The beginning of the German invasion against the USSR found 15-year-old Ekaterina Mikhailova near Smolensk, where she lied about her age and enlisted as a nurse in the local rifle unit.

She spent the entire war, from February 1943, as a nurse instructor in the Marine battalion, where she repeatedly participated in dangerous landing operations.

On December 4, 1944, during the Battle of IIok Fortress, being severely wounded and soaked in freezing water, she saved drowning wounded soldiers and fought against the advancing enemies. For this, she received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
