust Smoke Generator helps manage this weakness, but it does not replace careful positioning.

The consumable provides temporary concealment. It does not permanently increase the distance between Fuyutsuki and a faster opponent.

Players need to consider the escape route before opening fire, not after the enemy begins responding.

Her concealment encourages a supporting gunboat role

Fuyutsuki is not designed to dominate every destroyer engagement through concealment.

More specialized torpedo boats can detect her first, allowing them to decide whether to engage, withdraw or direct allied fire toward her position.

This makes information from teammates particularly valuable.

When another ship or aircraft provides spotting, Fuyutsuki can use her guns without being forced to enter the most dangerous part of the battlefield.

Islands can protect her from direct return fire, while smoke and distance allow her to maintain pressure without becoming the easiest available target.

This does not mean Fuyutsuki should remain permanently at maximum range.

Destroyers still need to contest objectives, screen for torpedoes and influence vision around key areas.

The difference is that Fuyutsuki performs those duties most effectively after the enemy’s immediate threats have been identified.

She is better suited to supporting the opening contest than blindly leading it.

Torpedoes remain dangerous despite their limited number

Fuyutsuki carries one quadruple 610 mm torpedo launcher.

Four torpedoes do not provide the same area denial as the larger salvos available to several Japanese destroyers.

The weapons nevertheless cause heavy damage and can punish battleships, cruisers or destroyers that approach without respecting the threat.

Fuyutsuki also receives Torpedo Reload Booster.

This allows the launcher to be prepared again rapidly, creating a second four-torpedo attack with very little delay.

The combination can be particularly effective against an opponent pushing through a narrow route or attempting to force Fuyutsuki out of smoke.

The first salvo can make the enemy turn or use damage-control resources. The second can then target the route created by that reaction.

Torpedoes should still be treated as supporting weapons.

Fuyutsuki’s sustained contribution comes from the main battery. Attempting to play her as a conventional stealth torpedo boat ignores the ship’s strongest systems and places too much importance on a launcher containing only four weapons.

Their best use is often defensive, opportunistic or connected to controlling an enemy’s movement.

Fuyutsuki sits between Akizuki and Harugumo

Fuyutsuki will feel familiar to players who have progressed through the Japanese gunboat destroyer branch.

Like Akizuki, she carries four twin 100 mm turrets and a single quadruple torpedo launcher.

Harugumo increases the main battery to five twin turrets, giving it greater sustained theoretical firepower. However, its larger hull and different consumable package create a more static artillery platform.

Fuyutsuki distinguishes herself through Main Battery Reload Booster and Exhaust Smoke Generator.

She does not maintain Harugumo’s maximum gun volume indefinitely. Instead, she can move under smoke and create temporary periods of accelerated fire.

This produces a more situational damage profile.

Harugumo can continue firing from a prepared position for an extended period. Fuyutsuki is more dependent on selecting the correct moment, activating the booster and leaving before enemy attention becomes overwhelming.

The comparison also highlights why Fuyutsuki cannot be judged entirely through raw damage-per-minute figures.

Consumables, movement and tactical flexibility influence how often the guns can actually remain active.

A theoretical advantage has limited value when the ship cannot safely maintain line of sight.

Historical anti-aircraft power does not guarantee immunity from carriers

Fuyutsuki’s historical reputation is closely connected to anti-aircraft warfare.

That does not mean aircraft carriers can be ignored in World of Warships.

Her 100 mm guns contribute to the long-range anti-aircraft battery, while numerous smaller weapons provide additional defence at close range.

The ship can impose losses on aircraft that remain within its anti-aircraft zones, particularly when operating near allied vessels.

However, isolated destroyers remain vulnerable to repeated spotting and coordinated attacks.

Aircraft do not need to sink Fuyutsuki personally to reduce her influence. Keeping the ship detected can allow enemy surface vessels to fire on her, force her to use smoke prematurely or prevent her from occupying an important position.

Turning off automatic anti-aircraft fire can help preserve concealment until aircraft enter a range where detection becomes unavoidable.

When combat begins, reinforcing the appropriate sector and manoeuvring against the attacking pattern can reduce damage.

The historical lesson remains relevant.

Even a ship designed for anti-aircraft escort cannot defeat an entire air attack alone.

Fuyutsuki rewards preparation rather than improvisation

Fuyutsuki has the tools to cause significant damage, but they need to be combined deliberately.

Her guns reward sustained accuracy.

Main Battery Reload Booster rewards recognizing short offensive windows.

Exhaust Smoke Generator rewards planning a moving firing route.

Torpedo Reload Booster rewards predicting how an enemy will react to the first launch.

None of those systems completely solves the ship’s underlying weaknesses.

Fuyutsuki remains relatively slow, is not exceptionally stealthy and can be punished heavily if caught in open water without a prepared exit.

The result is a destroyer that should become more effective as the player’s understanding of positioning improves.

A careless Fuyutsuki may activate every consumable and still achieve very little.

A disciplined player can wait until an enemy destroyer is detected, accelerate the main battery, move behind an exhaust smoke screen and release two torpedo spreads against any ship attempting to close the distance.

The difference is not simply mechanical accuracy.

It is choosing when the battle should begin.

The Winter Moon returns as an artillery predator

The real Fuyutsuki was designed to protect larger warships from aircraft, survived a submarine torpedo that nearly removed her bow and returned in time to participate in the Imperial Japanese Navy’s final major surface operation.

She could not save Yamato.

No destroyer could have protected the battleship from the scale of the American carrier assault during Operation Ten-Go.

Fuyutsuki nevertheless survived the battle, rescued sailors from Kasumi and remained afloat beyond the end of hostilities, despite suffering catastrophic mine damage only days after Japan accepted surrender.

World of Warships converts that history into a Tier X destroyer defined by the same 100 mm guns that shaped the original Akizuki design.

Her rapid reload, strong shell ballistics, Main Battery Reload Booster and Exhaust Smoke Generator make her a serious threat when allowed to establish a controlled firing position.

Her limited speed and modest concealment prevent her from treating every engagement as favourable.

Fuyutsuki is not a destroyer for charging directly into the nearest objective and hoping superior firepower solves the consequences.

She is a ship for creating an opening, filling it with 100 mm shells and disappearing before the enemy can answer effectively.

The Winter Moon survived Yamato’s final voyage.

In World of Warships, her guns are intended to make sure opponents remember why.
